Chisenhale Chatter for Year 3 – Monday 20th April
Welcome back! This is a Chatter for this week up to Friday 24th April. We are going to spend this week planning the next few weeks so the ones
following this are going to look a little different. Keeping to a schedule, and making sure you do something everyday is really important, so do
make sure you try to follow the timetable.
This week we want you to try BBC Bitesize, which you can access on your computer, tablet, phone or even TV by pressing the red button. We also
want you to make sure you really understand how to access and follow the White Rose maths each day.
Here are a few updates from the staff in Year 3 this week.
Hi Year 3s (especially Thyme morning class),
hope you’re all ok and keeping yourself busy.
We’ve had some lovely weather so I’ve been
in my garden soaking up lots of Vitamin D
and even managed to have a picnic! Miss
you all and hope to see you soon. Asma xx
Hi Basil class,, I can't tell you how much I
have missed you all. Hope you have been doing
your study ladder and keeping yourselves busy
with other things. I have been busy with Flossy
my granddaughter, we have done some
gardening, made sand castles, been on lots of
walks to keep ourselves healthy. I have even
done the Joe wicks P.E which is very energetic ,
just keep doing what you have been doing and
hopefully soon we will be able to have a little
celebration when we get back too normal. Love
Janette x
Hello everyone, missing you all hope you are
keeping busy and staying positive. I'm still
doing Joe Wicks phew. My grandson had his
second birthday yesterday so that was a
lovely day. Hope to see you all very soon.
Love Sue xxx Hi Year 3, I hope you and your families are
well and have had a lovely Easter break! I
have been enjoying the wonderful weather from
my garden and been busy writing your reports.
My sisters and I have also been doing some
painting, which has been fun! I have missed
you all very much. Keep staying positive and
safe.
Ms Begum xxx
Hi LKS2, I hope you and your families are
all well and safe. I miss you all so much!
I've had a birthday over the holidays so I
owe you all some treats. Keep thinking
positive, learn a little each day and before
we know it we will all back together soon.
Stay safe love. Jane. Xx
Hi Year 3, I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break. I spent mine eating chocolate and then
working out with Joe Wicks to burn of all the calories! I got a Chocolate Orange Easter egg
which is my favourite! It's very difficult not being able to go outside during this lovely weather
but all the amazing effort you are all putting in means everything will go back to normal as
soon as possible. My wife and I go outside every week to clap for the NHS and support the
brilliant workers! I've also been writing your reports so I've had you all in my thoughts the last
couple of weeks, positive thoughts definitely! Keep on going and you all should be very proud of
yourselves! Mr Mortimer.
If you want to keep to a similar timetable to when we are in school, this is what
we suggested last week and hopefully it is keeping you in a routine:

Week beginning Tuesday 21st April
Reading ideas for this week
When the world turned upside down
The day when the world
turned upside down:
when a frown became a smile
and a smile became a frown.
When the mice chased the cats
the cats chased the dogs.
The dogs laughed out loud
at the pink and yellow frogs.
When you went to bed in the daytime
and got up at night.
When birds caught the school bus
and the cows took flight.
When the children ruled the world
and ice cream was for free
and the elephants shrank
to the size of a flea.
When the grass rained lollipops
up to the sky.
When you wanted to laugh
but could only cry.
This all happened when the
world turned upside down
after I went to bed
with a smile - not a frown.
By Margaret A. Savage
Tuesday Read the poem. What language do you like? Think about why you like these, considering the author’s choices. Pick 3 lines and write why you like these in
your exercise book. Remember to write the date (21.4.20) and title of the poem so that you know what your work links to.
You will have a reading task set each day related to this poem but we would also like perform this by the end of the week. Each day you will have some
lines to recite and practise. Today, practise learning the lines up to the word ‘frogs’. Can you learn these off by heart?
Wednesday Read the poem again. Does it remind you of any other poetry you have read?
Circle the words that rhyme. Can you spot any patterns? Why do you think the
author has used this technique in the poem?
Today, practise learning the lines up to the words ‘flea’. Can you learn these off by heart? Can you use actions to help you remember?
Thursday Write the date (23.4.20) and the title of the poem.
Can you choose your favourite verse from the poem and illustrate this.
Write your own verse for the poem. Think about what would turn your frown
into a smile. Make sure it matches the style of the original poem.
Today, practise learning the rest of the poem. Can you learn these off by heart? Can you use actions to help you remember?
Friday Answer these comprehension questions in your exercise book with the date
(24.4.20) and the title of the poem. Remember to write a full sentence using your best handwriting.
1. Read the first and last verse again. What is similar about them? What is different? What is the meaning of ‘I went to bed with a smile-not a
frown’? 2. What kind of emotions do you think this poem is trying to make the
reader feel? How has it done that?
Now it is time to put the whole poem together and perform this! This could be
to your family, to your toys or to yourself in the mirror. Does it have a rhythm when you read it? Which words or phrases did you
emphasise? Could you change your voice, tone or speed, to match the poem?
Could you add an action to match a line or word?
E4E: If you were inspired by this poem, you could always write a whole poem
in this style about the day how your frown turned into a smile!
Literacy ideas for this week
Tuesday Click on this link to follow the learning to identify pronouns. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhp3bdm
Pronouns replace nouns. If we didn't have pronouns, we'd have to keep
repeating our nouns and that would make our sentences awkward and repetitive.
For example, if we didn't use pronouns a sentence might look like this:
Tom went upstairs to Tom’s bedroom. Tom opened the door and Tom sat on
Tom’s bed.
Pronouns are short words like it, she, he, you, we, they, us and them.
They are used to describe either individuals or groups of people, rather than using their name or names.
Let’s look back at the example and use pronouns to replace some of the nouns.
Tom went upstairs to his bedroom. He opened the door and he sat on his bed.
Wednesday Click on this link to follow the learning to identify adjectives.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zvv8d6f
An adjective is a word that describes a noun (the name of a thing or a place). For example: It was a terrible book.
The word 'terrible' is an adjective. It tells us what the book (the noun) was like.
Adjectives can come before or after a noun.
The book she read on holiday was terrible
She read a terrible book on holiday
Thursday Click on this link to follow the learning to identify verbs.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfc2mfr
A verb is a word used to describe an action, state or occurrence.
Verbs can be used to describe an action (doing something).
For example, the word ‘jumping’ in this sentence: The rabbit was jumping in the field.
Write 5 sentences to describe what the gorilla would do in the jungle. Make sure to use powerful verbs and then underline the verbs you have used.

Read Please Mrs Butler by Allan Ahlberg.
Please Mrs Butler
Please Mrs Butler This boy Derek Drew
Keeps copying my work, Miss. What shall I do?
Go and sit in the hall, dear. Go and sit in the sink.
Take your books on the roof, my lamb.
Do whatever you think.
Please Mrs Butler This boy Derek Drew
Keeps taking my rubber, Miss.
What shall I do?
Keep it in your hand, dear. Hide it up your vest.
Swallow it if you like, my love.
Do what you think best.
Please Mrs Butler
This boy Derek Drew Keeps calling me rude names, Miss.
What shall I do?
Lock yourself in the cupboard, dear.
Run away to sea. Do whatever you can, my flower.
But don’t ask me!
Write the answers to these comprehension questions in your exercise book with the
date (24.4.20).
1. What is the name of the teacher?
2. What is the first thing Derek Drew does wrong?
3. Where does the teacher say the narrator should take their books?
4. What three things does the teacher say the narrator should do with the rubber?
5. What is the final complaint the narrator has about Derek Drew?
6. What does the teacher call the narrator in the last verse?
Maths ideas for this week
Please keep practising your times tables each day,
doing this in a variety of ways, including playing
Times Tables Rockstars.
Please use the White Rose learning activities as your
main maths each day. This is what we would have
taught you in school - https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/
If you have access to a printer, you can print off the worksheets at the ‘Get
the Activity’ link, if not you can write your working out and your answers
in your home learning exercise book. Remember to include the date so in the
margin and write the title of what you were learning, e.g. ‘Make a whole’.

Curriculum ideas for the Easter break
History
Use the BBC Bitesize lesson on ‘How to be a
Historian’ (timetabled on 20.4.20).
In class, we have already considered the
skills that we use. If you have completed the activities linked to this Bitesize lesson, you
could create a poster or write a set of instructions on ‘How to be a Historian’.
Remember to keep reading about things that interest you. This might include a period in
history. You could watch a Horrible Histories video to gain some further knowledge and be
entertained at the same time.
Geography Use the BBC Bitesize lesson on ‘Introduction to maps’ (timetabled on 21.4.20).
How will you remember the compass points?
Could you use an mnemonic, like Never Eat Shredded Wheat? (North, East, South, West)
One of the activities is to draw a map. This
will be a fun task! It suggests that you draw
a map of your street or local area. Can you remember street names? Remember these are
pronouns and need capital letters. How do the streets connect and join each other? Can you
add any landmarks? This could be your home, friend’s homes, a shop you visit, and so on.
It suggests they you download and print an activity sheet but it would be
better to draw this in your home learning exercise book. It would be ideal to use a ruler or something that will help you draw straight lines to keep this
neat and make it easy to use as a map.

PE Try the seven different fun ball activities suggested by Joe Wicks.

RE Ramadan will be starting this week. The five pillars of Islam provide a structure for Islamic daily spiritual life. Islam is like a house held up by five
strong pillars with central themes of purification and sharing with others. Muslims must not only believe in the five pillars, but also act on their beliefs.
One of the five pillars is Sawm meaning to fast during the month of
Ramadan.
Ramadan starts this week so I would like you to create a poster answering
these questions in note form or by drawing pictures and labelling them:
· What is Ramadan?
· When is Ramadan? · How is Ramadan celebrated?
· What is Eid?
You can learn about Ramadan here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpdtsbk/articles/zjc2bdm https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/23286976
Music Extra special news for music fans! Mrs Fallows’ choir has gone viral. They
have sung a song raising money for charity and were even featured on BBC news! So far they have raised over £26,000 for the charity Women’s Aid.
The link for the song is below so feel free to have a watch and see if you can spot a certain red haired teacher singing!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7U7iYxHw2Q
Mrs Fallows would love for you to have a go at singing along or learning
the words for yourself so that when we come back, we could have a singalong! The song is called “You’ve got a friend” by Carole King. Think
about the message the song is trying to send. Could you be a friend for someone today?
Science We are starting to learn about the final strand of Science – PHYSICS! What science learning do you think might be covered when learning about physics?
This week’s learning on BBC Bitesize is an ‘Introduction to light and dark’. What is
light? What do you already know about light? What does dark mean? What
knowledge do you have about the dark?
Activity 3 links to PE and music as it is a
song to help you remember all about light, from what is a light source to how it
travels through different surfaces.
Linked to light, you could try the virtual experiment on
LGFL called 3F ‘Light and Shadows’ learning new
scientific vocabulary http://ve34.lgfl.org.uk/
Thinking about shadows, why put an object in the light
and see how its shadow changes throughout the day. You could use your enquiry skill, observation over time,
and make a table to show the changes by writing or
drawing these. Did anything surprise you?
If you go out for your hour of exercise, where is your shadow? In front, to the side or behind you? What size is it? Does it change if you go outside at a
different times?
Just because we are focusing on learning about physics, that doesn’t mean
that we can forget about our biology and chemistry learning. Revisits of this
knowledge and these skills are important to help us to remember this learning over time. This could be on the human body, plants, animals, materials,
changing states and many more. We are continuing to add Studyladder tasks linked to these but you could always do some independent research as well.
Was anyone inspired to plant seeds after seeing Mrs Fallows’ niece’s seeds?
Ms Nyes was and has planted some sweetpeas – these are not edible but hopefully will be beautiful
flowers! If they grow, a photo will included in the
Chatter.
This is the dream!
Parents and Carers, we hope these ideas will keep the children busy but there are
additional daily ideas on Twinkl for 7-9 year olds:
