What are Nouns?

Simple Definitions:

A person, place or thing.

Here are some examples:

•person: man, woman, teacher, John, Mary

•place: home, office, town, school (CHIJ Bukit

Timah), Singapore

•thing: table, car, banana, money, music,

love,dog, monkey

Nouns

In simple terms, nouns are "things" (and verbs areactions"). 

• Like food. Food (noun) is something you eat (verb). • Or happiness. Happiness (noun) is something you

want (verb).

• Or human being. A human being (noun) issomething you are (verb).

What are Compound Nouns?

• A compound noun is made up of morethan one word and yet describes only

one object (one noun).• A compound noun is made up of a

combination of two nouns eg.

an address book, a bookworm,wormhole/ worm cast

What are Compound Nouns?

Compound Noun Chain : 

• A compound noun chain starts with one noun (i.e.room).  You add another noun (i.e. service) to make acompound noun (room service). Then you take the secondnoun (service), and add another noun (i.e. station) to makethe next compound noun (service station). Continue in aclockwise direction until you get back to the beginning (i.e.study room).

What are Compound Nouns?

• Formation:

• Words can be combined to form compound nouns. These are very common, and new combinations areinvented almost daily. They normally have two parts.

• The first part tells us what kind of object or personit is, or what its purpose is (police, boy, water, dining, bed ):

• The second part identifies the object or person inquestion (man, friend, tank, table, room ).

What are Compound Adjectives?

• A compound adjective is formed from twodifferent words, and occasionally three. They areusually written with a hyphen (e.g. good-looking,

well-known).• Special Words: merry-go-round, Jack-in-the-box

• Most of the population are right-handed, butabout 10% are left-handed.
