Man Named Moses

Was really a women named Harriet Tubman, she was a successful run away slave who,was the in control of the UndergroundRail Road.

Twice a year, in the spring and the fall,Harriet would return to the Eastern Shore ofMaryland and gather a group of slaves and help them to escape to freedom

When she arrived to the plantations, shewould announce her presence by softlysinging “go Down Moses,' way down to Egypt land” , a forbidden negro spiritual

Harriet would be on the plantation for days, planning the trip and selecting those to goalong with her to Canada. The largest groupgroup she ever traveled with was eleven atone time.

When Harriet and the other run fugitives decided to start their journey they traveled at night and rested during the day. The further north they got, the nights grew colder and more brutal. Many slaves thought of turning back but…

Harriet had a gun. She never used it, but threatened people into continuing the journey. If a fugitive was to return to the plantation the lives of all fugitives especially Harriet would be endanger and the secret escape route would be reviled

Along their journey fugitives were helped by whites who thought slavery was wrong. They would give them food, shelter and sometimes shoes to make their journey more comfortable.

After 3 long months of traveling Harriet whispered to the family, “We are almost there.”

Everyone grew more excited at the thought they were almost to freedom. The fugitives realized how far they came and knew they couldn’t turn back now regardless of how worn out they were.

Finally Harriet and the family made it to Canada, they were finally free. They all praised among each other.

Harriet and the fugitives all settled in a cabin and got jobs, helping one another until they were able to live on their own.

…and every spring and fall Harriet continued to travel South to help other fugitives get to freedom
