Shingle Shakeup At the beginning of January, GAF announced that they were upgrading their laminate shingle warranties to limited lifetime across the board. Over the following weeks, the other shingle manufacturers have responded to the competitive situation. Know the Facts The purpose of this special newsletter is to help you cut through the clutter and objectively compare the new warranties. Generally speaking, all of the manufacturers have upgraded their laminated shingle warranties to limited lifetime, and enhanced the wind warranties as well. But educate yourself on the subtle differences between the new warranties, and you may find new competitive advantages to employ in your sales process. What about existing inventory? GAF, IKO, TAMKO, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed have all announced that their new warranties apply to existing product, which may be marked as 30-year, 40-year, or 50-year product. Each manufacturer is transitioning their packaging and literature to match their respective new lifetime limited warranty programs, but it will be well into the middle of the year before the transitions are complete. In the meantime, each manufacturer is furnishing Warranty Upgrade Certificates to provide to homeowners that assure limited lifetime warranty coverage. These certificates are for peace of mind, and are not required; as long as the shingles were installed after the manufacturer’s start date for the new warranties (see chart inside), the shingles are covered. What about Premium Shingles? These changes have eliminated premium shingles’ previous warranty advantage over 30 year laminates. Your sell process for these products will likely now focus more on weight/durability and aesthetics. What about 3-Tab Shingles? No shingle manufacturers have changed their warranties on 3-tab shingles, giving the formerly 30-year laminates a considerable warranty advantage that can help you upsell customers on laminated shingles.
