When the crackling started during Jason Aldean’s Oct. 1 performance of “When She Says Baby,” most of the 20,000-30,000 people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas thought it was a sound problem.
But within moments, as the popping noises intensified, it became evident something more sinister was occurring. A celebratory concert was under siege, and everyone was a potential target.
“It wasn’t an accident,” SiriusXM personality Storme Warren said hours later while still in a state of disbelief. “This was a deliberate act, and we were all sitting ducks.”
News reports called it the deadliest attack in modern American history. A wealt hy 64-year- old, Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the audience, with some reports indicating he may have had more than an hour to attack concertgoers with rapid-fire automatic guns from a 32nd-floor room in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, several hundred yards away from the outdoor venue. Some 59 people were reported dead with 527 injured, though it was possible both numbers could escalate.
The attack is the latest in a series of horrific concert tragedies that have affected the country music business this decade. A stage collapse at a 2011 Sugarland concert in Indianapo-
lis left seven dead and more than 40 injured. Two June 2016 incidents in Orlando, Fla. — the killing of former The Voice contestant Christina Grimmie by an obsessive fan and the attack on the Pulse nightclub by a lone gunman that left 49 dead — coincided with the CMA Music Festival, heightening
the sense of vulnerability that artists a nd t hei r entou rages feel when performing in public. And just last month, Montgomery Gentry ’s Troy Gentry died in a helicopter crash near the Flying W Airport & Resort in Medford, N.J.
Wa r ren, who wa s t he MC for Gentry’s public memorial, was in the middle of the chaos in Las Vegas. He was standing at the side of the stage with Jake Owen’s road manager, Greg Fowler, taking in the Aldean show, only to go diving for safety behind a mass of concrete under the
stage when they realized they were under fire. As the initial reports began pouring out in a media frenzy, Warren discovered he had been in the vicinity of the killer — who had checked into the hotel on Sept. 28 — for several days.
The shooting “happened four floors above my room,” says Warren. “So whoever he was, I probably went up the elevator with him a few times.”
The “whoever” points to the difficulty of patrolling concerts

in an era when firearms are plentiful. In the initial hours after the incident, law enforcement indicated Paddock had no prior record and was not on their radar, though searches of his property and his hotel accommodations turned up several thousand rounds of ammo.
Facilities have stepped up security in recent years, with metal detectors a familiar sight at many venues. But outdoor festivals in densely trafficked locations create more issues. The CMA Music Festival in Nashville, the Downtown Hoedown in Detroit and Route 91 are among those tucked into urban centers. While there is always a risk of a tragic incident, Las Vegas law enforcement officials admitted they never anticipated Paddock’s strategy — treating a high-rise hotel as a deer stand — as a potential scenario.
It was, President Donald Trump said in a press conference, “an act of pure evil.” He ordered flags be flown at half-staff, and the White House observed a moment of silence in the afternoon. Other vigils sprouted up — several in Las Vegas, and another announced by the Country Music Association at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. The CMA delayed the final round of awards balloting, originally set for Oct. 2, for a day as the industry grappled with the tragedy.
In addition to Aldean, a number of artists were present when the shots rang out, including Owen, Chris Young and Luke Combs, who said in an interview on NBC’s Today that he was adamant the offensive would not stop him from pursuing his dream.
“It’s obviously disturbing to know that he was up there waiting for his opportunity,” said Combs of the killer. “At the same time, I don’t want to be scared or put any shows of mine on hold. I feel like that’s what this person wants to happen.”
Aldean’s record label, BBR Music Group, indirectly echoed that sentiment, noting in an official statement the tacit agreement made between an artist and the public. The performer puts his body in front of thousands of strangers, expecting they’re there to enjoy themselves. The public anticipates a communal experience. Few genres have a thinner wall between artist and fan than country.
“The country music community is a family, and our listeners are a part of that family,” said BBR executive vp Jon Loba in the statement. “They put food on our tables and allow our artists and staff to live our dreams by going to events like last night. While our artists and staff are safe, our hearts are broken for those listeners in our extended family who just wanted to share a night of great music and the camaraderie that is the hallmark of country music.”
Warren saw that camaraderie in action when the shooting subsided. Before the first responders arrived en masse, concertgoers still on the grounds were doing what they could for the hundreds of fellow fans that were wounded or injured.
“There was humanity that really stuck up for one another and really helped,” he said. “There were veterans running around going, ‘I’m trained. I can help. Is anybody hurt?’ ”
He adds, “You always just trust people to be good. Why would you step onstage believing someone that was out there was being bad? You would never do your job. Why would you even think that?”
It’s another form of the question everyone is asking: Why?

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE OCTOBER 2, 2017 | PAGE 2 OF 20
Kenny Chesney’s “All the Pretty Girls” (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) rises 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Oct. 14), increasing 7 percent to 47 million audience impressions in the week ending Oct. 1, according to Nielsen Music. On Hot Country Songs, the single remains bulleted at its No. 7 peak.
Chesney banks his 28th Country Airplay No. 1, a roll that began more than 20 years ago on the chart dated Aug. 30, 1997, when “She’s Got It All,” his ninth entry, became his first No. 1, for three weeks.
“Few songs have as much summer in them as ‘All the Pretty Girls,’ which is why I wanted to record it,” Chesney tells Billboard of the song (which debuted on the June 17 chart, four days before summer started). “To me, there’s a special excitement that is summer and being young and alive. I think the guys caught that in the studio, and in a year that we weren’t on the road, I think I still got to be a part of No Shoes Nation’s summer through this song.”
“Pretty Girls” was written by Nicolle Gaylon, Tommy Lee James and Josh Osborne, and is the fourth single from Chesney’s album Cosmic Hallelujah. It follows “Bar at the End of the World,” which peaked at No. 10 on the Country Airplay list dated May 13; “Setting the World on Fire,” featuring P!nk (No. 1, Nov. 5, 2016); and “Noise” (No. 6, July 16, 2016).
In collecting his 28th Country Airplay No. 1, Chesney is right behind Tim McGraw’s record 29, dating to the chart’s Jan. 20, 1990, inception. Alan Jackson and George Strait share third place with 26 No. 1s apiece.
ALBUM ARRIVALS Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) leads Top Country Albums for a third week (27,000 equivalent album units, down 31 percent). Meanwhile, three debuts populate the top 10.
Arriving at No. 2 is Texas trio Midland’s first full-length, On the Rocks (Big Machine/BMLG) (20,000). The set opens atop Country Album Sales with 17,000 sold.
Rocks follows Midland’s self-titled EP, which peaked at No. 38 on Top Country Albums (Aug. 5). The group’s launch song, “Drinkin’ Problem,” hit No. 3 on Country Airplay. Follow-up “Make a Little” jumps 54-41, soaring 151 percent to 3.1 million impressions.
A cappella country outfit Home Free bounds onto Top Country Albums at No. 3 with Timeless (Columbia), earning 16,000 units (almost all in pure sales) and marking the act’s strongest sales week.
Home Free broke through when it won the 2013 season of NBC’s The Sing-Off. Timeless marks its fifth appearance on Top Country Albums and fourth top 10.
Its 2016 holiday set Full of (Even More) Cheer is its highest-peaking (No. 2).
Singer-songwriter Chris Janson’s second full-length, Everybody (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville), bows at No. 7 on Top Country Albums (11,000 units; 8,000 in pure sales). The set follows his first LP, Buy Me a Boat, which started and peaked at No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart dated Nov. 21, 2015 (19,000 sold).
Everybody has produced two singles thus far: “Holdin’ Her” peaked at Nos. 20 and 25 on Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs, respectively. “Fix a Drink” holds at its No. 10 high on Country Airplay, increasing 14 percent to 27.9 million, while leaping to a new Hot Country Songs peak (17-11).
‘ROAD’ GOES ON Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville) continues its Hot Country Songs domination, stretching its record No. 1 run to 34 weeks.
The track adds another record, becoming the longest-leading Country Streaming Songs No. 1: 34 weeks. Although down 5 percent to 12.3 million U.S. streams, “Body” passes Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” which led for 33 weeks in 2013 and 2014. “Body” now wears the crown for the longest reign on three of Billboard’s main country songs charts: Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales (31 weeks). It led Country Airplay for three weeks beginning May 6.

URBAN, KELSEA HAILED BY BMI, ASCAPKelsea Ballerini, Keith Urban and songwriter Bob DiPiero (“Southern Voice,” “Blue Clear Sky”) will receive significant achievement honors from ASCAP and BMI when the performing rights organizations hand out their country song-writer awards in the days preceding the 51st annual Country Music Awards.
Ballerini will pick up the ASCAP Vanguard Award on Nov. 6 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Previously bestowed on such acts as Chris Stapleton, Walk the Moon and The Civil Wars, the trophy recognizes ASCAP members poised to influence music’s future.
DiPiero will be named a BMI Icon during a Nov. 7 ceremony at BMI’s Music Row office. With a hit list that dates back to the early 1980s – when the Oak Ridge Boys gave him his first No. 1 single with 1983’s “American Made” – DiPiero has emerged as one of the genre’s most colorful songwriters, using his early experiences in Ohio bar bands as a litmus test for hooks. DiPiero wrote such titles as “The Church On Cumberland Road,” “Wink” and “You Can’t Take The Honky Tonk Out Of The Girl,” and joins such previous BMI Icons as Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
Urban is in line for the BMI Champion Award, honoring his efforts at en-gaging future generations of music makers. He’s been active in numerous music-education campaigns, raised more than $2.6 million for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and even gifted a young guitarist he’d never met with an expensive pedal at an instrument store.
Singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell (“Please Remember Me,” “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight”) will also receive the ASCAP Founders Award, as previously announced.
The CMAs air Nov. 8 on CBS from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

In the nearly six years since Elektra released Jana Kramer’s first hit, “Why You Wanna,” Kramer has experienced a roller-coaster ride in her love life. There was an engagement, and subsequent breakup, with Brantley Gilbert. That was followed by a marriage to former NFL player Michael Caussin, producing a child and a complicated split, though the two are working to rebuild their relationship.
Psychology Today has confirmed that there is such a thing as addiction to love, and — like any other form of dependency — it leads people to engage in behaviors with obvious negative consequences. Kramer is the first to say she has experienced it.
“I’ve had my heart broken in ways I never thought was possible and woke up making some really bad decisions, and I was sober when I did it,” she says. “Like, I married some dude when I was 19 — knew him for a week and went through a drive-thru in [Las] Vegas. You would’ve thought I would’ve been drunk as hell going through it, but no — I just wanted to be wrapped up in the idea of love.”
Not surprisingly, Kramer delivers a convincing vocal when she addresses the intensity of romantic addiction in her f irst independent single, “I’ve Done Love.” Receiving airplay on SiriusXM since its Aug. 17 release on Kramer’s own label, Sophie Dog, the song lists a handful of well-known vices — including alcohol, cocaine and ecstasy — and equates their power to that of love. The difference, of course, is that no one needs those other substances to survive, but love is essential to a healthy existence.
“Every time I break down a song, or when I’m working on a role, I always ask myself, ‘What is that character or the artist or that person looking for?’ ” says Kramer, a former One Tree Hill star. “It always comes down to love.”
“I’ve Done Love” came her way following Kramer’s departure from Warner Music Nashville in February. She went to lunch with songwriter Nicolle Galyon (“All the Pretty Girls,” “Smooth”) to discuss some other material, and their cursory acquaintance turned into a friendship as they got to know each other.
A week or two later, Galyon had a co-writing session with Shane McAnally (“Body Like a Back Road,” “Unforgettable”) and Josh Osborne (“Drinkin’ Problem,” “Take Your Time”), and when Kramer’s name came up, McAnally suggested sending her “I’ve Done Love,” a song the three had written in 2016.
“It’s a little darker thing, and we knew it was going to be a tough sell,” says Osborne. “But we knew if the right artist got it, it’s a song that’s saying something in a different way that we’ve all experienced.”
“I’ve Done Love” was penned at Smack Songs after the trio originally attempted to write with the title “Love and Stuff.” It didn’t sing well, and as they tried to work through it, Osborne brought up the title to the 2010 Jake Gyllenhaal movie Love & Other Drugs. They couldn’t make it work, either, though it morphed into “I’ve Done Love.”
“I’ve never done a drug in my life, but I have done love, as cheesy as that sounds,” says Galyon. “The song spoke to me as someone who has never done drugs.”
Once they locked into the new title and a lyrical direction — with the singer recounting the chemicals she has not experienced — the music began to take shape, with Osborne creating a hypnotic acoustic guitar pattern on a minor chord.
“It needed a dark, sinister tone to it,” he says, “because the phrase ‘I’ve Done Love,’ it has a certain weight to it that we had to try to match with the music.”
The chorus shifted slightly, focusing on a major chord while reaching a higher frequency with a relentless, almost anthemic cadence. Wrapping two
verses and a chorus was comparatively easy, but they needed another section to bring it home. McAnally suggested a bridge that might have a hooky, chanty quality, and they found a solution that started “Love, love what I need.” In essence, it underscored that the song was about love and not about the drugs they had listed.
McAnally and Osborne produced a demo on a day Galyon was unavailable, a nd she added her voice later, t hou g h t he major-chord chorus was too cheery. They took it to engineer Scott Williamson, who transformed it with a remix.
“He had a great way to make the whole song lift but still have a darkness and a kind of edge to it,” says Osborne. “Once we were able to capture that on the demo, then the song kind of made sense.”
When Kramer heard that demo in the spring, she was adamant that it become her f irst indie release. Galyon co-produced it with Brad Winters (Haley Georgia, Jon Langston), cutting the basic instruments at The Tracking Room in Nashville on June 5. They kept most of the demo’s basic sound, but scaled back just a hair on its attitude.
“The original demo had some grittier guitars and was a little more bombastic,” says Winters. “We kept this record a little bit more reserved and played more to what Jana does well.”
Guitarist Kris Donegan enhanced Osborne’s original intro part by creating a second rhythmic line for the core acoustic foundation. And the end product finds a number of instruments and synth effects sneaking in and out.
“Hindsight’s always 20/20, but once we were digging into the track, we realized we had lots of cool, little moments,” says Winters. “The song itself is really about how love is just like drugs, and all this stuff in your life winds up being a little bit chaotic. So what wound up happening, almost by accident, was this thematic element of instruments coming in and going out just like stuff creeps into your life, wreaks havoc for a second and then goes back into the shadows.”
Kramer recorded her vocals with Galyon and Winters at his basement studio in the RareSpark building on Music Row. She was able to access the song’s emotion immediately, and needed no more than 90 minutes to wrap it up.
“That song is my life,” she says. “Whether I’m acting or singing, you just tell the truth and it’s going to come out authentic.”
Emily Weisband overdubbed background vocals, and Winters and his wife, Lindsey Winters, added more harmonies at the last minute to thicken the effect, but they kept those voices in the background, allowing Kramer to dominate.
“Jana has a really unique tone that sounds like there’s a teardrop in her voice,” says Galyon. “She has that cry and that little break that makes her Jana. It was cool to hear that on this song.”
In its first month of release, “I’ve Done Love” racked up roughly 600,000 streams on YouTube alone, and when Kramer debuted the song live at Boston’s Wilbur Theater on Sept. 14, she was stunned that the audience knew the chorus verbatim.
“I felt stupid, but I started crying,” she says. “It’s just so cool to have the hard work pay off and hear people sing it back and know that they can relate to it.”
Kramer is in talks with a couple of labels, though she clearly wasn’t going to wait around for someone else to release new music. She’s not desperate to sign another deal, just as she’s no longer desperate to be in love.
“It’s like this thing you’re chasing,” she says of her former addiction. “Once you find it in yourself is when you stop chasing it.”

Country IndicatorBILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE OCTOBER 2, 2017 | PAGE 16 OF 20
CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 149 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2017, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.
BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored
station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.
TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.
RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still
gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.
HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.
MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.
MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.
AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.
BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
