2015 PROPERTY TAXES BY WARDChicago property owners — homeowners and businesses — were billed more than $4.4 billion for property taxes last year by the city, the Chicago Board of Education, Cook County and other government bodies. The 42nd Ward had the city’s heaviest property-tax burden. And it will grow this year when city residents are hit with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s property-tax hike. The tax increase won’t have as much impact on many wards where median home values are below $200,000. Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios sets those values — usually far below market value. Property owners then pay taxes on 10 percent of the assessor’s value.
