DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 2016 (PAGE 17) India generates 18.5 lakh metric tonnes e-waste every year BENGALURU, Apr 21: India generates about 18.5 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of elec- tronic waste every year, with Mumbai and Delhi-NCR accounting for the biggest chunk, a study says. Also, the figure is likely to reach up to 30 lakh metric tonnes per year by 2018, growing at the rate of 25 per cent, it said. Mumbai, with 1,20,000 MT has topped the list in generating e- waste followed by Delhi-NCR producing 98,000 MT and Bengaluru producing 92,000 MT, the joint-study by Assocham and Frost and Sullivan said. Besides, Chennai with 67,000 MT of e-waste, Kolkata 55,000 MT, Ahemdabad 36,000 MT, Hyderabad 32,000 MT and Pune 26,000 MT have made to the list, it said. Just 2.5 per cent of India's total e-waste gets recycled due to poor infrastructure, legislation and framework, the study said that this has lead to a waste of diminishing natural resources, irreparable damage of environ- ment and health of the people working in industry, the study said. Over 95 per cent of e-waste generated is managed by the unorganised sector and scrap dealers in this market, dismantle the disposed products instead of recycling it, it added. In India, about 5 lakhs child labourers between the age group of 10-14 are observed to be engaged in various e-waste (elec- tronic waste) activities, without adequate protection and safe- guards in various yards and recy- cling workshops, Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat noted. "It is a matter of concern that most of our e-waste is handled in the most unscientific way by scrap dealers, who may be inad- vertently handling radioactive material, as was brought to light in the past in Mayapuri (west Delhi) case," he added. Further, the study strongly advocates legislation to prevent a child's entry into this kind of labour which includes collection, segregation and distribution. E-waste comprises computer equipment (about 70 per cent), followed by telecommunication equipment (12), electrical equip- ment (8) and medical equipment (7). Other equipment, including household e-crap account for the remaining, it said. The Government, public and private industries contribute over 70 per cent of e-waste, while 15 per cent comes from households, the study said. Televisions, refrigerators and washing machines make up the majority of e-waste generated, while computers make up to 20 per cent and mobile phones 2 per cent. (PTI) Army undertakes war games to deal with nuclear attack JAISALMER, Apr 21: A strike formation of the Army today undertook drills to counter any tactical nuclear attack on its mechanised unit, as part of the war games being conducted in deserts of Rajasthan. The simulation came as about 30,000 soldiers took part in a major exercise ‘Shatrujeet’, led by the elite Mathura-based Strike Corp, in desert area of Mahajan firing range where it is honing its skills to count- er Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) warfare among others. The aim of CBRN simulation was to validate the army’s response in case its faces a tactical nuclear attack. “Our policy has been always that we will never use nuclear weapons first. But if we are attacked, we need to gather our- selves and fight through it. The sim- ulation is about doing exactly that,” an Army source said. The aim is to practise the capa- bility to strike deep into the enemy territory in an integrated air-land battle environment. The exercise is in the last phase and next week on April 22, Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag is likely to visit to review the exercise. As part of its training and oper- ational preparedness, various drills involved in CBRN warfare were practiced by the troops including use of Individual Protective Equipment (IPE) and fighting in a CBRN contaminated area.(PTI) DIP/J-388 Dated : 21-4-2016 DIP/J-380 Dated : 21-4-2016 Sd/- Chief Engineer, DIP/J-409 EM&RE Wing, Dt : 21-4-2016 Jammu DIP/J-402 Dt: 21-4-2016 Government of Jammu & Kashmir J&K Service Selection Board, Jammu. The agency has written to MEA and will also soon write to the CBI to get an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued against the Rajya Sabha MP to get him arrested, based on the NBW directed by a Mumbai court. Only last week, the MEA had suspended Mallya’s diplomatic passport and has sought a reply from him as to why his passport should not be revoked as the ED said the businessman was not cooperating in the probe in the said case under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Sources said once the deportation proceedings are initiated, the MEA will seek assistance of their counterparts in the United Kingdom to interdict Mallya and fly him back to India. “The grounds for deportation are primarily two. A non-bailable warrant issued by the Mumbai court and suspension of the passport of the businessman,” they said. Mallya is understood to be in the UK after he left India on March 2.(PTI)
