A Student-Community Center for Cecilia, LouisianaFall 2012

By promo ng social interac ons and cultural enrichment in an educa onal environment, a collabora ve eff ort is formed within the school and community, promo ng educa onal success and community growth through cultural and individual values.

An extension of the exis ng Cecilia High School achieves this by ac ng as a student center for current students to socialize and enhance their educa on, while also ac ng as a community center for community events and to contribute to the educa on of the community.

5

The community center therefore becomes an extension of the school, allowing the public to u lize the school’s programs a er school hours and on weekends.

McKinley Park and McKinley Street Development

The development of the Freetown neighborhood presents the opportunity to connect to both the nearby University of Louisiana-Lafaye e and Downtown Lafaye e. Through the redevelopment of McKinley Street, that connec on can be formed. The intersec on of McKinley Street (the connec on to campus) and Jeff erson Street (the connec on to downtown) becomes the primary node through the establishment of McKinley Park. This redevelopment would include pedestrian friendly walkways, mixed use developments, residen al units, and adequate parking. The result would be a walkable neighborhood for families and students to live and interact.

Developing the corner of McKinley Street and Jeff erson Street presents an opportunity to respond to McKinley park directly across the street. The corner becomes a restaurant with outdoor sea ng, crea ng a con nua on of the park and the sidewalks. Parking for the residen al units is provided in the back of the building, and provides a pedestrian friendly walkway to bring visitors to the street.

IHM Church Masterplan & Prayer SpaceFall 2012 Masterplan by Hector Lasala

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church community wanted a vision for their community’s future. The masterplan, designed by Professor Hector Lasala, provided them with a look at how their community could become urbanized through denser development and placemaking.

These before and a er visualiza ons provided the community with a series of visuals to help envision their future.

The catalyst project in the IHM masterplan included an exterior prayer space at the primary intersec on of Surrey and 12th Street. The space includes a fountain with a statue visible to each of the space’s entry points and also facing the church’s exis ng crucifi x. The space provides a semi-public space for prayer, medita on, and refl ec on.

ThresholdSpring 2009

The act of crea ng or marking a threshold relies on an understanding of materialiy through its purpose and its proper es. The fi rst act includes interac ng with the ground through a concrete cas ng. The second involves resolving the rela onship between the stereotomic concrete form (as foo ng) and a mber post (as column) through the use of steel. The fi nal act is the interac on between column and beam through the crea on of a wood joint, without the aid of nails, screws, and other fasteners.

19

Roosevelt Montessori Academy

The tradi onal Montessori curriculum is based on the idea of providing a loosely structured curriculum that is primarily student driven. Building a Montessori school in an urban se ng provides problems with available space for play. This is solved by bringing the playground to the roof along with the cafeteria, turning the roof into a large social space that encourages interac on amongst students.

Fort Proctor is a pre-civil war fort in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. The fort is located on the shore of Lake Borgne just north of the mouth of Bayou Yscolskey. Due to delays caused by hurricanes and the outbreak of the American Civil War, the fort was never garrisoned, and by the end of the war improvements in ar llery had made the fort’s design obsolete. The construc on of the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal in the 1960s cut off all land access to the fort site. It can be seen in the distance from Shell Beach, Louisiana.By MEASURING the site’s CONSTANT and CHANGING forces, Fort Proctor is experienced in its historical context.

ULL Pedestrian Bridge & Visitor CenterFall 2009

The possible expansion of the University of Louisiana-Lafaye e’s campus across University Avenue calls a en on to the need of a safe way of traveling between the old campus and new campus. The pedestrian bridge would connect the two campuses while allowing for break out spaces promo ng social interac ons. Shops and cafes would line the bridge and turn it into a large social space. In addi on to the pedestrian bridge, a visitor center located under the bridge would provide an ideal loca on for visitors to learn about the University.

Located in Os a An ca, Italy, this proposed museum/hotel knits together the historical and contemporary vistas that exist in Os a’s surrounding context, crea ng a network of wayfi nders that relates the building to both its immediate and distant contexts. Thinking Design : An iPad Applica onSummer 2011 - Summer 2012 Project Leaders: Professors Corey Sa , Kari Smith,

Doug Williams, Yuxin Ma

Thinking Design is an iPad applica on developed by the University of Louisiana-Lafaye e’s architecture and CILAT departments. Its intent is to educate young kids about the basic principles of designing for comfort using passive design strategies by engaging scien fi c concepts such as heat gain and ven la on and applying them through the design of simple houses while trying to achieve maximum comfort levels.

The Case Study sec on allows the player to learn diff erent design strategies inherent in certain places and certain typologies, such as the Charleston Single house.

The Challenge sec on allows the player to apply the strategies learned in the tutorial towards a simple design that analyzes the inputs and displays the comfort level, dayligh ng, and ven la on based on the passive strategies employed.
