Shingle ShakeupAt the beginning of January,GAF announced that they wereupgrading their laminate shinglewarranties to limited lifetimeacross the board. Over thefollowingweeks,theothershinglemanufacturers have respondedtothecompetitivesituation.

Know the FactsThe purpose of this specialnewsletter is to help youcut through the clutter andobjectively compare the newwarranties. Generally speaking,all of the manufacturers haveupgradedtheirlaminatedshinglewarrantiestolimitedlifetime,andenhancedthewindwarrantiesaswell.Buteducateyourselfonthesubtle differences between thenewwarranties,andyoumayfindnew competitive advantages toemployinyoursalesprocess.

What about existing inventory?GAF, IKO, TAMKO, OwensCorning, and CertainTeed haveall announced that their newwarranties apply to existingproduct, which may be markedas30-year,40-year,or50-yearproduct. Each manufactureris transitioning their packagingand literature to match theirrespective new lifetime limitedwarranty programs, but it willbe well into the middle of theyear before the transitions arecomplete. In the meantime,each manufacturer is furnishingWarranty Upgrade Certificatesto provide to homeowners thatassure limited lifetime warrantycoverage. These certificatesare for peace of mind, and arenot required; as long as theshingleswere installedafterthemanufacturer’s start date forthe new warranties (see chartinside),theshinglesarecovered.

What about Premium Shingles?These changes have eliminatedpremium shingles’ previouswarranty advantage over 30yearlaminates.Yoursellprocessfortheseproductswill likelynowfocus more on weight/durabilityandaesthetics.

What about 3-Tab Shingles?No shingle manufacturershave changed their warrantieson 3-tab shingles, giving theformerly 30-year laminatesa considerable warrantyadvantage that can help youupsell customers on laminatedshingles.
