TANENBAUMCHAT’S SOCIAL MEDIAPROPELS COMMUNICATION

www.tanenbaumchat.org | 3

Social media has been heralded as the latest and greatest new marketing and community building tool overthe past several years, and TanenbaumCHAT is ready to jump on the bandwagon to really leverage these toolsfor building relationships and strengthening networks. Organizations that are using social media to maturetheir social culture and adapt their work for a networked age are seeing much more than a rise in ‘likes’ on theirFacebook Page. They are engaging new audiences, networking with other organizations, empowering newleaders, and listening carefully to their constituencies. TanenbaumCHAT is now moving to fully engage in thisintense and powerful experience, and to take advantage of the opportunity.

TANENBAUMCHATmakes a splash at the SRC

The official opening of the Schwartz/Reisman Centre was great news for the TCK Swim Team who now callthe new Stupp Aquatic Centre home. Team coach Emily White says the kids are thrilled. “Once they arriveat school they can quickly change and be warming up in the pool. We have more time to practice and nowenjoy the convenience of having a pool physically connected to our school.” Participating in extra curricular athletics has great value for our students. No matter what their sport, students active in athletics develop their time management skills in order to balance their curricular and extracurricular obligations. Being a part of a team helps them strengthen social skills, leadership and fosters teambuilding. What sets our swimmers apart is that they mostly compete individually (other than relays). They need tobe at the top of their “game” and perform well at each meet. They can’t depend on anyone but themselves. This type of competition allows our students to see what they’re made of and see how far they can pushtheir own limits. Swimmers come in at all levels and strive to reach their physical and psychological potentialwith the help of our excellent coaches. “The swim team has an excellent history of having all its membersqualify and compete at the YRAA championships and this year appears to be no different!”

Students involved in the Kimel Centre Visual Arts Department learn many valuable skills that aid in their success in a highly visual world.Art students connect to the past and also project their ideas onto the future by envisioning, critiquing, reflecting and relating to the visual worldaround them. They learn to appreciate and use historical techniques and materials as well as gain mastery of contemporary technologies andconcepts. Participating in visual arts classes gives students collaborative experiences, confidence and creative problem-solving skills that are highlyvalued in today's workplace. Finally, arts courses offer the invaluable opportunity for the self-expression that teenagers crave as part of discoveringwho they truly are.

THE ARTS@

In its 6th year, the Kimel Centre music program continues to thrive. The Symphonic Band had a very busy start to the year performing sixtimes at Feeder School Tours, Academic Awards, Grade 8 Open House, and the Grand Opening of the Schwartz / Reisman Centre. The vocalclass, now in its second year, has doubled in size and students enjoy singing choral music in a variety of styles including jazz, popular, classicaland musical theatre. Arts Café performances were a huge success which included all of the major ensembles, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble,Concert Band, Senior Jazz Band and the TCK singers. Our dynamic and hard-working students make the music department a magical place tobe.

‘‘ ’’ducators can make a difference and that’s exactly why a new program was implemented to tackle the issue

of mental health at TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg campus. “Disable the Label” was designed to create both anawareness of mental health issues and, at the same time, give students a safe and comfortable place to talk about“the elephant in the room.”

When Margaret Klompas, Head of Guidance for Wallenberg campus, attended a “Focus on Mental Health” conferencegeared to post high school institutions, she was struck by one of the statistics: “Seventy per cent of adults living withmental illness say symptoms developed before they were eighteen years old. The fear of stigma often delays diagnosisand treatment; therefore, early intervention can make an enormous difference over a lifetime.”

The Guidance Team was then mobilized and together with the Dean of Students, started to plan a year-long series ofevents, under this year’s school theme of Creating a Caring Community, to educate both staff and students. A calloutto TanenbaumCHAT alumni was made inviting them to take part in a panel discussion for students to share how theirillness affected them during high school and university and how they coped with their challenges. After receiving anoverwhelming amount of replies, Mrs. Klompas realized that she had obviously touched a nerve. Current studentsalso volunteered to help form a student committee.

Presentations and a panel discussion by alumni for students have already taken place on eating disorders, bullying, drinking and driving, anxiety, as well as a presentation from Kids Help Phone. Faculty also received presentations oneating disorders, anxiety in students and the stigma attached to mental health disorders. Mrs. Klompas wants staffand students to understand that people who suffer from mental illness could actually be suffering twice – from theillness and from the lack of understanding.

165 new students were welcomed for a morning of activity at TanenbaumCHAT’sWallenberg Campus .... well, not the usual students. These ‘students’, of anothervintage shall we say, were equally as eager to participate in classroomactivities … our very own TanenbaumCHAT grandparents.

Grandparents were welcomed by a host of volunteers, including the Tiger mascot. After registration, breakfast and a welcome program, grandparents had their

timetables in hand and were escorted to their grandchild’s class for an interactive hour oflearning. This was really the highlight of their day … and all received passing grades!

Upon her arrival in Canada in 1948,Bella wasdetermined to set herself free from the atrocities thatshe had endured. Determined to lead a meaningful lifewhile committed to learning, Bella mastered the Englishlanguage in three months and completed five grades ofelementary school in one year to catch up to her peers. As a voracious learner and top student at cheder, shewas soon selected by the Rabbi to become one of theteachers at Talmud Torah. Years later as a grandmother,Bella applied her love of reading, Hebrew and Torah byvolunteering at United Synagogue Day School as bothlibrarian and tutor in Torah for students in the youngergrades. In 1957, Bella met her husband Aaron. During their53 years of marriage, they were blessed with two childrenand six grandchildren. Among Bella’s most notablequalities were her fierce loyalty to her family, her naturalpoise and elegance, her insatiable appetite for learning, and her innate business sense. Due to circumstance, Bella was not able to attenduniversity after high school, but that did not lessen herdesire for a university education. When her childrenstarted university, she also enrolled, on a part-time basisat York University. Although it took a little longer thanthe traditional four years, in 1991 Bella was awardedan honors BA in combined psychology and sociologywith a minor in Jewish studies. She was a remarkablyintelligent woman who imbued in her children and hergrandchildren a thirst for learning. For the Nussbaum family, creating the

preserves Bella’smemory. Her fervent desire was always to perpetuate astrong Jewish future through education and community. Her life was devoted to raising her family and she oftensaid that one of her proudest achievements was sendingall six of her grandchildren to Hebrew day school. Thisgift to TanenbaumCHAT is the perfect vehicle for theNussbaum family to provide future generations with aquality Jewish education that they in turn can associatewith the memory of Bella Nussbaum; a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

Bella Nussbaum z’’l was born in Kanczuga, Poland on February 10th, 1938.

She survived the horrors of the war by hiding with her family for

two and a half years in the attics and fields of several Righteous Gentiles.

CHAT J O A N N E F R I S C H ’ 99with our Alum

We recently sat down with Joanne Frisch ’99, of CS&P Architects Inc., and Project Manager of the expansion

of TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg campus.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a degree in architecture?I decided to be an architect on Career Day in Grade 11 at CHAT. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew my favorite subjects were math and art.

What were your academic pursuits after you graduated from CHAT?I did a Bachelor of Science, Architecture degree at McGill and a Master of Architecture degree at the University of Illinois. During these two programs I had the opportunity to study abroad in Australia and Spain.

What is your favourite CHAT memory?Grade 12 Talmud. Studying with friends for multiple days well into the nights – chevrutah style was great. Our hard core studying was balanced by Friday classes when our teacher, Rav Gurvitz, would bring in his stereo for impromptu singing sessions. I still sing those songs with friends sometimes and reminisce.

As a graduate of the school, do you have a different sense of pride working on the GuttmanFamily Science Wing than for other projects?I have a great appreciation for the dedication and hard work that occurs behind the scenes to create a strong and intimate community in most projects. Here though, it’s a unique feeling to actually be a part of the community.

What has been your biggest challenge with this project? One challenge has been creating an environment that meets the current needs of the school, while planning for the future. Technology, curriculum and teaching models are evolving rapidly. We have to respond with design so that kids will be interested to learn and explore both in class and outside of class.

I will be completing my term asPresident of TanenbaumCHAT at thisyear’s Annual General Meeting. It hasbeen a rewarding, stimulating andchallenging experience – and I havetreasured every moment. I becameinvolved with the Board when my sonstarted at the school in 2004, andhave had the privilege of serving on theBoard and many different committeessince then. My term ends as my youngestchild graduates from TanenbaumCHATthis spring. The past year has been extraordinarilybusy for the lay leadership at ourschool. It has been a honour to work withsuch a committed and dedicated Boardof Directors whose wisdom and visionhave been invaluable. We broke groundon the Guttman Family Science winglast spring, and are fulfilling the longawaited dream for state of the artscience facilities at Wallenberg campus. Our Together Campaign Committee iscontinuing to work very hard to raisethe remaining funds. The SearchCommittee is also currently very involvedin the process of searching for a newHead of School to lead TanenbaumCHATinto the future. We could not achieve our goalswithout the involvement and contributions of so many people to different aspects ofschool life – our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, lay leadership and all ofour volunteers. As my term comes to an end, I would like to acknowledge everyoneinvolved with TanenbaumCHAT. A school’s reputation is built upon the success of itsstudents. Our students go on to find success and become leaders all over the world. We are committed to securing the future of superior Jewish high school education inToronto.

A fresh, new marketing campaign, profiling the slogan “I amTanenbaumCHAT” opened the 2011/12 school year. This slogan wasshowcased on bus shelters, T-shirts, banners and our revamped website. We promoted our brand on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to show themany facets of the TanenbaumCHAT Experience. We had another stellar year of outstanding success in so many areas, from the Shabbaton program to music and athletics. The accomplishmentsof our students and the staff are unparalleled and the list goes on and on. We were privileged to have two inspirational speakers address us,Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of England, and Rabbi DonnielHartman, President of the Shalom Harman Institute in Jerusalem, whospoke about the “Future of Judaism” as the Ronald and Aviva Hellermemorial lecturer. Much of our effort this year was focused on ensuring the constructionof the new Guttman Family Science Wing on the Wallenberg Campuscould commence at the end of the school year. In order to meet this goal,we had to raise $7.5M, finalize the architectural drawings, contract aproject manager and secure building permits from the City of Toronto. Thanks to the efforts of many people, all targets were met and constructiongot underway as planned when the school year drew to a close in June. Paul Shaviv took his leave in June. Over 5,700 Generation Y students, born to baby boomers between 1981 and 1997, were directly impactedby his leadership and vision during the 14 years he served as Directorof Education. I am confident that under the exemplary leadership of ourCampus Principals Helen Fox and Jonathan Levy, Director of JewishStudies Sam Kapustin, Director of Advancement Frances Bigman, BoardPresident Cecile Zaifman and Board Chair Les Fluxgold, the school willcontinue to go from strength to strength.

ADVANCEMENT REPORT

ADVANCING THE MISSION OF OUR SCHOOL

The Advancement Department has the unique andrewarding opportunity through their work to advocate for andultimately help deliver the mission of the school. By identifying, recruiting and stewarding human and financial means we areensuring that TanenbaumCHAT has all the resources requiredto prepare our students for a lifetime of individual accomplish-ment, Jewish commitment and community leadership. This school year marked the evolution of the DevelopmentOffice into a 21st century Advancement Office, integratingthe school’s admission, development and marketing/communications programs. The advancement team workedtirelessly to successfully integrate these strategic functions. Theresult was an amazing year launching an exciting newrecruitment campaign, two outstanding editions of theCHATTER, highly professional e-newsletters and collateralcampaign materials, all wrapped up in a 10,000 squarefoot tent at the groundbreaking for the new Guttman FamilyScience Wing. It was a heady celebration – the school hadraised $7.6 million dollars!

And there was more! As donors were identified andcultivated for the new science wing – even more supportfor the school was discovered, leading to more excitingenhancements in other areas of school life. The TogetherCampaign seemed to create a new momentum of excitingredevelopment. Nearly $300,000 additional dollars wereraised for new projects including significant improvementsto the TCW drama studio and discussions for the same atTCK; a new Jewish Studies Remediation Centre and an interimBeit Midrash for the Wallenberg campus; enhancementsto the TCW Art Studio and upgraded technology at theKimel Centre. Most exciting for TCK students – 10 new sofasthroughout the campus for their exclusive use. The TanenbaumCHAT Advancement Office understandsthat the recruitment of students and the recruitment of donorsprovide the two streams of revenue crucial to fiscal stabilityand school viability—hard income (tuition and fees) and softincome (donations). We are thrilled that we have adoptedthis overarching, analytical framework that will lead us toincreased recruitment and fundraising success in the future.

OUR GRADUATES LEAVE WITH A SENSE OF PURPOSE AND A

BELIEF THAT THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

IN THE WORLDTanenbaumCHAT is a community of inclusion wherestudents and faculty work together in order to reach eachstudent’s greatest potential. Through participation in activitiesinside and outside the classroom, students learn, throughcollaboration, the critical thinking and problem-solving lifeskills that are so critical to success. Multiple opportunities aremade available to provide students with a chance to pursuetheir passions or explore new ones. The myriad of optionsincludes clubs, committees, theatre, film and music festivals, talent show, Shabbatonim, philanthropic activities, athletics, yearbook, academic competitions and entrepreneurialactivities. Through these avenues students learn to assumeleadership roles and create programming as well as interactwith teachers and students of various grades. In 2011/12 the Education Committee spent the yearlooking at how the TanenbaumCHAT Experience shapesthe whole child. Faculty members who provide the students

with their career and civics curriculum, guidance, athletics, student services and Judaic programming activities were allinvited to present. The facilitators provided insight into theeducational philosophy behind the programs, and clearlyarticulated the goals and expected outcomes of each. Whatwas highlighted was the nurturing environment wherein staffbuilt ongoing relationships with students in order to foster thetools for self-empowerment and self-advocacy for each student. The positive results produced through the support, guidanceand encouragement of the TanenbaumCHAT staff are evidentthroughout the school year. The impact of the Tanenbaum-CHAT Experience is the building of character, Jewishidentity and a sense of belonging that our students carry withthem into adulthood. With their individual skills and valuesstrengthened during their four years at TanenbaumCHAT, ourgraduates leave with a sense of purpose and a belief thatthey can make a difference in the world.

LIFE IN SCHOOLS is a complicated and varied phenomenon:complicated because so many different factors contribute toeducational success, and varied, because it is often difficult toidentify and categorize them. Those who may not know, or perhapsnever knew, what really transpires in schools tend to imagine thatit’s only about students sitting in a classroom with teachers up fronttransmitting information. If that stereotype was ever true, it iscertainly no longer the case. The evolving role of the teacher, sometimes described as “from the sage on the stage to the guideon the side”, coupled with technology and a renewed appreciationof the student as an active partner in the learning process, allbelie this imperfect picture present in the minds of many. Perhaps we appreciate today more than in the past that just aswe must relate to the whole child, we must similarly relate to thewhole environment. At TanenbaumCHAT, it is not only reflected inthe myriad of extra-curricular, student activities on offer, but also ina number of recent additions that might be easily, and mistakenly, overlooked, despite the significance of their impact. To mention just a few:1) The Bella Toba Nussbaum z”l Jewish Studies Remediation Centre, which for the first time provides a stable home for the large number of our students who benefit from systematic, individualized attention to help them fulfill their potential in Jewish Studies.

2) The soon to be completed interim Wallenberg Campus Beit Midrash, will provide all students with a fitting venue for prayer and the study of Talmud.3) The appointment of Ilana Shapira as the new Director of Ivrit, a post not filled for two years, indicating both the dearth of qualified candidates and the School’s tenacity in finding the right professional for this demanding and crucial position.4) The essential and ongoing work of Jewish Studies curriculum development, the outcome of countless hours by many teachers to provide a continually updated, meaningful and engaging program that will meet the educational and pedagogic needs of all students. Are these simply “bells and whistles” that we could just as easilydo without? Absolutely not, not if we wish to maintain our commit-ment to excellence and to enriching the total TanenbaumCHATExperience.

After all, the Jewish life in our school is too precious

for the Jewish future to be left to chance.
