(v.) to increase in size, number, strength, prosperity, or intensity.

Ministrations

(n.) assistance in a time of difficulty

“Regularly, each morning after he had finished his breakfast, she performed her self-appointed task, till he came to look for her

ministrations as much as he did for Thornton's.”

Enticed

“As Buck grew stronger they enticed him into all sorts of ridiculous

games…”

Verb-to lead on by exciting hope or desire; allure; inveigle

Writhe

Verb-to twist the body about, or squirm, as in pain, violent effort, etc.

“His whole body was gathered compactly together in the tremendous effort, the

muscles writhing and knotting like live things under the silky fur.”

Contagion

(n.) the spreading of an emotion or idea.

“He had caught the contagion of the excitement, and he felt that in some way he must do a great

thing for John Thornton.”

Forbear(v.) to refrain from doing, constraining

oneself, resist

“...they enticed him into all sorts of ridiculous games, in which Thornton himself could not forbear to join;

and in this fashion Buck romped through his convalescence and into a new existence.”

Akin(Adj.) Similar in quality or character

Pompous (adj.) Characterized by ceremony and pomp and

stately display.

“With the Judge’s sons hunting and tramping it had been a working partnership with the Judge’s

grandson’s a sort of pompous guardianship and with the Judge himself a stately and dignified friendship.”

Terrell Owens is pompous about himself.

Mandate

(noun) a official order or law to do something

“Kill or be killed, eaten or be eaten, was the law; and this mandate, down to the depths of time, he obeyed.”

Ecstasy (noun) A feeling of great happiness or excitement.

CHASM

(noun) a deep opening in the earth’s surface
