Concept for an on-site interactive catalogue experience that invites visitor’s participation in a museum exhibit. This was in response to the ask: "Your challenge is create a design solution that encourages and persuades encourage and persuade people to adopt more energy-saving behavior instead of just informing." This project was done in collaboration with students from the School of Fine Arts and Human Computer Interaction Design programs at Indiana University Bloomington. My teammates for this project were Sasha Chaplin, William Duxbury, Yizhou Pan, and Mary Prusha. This is one of the projects for Marty Siegel's Rapid Design for Slow Change course at Indiana University Bloomington.

Fuller’s Vision

Increase understanding of Fuller’s vision through an on-site interactive catalogue experience that invites visitor’s participation.

Core

“You can experience art from all angles at the Indiana University Art Museum.” [1]

The IU Art Museum already encourages visitors’ participation through its installations.

“How do we make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or disadvantage to anyone?”

- Buckminster Fuller

“How do we make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation Through the exhibit and catalogue we are embodying spontaneous cooperation as a driving value.

About the Catalogue

Meet Sarah and Jenna Julie & Brittany are undergraduate students at IU. One of the items in their bucket list is to visit the Art Museum, so they decided to visit one weekend.

They notice the featured exhibit on Buckminster Fuller’s work. But they are not familiar with any of it.

As they enter the museum, they notice a large geodesic dome with a rotating globe depicted. Curious, they each tapped on the dome, and they notice a menu appear.

Meet Lance

In the About section she reads a biography of Fuller and his legacy. She can navigate back using the arrow.

She then chooses the Designs section.

And she chooses the Dymaxion Car from the Designs sub-menu.

She is able to read more about each of the designs. By swiping to the left, she can view other designs.

Once they are done exploring, they go through the rest of the exhibit.

Josh is a graphic designer in Bloomington. He is familiar with Fuller’s work, and decided to go see the exhibit dedicated to one of his design heroes.

As josh enters the museum, he notices a dome and people interacting with it. But he chooses to start with the exhibit.

Josh notices a small display prompting him to reflect where would he see this design implemented in the world.

As he exits the exhibit, Josh notices different text bubbles that appear pinned to the world map, similar to what he saw inside the exhibit.

Josh chooses to participate, and taps on the map, in the Participate section.

Where do you see Fuller’s Designs making a difference? Pin it!

He sees a similar screen as inside the exhibit. He can zoom in to a specific area, and tap where he wants to pin a design.

When he is done, he sees a small bubble appear in the area where he pinned it. This will then become part of larger display.

We created an on-site interactive catalogue to drive visitors into the IU Art Museum. Through this catalogue we are relating Buckminster Fuller’s ideas and visions to everyday life.
