This project explored the combination of a greenhouse with a middle school, located in Ann Arbor, MI, on a site a few blocks from downtown. I was interested in the overlapping of certain spaces in a school; for example, extra wide circulation space that could double as the art classroom and library, and also how the introduction of a greenhouse would transform the dynamics of the school and the people inside.

This project continued the investigation into the role Stewardship had in school, especially a school combinedwith a public greenhouse. In this environment, there are multiple levels of Stewardship, such as the Stewardship the teachers have over the students, the Stewardship the students have over each other and their school, and the Stewardship of the school over the public.

The program was a temporary single occupancy residency (SRO) for young adults (ages 18-24) in the Chicago area. The site was located at Madison and State Street, presenting the uniqueness of a project for the homeless at a 100% location. My project is a study of the different realms of private and public space, acting in levels, from the public park, to the semi-public winter garden, to the private resident spaces at the very back of the site.

The purpose of this case study was to decipher the structure of the Switch Building by recreating the plans and modeling the building. This project was completed utilizing BIM software (Revit by Autodesk).

This project was an interpretation of the Switch Building and what it might look like if it was on a larger scale. The general floor plan was given; the main point of design were the two street facing facades. The biggest challenge faced was to match up the structural system with the new facade design. This was the final construction project for seniors.

The goal of the facade was to adapt the Switch Building’s “flipping” facade onto a larger scale. The main challenge was to line up the facade with the preexisting structure.

This studio considers the ancient structures of theater within 21st century speeds of transnational architecture on the move. The actions of Raoul Wallenberg in the context of WWII and the Holocaust articulate the drama and complexity of colliding situations that demonstrate the power of relational thinking as an essential aspect to the success of any organizational structure. By duping the State, Wallenberg made a space where none previously existed; a space of asylum = a quiet form of amnesty affording a profound sense of freedom. This is a making intensive studio that cares for staging the work through highly considered material-cultural translations through design. The work focuses on developing an ethics of aesthetic discourse; combining methodological approaches that shift the roles of sites, authors, and programs; an intensive clinic with internationally renowned actors and artists; several pieces of fieldwork; and, efforts that sharpen architecture’s cultural resonances.

Amnesty Through Different Levels of Consciousness
Utilizing the city of Pergamon, in ancient Greece, the aim of this project was to draw parallels between the asclepion, or a place of healing through moral encouragement, and modern day isolation tanks and sleep chambers. The somnambulist Cesare, from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari acted as the project’s main source of guidance. The aim of the designed spaces is to generate a space of amnesty through the creation of spaces and mental states of being that were previously thought to be unattainable. As we move further into the 21st century, architecture’s role is becoming more prominent and influential in everyday life, and this project seeks to expound on architecture’s inflence over an individual’s state of being.
