Background
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities currently has 32 colleges and universities in its system. Each college has its own IT data center.
MNSCU faced a proposed reduction in state funding. This project focused on designing and implementing a standardized Green IT data center.
Project GoalsConsolidate current information technology services into
a more energy efficient system
Reduce cost of energy and receive a good return on
investment in new equipment
Allow MNSCU to be a proactive leader in the state by
reducing energy consumption
Project GoalsIncorporate alternative energy to help reduce
energy costs
Implement server virtualization to use current server resources more efficiently
Reduce energy consumption by 5% in the first phase and 10% by project completion
Timeline3/2011
• Project approval
• Monitoring and measuring in place
9/2011
• Awareness program written and implemented
1/2012
• Active directory use has been reviewed and implemented
Timeline
9/20126/2012
•Implement Solar
•MNSCU IT employees have obtained Green IT Certification
1/2013
•End Phase 1
•Energy consumption should be reduced
by 5%
1/2015
•Major datacenter changes made to increase virtualization
3/2016
•Project complete (total reduction of 10%)
Monitoring and Measuring“You cannot improve what you cannot measure”
Use of Measuring software• Entuity-Eye of the Storm• 75% compliance of users in turning off
devices• $1.5 million savings after two years
Use of Active Directory• Additional $500,000 savings
Green IT Certification
Selected MNSCU IT employees certified in Green IT during Phase I of project
CompTIA Strata Certificate
These employees maintain contact with our project group to discuss their observations at the ground level help craft strategies for promoting Green IT
Virtualizing ServersMicrosoft Server 2008 x64 R2 OS
Virtualization provided by Intel VT + Microsoft Hyper-V
Replace current Pentium-4 era Xeon servers with fewer, more modern 4-core Intel servers (Socket 1366)
Each server to have redundant features (Redundant PS, RAID)
Virtualizing ServersReduce datacenters from 12 servers to 3
Storage can be updated based on needs of the datacenter
Overall hardware savings of $768,000 (project end)
Overall energy savings of $384,000 (project end)

APC Eco-Breeze Cooling SystemA modular indirect evaporative and air-to-air heat exchanger cooling solution.

EcoBreeze has the ability to switch automatically between air-to-air and indirect evaporative heat exchange
The design of the EcoBreeze is able to reduce energy consumption by leveraging temperature differences between outside ambient air, compared to IT return air, to provide economized cooling to the data center

Solar Alternative Clean Energy Source
By Phillips Eco Enterprise Center
Solar MountingsOn Roof Tops
Building codes allowing, solar panels will be mounted on rooftops
Parking LotsAnother alternative is using parking lots which the solar panels can double up as shades for cars
Expected Savings from Solar Energy
- System Cost: $1,000,000- Percent of Energy offset: 96%- Rebates Generated: $450,000annually for the first 5 years- Electricity cost saved in first year:$200,000- Total Savings to the General
Fund over 5 Years: $4,000,000
Summary
Overall energy savings approximately $9,000,000 at project completion
30 % energy reduction at project completion, exceeding our goal of 10%
Standardized data centers increase flexibility of staffing, and ease system management
