“The Commonwealth Orchard is a
simple idea - give people a spade, the
skills and the confidence and we canmake a more fruitful Scotland.
Fruit growing is great fun and easy and
the trees will keep fruiting for years to
come. We hope the children planting
today will be able to bring their
children and grandchildren back in 50
years time to enjoy the fruit from their
tree.”
John Hancox, Director of the
Commonwealth Orchard.

It’s all about people! The Commonwealth Orchard is inspired by the 2014 Games coming to
Scotland and builds on the successful track record of the Children’s Orchard. It’s a great way to
create a legacy for the future. The Commonwealth Orchard is being planted across Scotland and
beyond, consisting of lots of small plantings, making a greater whole. Our vision is that children and
families can all grow fruit near to where they live. Businesses, landowners, charities, local authorities,
schools and communities can all help create a fruitful Scotland.

Working with businesses, such as Clydesdale Bank and
PriceWaterhouseCoopers, we deliver practical employee
volunteering opportunities, in partnership with groups such
as Scottish Business in the Community. Getting people out of
the office and planting fruit trees is good fun, creates
employee job satisfaction and helps companies meet their
corporate social responsibility targets.

B O A R D B E N E F I T S The Commonwealth Orchard delivers considerable
community benefit at low cost. This visionary initiative has
worked with hospitals, and health boards, nurseries, primary
and secondary schools, and special needs schools, with social
work projects, parks and allotments, community action, food
and health initiatives, biodiversity and greenspace teams.
L A N D O W N E R B E N E F I T S Landowners - be they housing associations, property
developers, private estates, businesses with land holdings,
local authorities and utilities - often have underused land
assets. Sometimes they also have unused walled gardens and
even orchards. Allowing orchards to be planted for
community use adds attractive landscape features, with all
the environmental benefits of planting trees.

The Commonwealth Orchard We plant fruit
trees, encourage growing and eating of local food,
and provide an interesting way to develop strongercommunities. We link with businesses, landowners,
developers, local authorities and the community to
deliver local fruit for people. We also depend on
individual volunteers and supporters to help things
to happen.

The word “Commonwealth” is an interesting one.
While it’s now thought of as part of the
Commonwealth and Empire, it has much older roots
to do with ideas of Common Good and
Commonweal - looking after the welfare of thewhole community. It’s a very democratic concept,
and is about self-reliant and resilient communities
working to improve the lives of their own people.

C O M M U N I T Y G R O U P SThe Commonwealth Orchard is a flexible way of linking up
many existing groups. We work with a range of health,
homeless, environmental and children’s charities and NGO’s.
Planting fruit trees and picking and using the fruit is a great
way to bring people together and build self esteem and
respect - and of course it tastes good!
C O M M U N I T Y B E N E F I T S Our experience is that community food growing helps the
community grow. A shared space - common ground - where
arts, concerts and social events can happen - is a great way
to get people together. We have pioneered the idea of
friendship planting - bringing people from different culturalbackgrounds to plant and grow together.

Our vision is that all children across Scotland will grow up
seeing the fruit trees they planted, blossoming and bearing
fruit near to where they live. By picking and eating the fruit
they discover that what you grow and harvest yourself
always tastes better. We want children to eat healthily andgrowing food is a great way to do that. It’s great fun, too!
