Definition of Compound Noun

  A compound word is formed by putting two words together to make a new word. The new word also has a new meaning.

Classification of Compound Nouns

  Closed - the two words are together with no space

Example: basketball

  Open – there is a space between the two words

Example: police officer

  Hyphenated ( - ) – there is a hyphen/dash between the two words

  A closed compound noun is formed when the there is no space between the two words.
