India generates 18.5 lakh metric tonnes e-waste every yearBENGALURU, Apr 21:

India generates about 18.5lakh metric tonnes (MT) of elec-tronic waste every year, withMumbai and Delhi-NCRaccounting for the biggest chunk,a study says.

Also, the figure is likely toreach up to 30 lakh metric tonnesper year by 2018, growing at therate of 25 per cent, it said.

Mumbai, with 1,20,000 MThas topped the list in generating e-waste followed by Delhi-NCRproducing 98,000 MT andBengaluru producing 92,000 MT,the joint-study by Assocham andFrost and Sullivan said.

Besides, Chennai with 67,000MT of e-waste, Kolkata 55,000MT, Ahemdabad 36,000 MT,Hyderabad 32,000 MT and Pune26,000 MT have made to the list,it said.

Just 2.5 per cent of India'stotal e-waste gets recycled due topoor infrastructure, legislationand framework, the study saidthat this has lead to a waste ofdiminishing natural resources,irreparable damage of environ-ment and health of the peopleworking in industry, the studysaid.

Over 95 per cent of e-wastegenerated is managed by theunorganised sector and scrapdealers in this market, dismantlethe disposed products instead ofrecycling it, it added.

In India, about 5 lakhs childlabourers between the age groupof 10-14 are observed to beengaged in various e-waste (elec-tronic waste) activities, withoutadequate protection and safe-guards in various yards and recy-

cling workshops, AssochamSecretary General D S Rawatnoted.

"It is a matter of concern thatmost of our e-waste is handled inthe most unscientific way byscrap dealers, who may be inad-vertently handling radioactivematerial, as was brought to lightin the past in Mayapuri (westDelhi) case," he added.

Further, the study stronglyadvocates legislation to prevent achild's entry into this kind oflabour which includes collection,segregation and distribution.

E-waste comprises computerequipment (about 70 per cent),

followed by telecommunicationequipment (12), electrical equip-ment (8) and medical equipment(7).

Other equipment, includinghousehold e-crap account for theremaining, it said.

The Government, public andprivate industries contribute over70 per cent of e-waste, while 15per cent comes from households,the study said.

Televisions, refrigerators andwashing machines make up themajority of e-waste generated,while computers make up to 20per cent and mobile phones 2 percent. (PTI)

Army undertakes war gamesto deal with nuclear attackJAISALMER, Apr 21:

A strike formation of the Armytoday undertook drills to counterany tactical nuclear attack on itsmechanised unit, as part of the wargames being conducted in desertsof Rajasthan.

The simulation came as about30,000 soldiers took part in a majorexercise ‘Shatrujeet’, led by theelite Mathura-based Strike Corp, indesert area of Mahajan firing rangewhere it is honing its skills to count-er Chemical, Biological,Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN)warfare among others.

The aim of CBRN simulationwas to validate the army’s responsein case its faces a tactical nuclearattack.

“Our policy has been always

that we will never use nuclearweapons first. But if we areattacked, we need to gather our-selves and fight through it. The sim-ulation is about doing exactly that,”an Army source said.

The aim is to practise the capa-bility to strike deep into the enemyterritory in an integrated air-landbattle environment.

The exercise is in the last phaseand next week on April 22, ArmyChief Dalbir Singh Suhag is likelyto visit to review the exercise.

As part of its training and oper-ational preparedness, various drillsinvolved in CBRN warfare werepracticed by the troops includinguse of Individual ProtectiveEquipment (IPE) and fighting in aCBRN contaminated area.(PTI)

Dilip Kumar discharged from hospital

MUMBAI, Apr 21:

Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar, who was hospitalisedfor nearly a week due to respiratory problems, was dischargedtoday.

Kumar was admitted to the Lilavati hospital in suburbanBandra on April 15 because high fever, chest infection and respira-tory issues.

“He is fine. He is stable and normal now and so we have dis-charged him today,” Dr Jalil Parkar said.

Wearing a light pink color kurta-pyjama, Kumar came out onon a wheel chair accompanied by wife Saira Banu around noon.

Earlier, doctors had said that Kumar would be discharged lastevening but the family decided against it and postponed it fortoday. Superstar Aamir Khan had come to meet the 93-year-oldlegend last evening.

Kumar, whose real name is Mohammad Yusuf Khan, has fea-tured in several hit films during his six-decade long career such as“Madhumati”, “Devdas”, “Mughal-e-Azam”, “Ganga Jamuna”,“Ram Aur Shyam”, “Karma” and others. He was last seen onscreenin the film “Qila” in 1998.

He was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1994and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. (PTI)

ED seeks Mallya’s deportation; writes to MEA

NEW DELHI, Apr 21:

Armed with a non-bailable arrest warrant against him, ED hasapproached the External Affairs Ministry seeking initiation ofdeportation proceedings against liquor baron Vijay Mallya in con-nection with its money laundering probe against him in the Rs 900crore IDBI alleged loan fraud case.

The agency has written to MEA and will also soon write to theCBI to get an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued against theRajya Sabha MP to get him arrested, based on the NBW directedby a Mumbai court.

Only last week, the MEA had suspended Mallya’s diplomaticpassport and has sought a reply from him as to why his passportshould not be revoked as the ED said the businessman was notcooperating in the probe in the said case under the stringentPrevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Sources said once the deportation proceedings are initiated, theMEA will seek assistance of their counterparts in the UnitedKingdom to interdict Mallya and fly him back to India.

“The grounds for deportation are primarily two. A non-bailablewarrant issued by the Mumbai court and suspension of the passportof the businessman,” they said.

Mallya is understood to be in the UK after he left India onMarch 2.(PTI)
