Tour Summary
Thursday, 5th
October:
The first two members of the group (Lars and Erik) were collected from the International Airport in
Rio, and by 06:00 they were on their way up to the lodge. They arrived in good time, just after 08:30,
having picked up a few species on the journey, including Magnificent Frigatebird, Sick’s Swift,
Smooth-billed Ani, Cattle Egret, Great Egret and Kelp Gull. We started to watch the birds coming in
and out of the feeders, and get to grips with some of the commoner species around the lodge. The
feeders were quite busy, with Azure-shouldered Tanagers, Ruby-crowned Tanagers, Burnished-buff
Tanagers, Maroon-bellied Parakeets, Magpie
Tanagers, Great Kiskadee and Slaty-breasted
Wood Rail. The hummingbird feeders were
pretty busy too, with visits from Black Jacobin,
Violet-capped Woodnymph, Scale-throated
Hermit, White-throated Hummingbird, Brazilian
Ruby, and also a first for the Itororo Lodge
grounds: a stunning male Frilled Coquette!
Close to the decking area, we also had Planalto
Tyrannulet, Pallid Spinetail, Surucua Trogon,
Lineated Woodpecker, White-eyed Parakeet,
Bare-throated Bellbird, Pale-breasted Thrush,
Creamy-bellied Thrush, Hooded Siskin and
Crested Oropendola.
We sat down for a well-earned lunch at 12:30, and then had a short break (Lars managed to see and
photograph a White-shouldered Fire-eye during this time) before the rest of the group arrived at 14:30.
They also had lunch, and then at 16:15 we set off for a short walk towards the White Trail. It was
already quite late in the day and the sun was going down behind the distant mountains. There was,
however, quite a bit of activity on feeder 4, with
a Green-winged Saltator, Slaty-breasted Wood
Rail, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Sayaca
Tanager and Grey-fronted Dove. We continued
along the trail and soon came across a small
mixed flock, including both Olivaceous and
Scaled Woodcreepers, Brassy-breasted Tanager,
Chestnut-crowned Becard, Surucua Trogon,
Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner, Pin-tailed Manakin
and Golden-crowned Warbler.
As we entered the forest, the light levels dropped.
We did, however, manage to call in a Variegated
Antpitta, which showed well for some and flew over us once, giving pretty good but brief views. We
also used some playback for Rufous-capped Motmot and managed to call one in; but again, just brief
views were had as it perched above us for a very short time. We used some playback for a Rufous-
tailed Antthrush which didn’t want to come any closer – and to be honest, it was getting so dark we
wouldn’t have seen it anyway!

We decided to start heading back to the lodge, and to stop at our Long-trained Nightjar spot. As usual,
this wonderful bird appeared at around 18:00, and landed close by on the ground, giving fantastic
views! We got back to the lodge around 18:20 and sat down for dinner at 18.30; followed by a small
presentation by Rainer about the lodge’s history,
and then we completed our first daily checklist
before retiring to bed to recharge, ready for Pico
da Caledonia tomorrow!
Friday, 6th
October:
We were greeted by a clear and beautiful
morning! Today was clearly the day to bird the
higher elevations of the surrounding mountains
at Pico da Caledonia. We departed from the
lodge at 06:30; and by 07:30, we were making
our way up the mountain for what turned out to
be a great day’s birding!
We started off with a small mixed flock, which included Rufous-crowned Greenlet, Brassy-breasted
Tanager, Bay-chested Warbling Finch and a Black-and-gold Cotinga – although the cotinga wasn’t
showing particularly well, as it was obscured by some leaves. We continued up the track and got some
good views of a Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin and came across a couple of Thick-billed Saltators,
followed by a Rufous-backed Antvireo, a female Blue-billed Black Tyrant and our first Diademed
Tanagers. As we made our way further up the mountain, we watched a White-tailed Hawk flying over
high, and then got to grips with our first Rufous-tailed Antbird! Next up was a bit of “fishing” for a
Large-tailed Antshrike, another high-altitude endemic. I used playback several times with no response;
then suddenly, right in front of us was a male Large-tailed Antshrike… Perfect! Next we came across a
couple of Serra do Mar Tyrannulets, and shortly afterwards an Olivaceous Elaenia – all was going to
plan! Erik then said he had a black bird in his scope; thankfully, this turned out to be a Velvety-black
Tyrant.
Whilst scanning for a Grey-winged Cotinga, we had a Campo Flicker fly across high – very strange to
see this at such high altitude. Still scanning, I finally picked up a cotinga-shaped figure under a distant
tree. Looking through Erik’s scope, it became
clear that this was indeed the Grey-winged
Cotinga. Unfortunately, it didn’t stick around
very long and only a few members of the group
managed to get quick looks at this very localised
endemic. We tried for this bird several more
times throughout the rest of the day, but without
any luck.
We finally reached the security guard hut, signed
in and started walking up towards the beginning
of the 620 steps that would take us to the summit
– hopefully finding an Itatiaia Thistletail in the
Surucua Trogon by Erik Hirschfeld

process! We started our ascent and played the thistletail intermittently, we got a couple of responses
from distant individuals, but they refused to come any closer. Nearing the top, we finally got views of a
thistletail – rather quick ones, but good nonetheless! As we were so close to the top, we decided to go
all the way up for the views from the top, had lunch and managed to call in another thistletail – much
better views this time!
Having finally found the Itatiaia Thistletail, had
lunch and recharged, we started to make our
way back down the 620 steps. Nearing the
bottom of these, we finally picked up our first
Plovercrest. I had expected to see more on the
way up the mountain, so this came as quite a
relief! This was followed again by some really
close-up views of Diademed Tanagers. As we
made our way further down, we used playback
to call in a couple of Orange-eyed Thornbirds
that showed well, this was followed by views of
a male Yellow-legged Thrush and a Rufous
Gnateater.
A little tired, we arrived back at the minibus and took a 5-minute drive to our next stop. Here we used
some playback for our now very reliable Red-legged Seriema, and within minutes we had 2 of them in
front of us – such great views! This was followed shortly afterwards by great views of some Swallow-
tailed Cotingas, Shear-tailed Grey Tyrant, Hooded Siskin and a Variegated Flycatcher.
It had been a great first full day’s birding. We arrived back at the lodge at around 17:00, and met up
again to do the checklist at 18:00, followed shortly afterwards by dinner.
Saturday, 7th
October:
Another clear morning greeted us. Just before setting off, we tried for Half-collared Sparrow in front of
the lodge as there was one calling. Unfortunately, they didn’t come in. We did, however, get a nice
male Dusky-tailed Antbird, 3 White Woodpeckers and a Green-backed Becard. We set off for a full
day’s birding on the Macae de Cima Trail. This
trail runs through mostly primary forest, and has
a great selection of birds. At our first stop things
were pretty quiet, but we did manage to get
good views of a pair of Giant Antshrikes, Scale-
throated Hermit, Whiskered Myiobius, Crested
Oropendolas, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia and a
Chestnut-crowned Becard.
At our second stop (after offering a money back
guarantee if we didn’t see any Bare-throated
Bellbirds during the week!), I was very happy to
hear bellbirds calling loudly. It wasn’t long

before I lined up the telescope on a calling male – and breathed a sigh of relief! We also tried for
Black-billed Scythebill in the same area, but with no response. I played some Chestnut-headed Tanager
next, and we managed to call in a female that showed nicely for the group, followed by a Green-backed
Becard, White-winged Becard, Black-goggled Tanager and a Yellow-eared Woodpecker.
Our next stop was at our very reliable
Plovercrest lek. As we got out of the minibus,
there was a Yellow-browed Woodpecker
calling, so we used playback to call this in.
Although the light was not that good, we did
get nice views of the bird. The tiny Green-
crowned Plovercrests put on a good show and
gave good scope views for the whole group –
nice to see these really well! We drove over
the highest point on the track and started to
make our way downhill into the next valley,
picking up very poor views of a Spot-billed
Toucanet, but excellent views of a very
cooperative White-throated Woodcreeper and
Lesser Woodcreeper!
The weather started to slowly deteriorate, so we decided to drive directly to one of our best spots along
this track, where we usually get a good selection of birds, in case the rain came early, as we didn’t want
to miss out on some of the target birds in this area. We tried for the Slaty Bristlefront but this,
unfortunately, refused to show today. We did, however, get good views of a stunning White-bibbed
Antbird, Spot-billed Toucanet, Lesser Woodcreeper, Surucua Trogon, a fantastic male Pin-tailed
Manakin and a male Blue Manakin.
As the clouds built up and it slowly got darker, we drove to our
spot for White-bearded Antshrike. As usual, this bird showed
incredibly well for the whole group… Brilliant! We decided to
have lunch at this point, and afterwards drove a little further back
along the track and picked up a pair of Ochre-rumped Antbirds,
Greenish Schiffornis, Tufted Antshrike, Yellow Tyrannulet and
heard a Spotted Bamboowren. We had a few more stops on the
way back, but by this stage the clouds were very dark over us and
it had started to rain, so we decided to head straight back to the
lodge, arriving shortly after 16:30. We had some free time prior
to meeting up for the checklist at 18:00, followed by dinner at
18:30.
Sunday, 8th
October:
We awoke to a very cloudy and damp morning, and decided to
go for the Three-toed Jacamar and some open country birding
around Duas Barras and Sumidouro. As we made our way

through Nova Friburgo (always quick on a Sunday morning!), the weather started to clear up and by the
time we arrived at our first stop, the sun was shining – perfect! We soon got into some birding action,
with new birds coming thick and fast. These included Blue-winged Macaw, Streamer-tailed Tyrant,
Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Yellow-bellied Elaenia, Blackish Rail, White-crested Tyrannulet, Whistling
Heron, Smooth-billed Ani, Glittering-bellied
Emerald and Yellow-chinned Spinetail. Our
second stop of the day was for a specific target:
the Serra Antwren. Thankfully, this endemic
showed very well after about 5 minutes of us
turning up. This was followed by a couple of
Grey-eyed Greenlets, Rufous Gnateater,
Uniform Finch and a small flock of Gilt-edged
Tanagers. Across the road was a small marsh
area, where we managed to get good views of
Capped Heron, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Black-
capped Donacobius and Yellow-chinned
Spinetail.
Our next stop was at a viewpoint overlooking a small valley. Here we got views of Lesser Yellow-
headed Vulture, our first White-tailed Hawk of the day, White-rumped Swallow, Brown-chested
Martin, and Lars managed to pick up a Grassland Sparrow for the group.
We stopped in the small town of Duas Barras for some coffee and cake, and to use the bathroom. Vern
managed to spot a Long-tailed Tyrant in the town square, together with some Grey-breasted Martins.
Shortly afterwards, we made our way to the dirt road that links through to Sumidouro and which has
some great birding spots along it. Our first stop was for a couple of Ultramarine Grosbeaks, followed
by Firewood-gatherer and a Masked Water
Tyrant. We then drove up the hill and into a
small fragment of forest, where we picked up a
Planalto Tyrannulet and a rather cooperative
Southern Antpipit! We stopped quickly for
some White Woodpeckers by the road; Lars
managed to pick up a Plumbeous Kite at the
same spot, followed by a Yellow-lored Tody-
Flycatcher a little further on. Our next stop was
a little farm area, where we saw Brazilian Teal,
Tawny-headed Swallow, Green-backed Becard,
Band-tailed Hornero, White-rumped Monjita,
Red-rumped Cacique and Chestnut-capped
Blackbird.
Next up was a stop for some White-eared Puffbirds – always a firm favourite! As usual, these great-
looking birds responded well to playback and gave some good photographic opportunities, together
with a male Swallow Tanager in the same area. We stopped for some lunch and picked up a Half-
Pin-tailed Manakin by Erik Hirschfeld

collared Sparrow at the same spot. Shortly after lunch, Charles spotted a couple of Surucua Trogons
excavating a possible nest – great views!
We then took the 25-minute drive to Sumidouro,
where we managed to come across a local
festival and got caught up in a traffic jam for
almost an hour! Shortly afterwards, we arrived at
the Three-toed Jacamar site. Within minutes, we
had great views of two Three-toed Jacamars –
mission accomplished! We made our way back
to the minibus and drove back past the festival
and to our next stop, where we picked up
another Whistling Heron, Snowy Egret, Great
Egret and a distant Crested Black Tyrant.
We started our journey back to the lodge, back
through the town of Nova Friburgo, arriving at the lodge at around 17:00. A few of the group managed
to get a Versicolored Emerald on the feeders once back at the lodge. We met up again for the checklist
at 18:00, followed by dinner as usual at 18:30.
Monday, 9th
October:
Today we were to spend the day birding the lodge grounds. We spent the morning on the Blue Trail, a
circular trail of about 2.5 km that starts out the back of the lodge
and runs through some good quality forest at an altitude of
1,200m. It was a fairly slow morning, due to low cloud and cool
temperatures. We did, however, pick up a handful of new species,
and also improved on some views of other species we had already
seen earlier in the week. New species for this morning included
Fawn-breasted Tanager, Uniform Finch, Rufous-capped
Spinetail, Bertoni’s Antbird, Rough-legged Tyrannulet, Sharp-
billed Treehunter, Rufous-headed Tanager, Black-throated
Trogon and Grey-hooded Attila. As we made our way further up
the trail, a Mouse-colored Tapaculo was calling – these are
usually difficult to see at the best of times! We used some
playback, and slowly but surely this little grey blob of a bird
started to move around in front of us – not the easiest thing to
see, but at least the whole group managed to get onto it. We
continued around the trail, playing some Black-billed Scythebill
and eventually we got a response. After a little effort, we
managed to pull this bird in with some playback and eventually
the whole group saw it – such an amazing bird!
We were now nearing the end of the trail, and managed to get okay views of a Drab-breasted Bamboo
Tyrant – always a tricky little one, as it doesn’t respond that well to playback. We arrived back at the
lodge at around 12:00, so there was some time to watch the feeders and to do some hummingbird

photography. Lunch was served at 13:00, and we departed again at 14:30, as it was quite hot with not
much bird movement straight after lunch.
We set off towards the White Trail, as there
were potentially a handful of new species for
us. Although, having birded quite a lot at this
altitude already, we were left with the slightly
trickier species! We came across a small mixed
flock early on, which included White-collared
Foliage-gleaner, Buff-browed Foliage-gleaner
and White-browed Foliage-gleaner – 3 great
birds in a row! We continued up the White
Trail, and used playback to get good views of a
pair of Star-throated Antwrens. We got to our
usual spot for the Antthrushes and started to
play Cryptic and Rufous-tailed Antthrushes.
Both responded well but remained some distance away, so we continued on up the track and tried our
luck with a White-breasted Tapaculo. After about 10 minutes, this responded but refused to come any
closer.
It was now already becoming quite late in the afternoon, so we started heading back down towards the
main track. There was still a Cryptic Antthrush calling, so we dropped down onto the Green Trail and
walked along it a little, finally getting views of a Cryptic Antthrush. Unfortunately, not all of the group
got onto it. This was followed by a vocalising Rufous-capped Motmot that remained that way: just
vocalising!
We came to the end of the White Trail and headed back towards the junction, where the Long-trained
Nightjars can be found. We had to wait around 25 minutes for it to become dark. Just after 18:00, the
first Short-tailed Nighthawk flew in, responding well to whistles. Shortly afterwards, the Long-trained
Nightjar flew in and around, and provided great views once again. We then played some Tropical
Screech Owl, as one was calling down in the valley; unfortunately, this refused to come any closer. We
had exactly the same with Rusty-barred Owl,
it called a few times but refused to come in
any closer. At around 18:30, we started to
head back to the lodge. Dinner was served at
19:00, followed by the checklist.
Tuesday, 10th
October:
We awoke to another beautiful and clear
morning! Today we were off to bird the Cedae
Trail at an altitude of 550m, and then onto the
Theodoro Trail at 1,080m.
We arrived at the Cedae Trail shortly after
07:15, and were greeted by a lot of bird

activity almost immediately! First up, we had some good views of both Green-headed and Red-necked
Tanagers (such stunning birds), then a Sombre Hummingbird landed close by, followed by good views
of a White-eyed Foliage-gleaner, Orange-bellied Euphonia, and then a fantastic male Black-cheeked
Gnateater!
As we continued down the track, a raptor flew
overhead and luckily perched in a nearby
cecropia tree. We put the scope on it to reveal a
Rufous-thighed Kite. Further down, we had a
couple of Squirrel Cuckoos and finally caught
up with an Ochre-breasted Foliage-gleaner and a
couple of Spot-breasted Antvireos, this was
followed by a Streak-capped Antwren. At
around 11:00, we started to head back up the
track. By this stage, it was pretty warm and there
was not a great deal of bird activity. We did,
however, manage to get good views of a small
flock of Olive-green Tanagers – another Atlantic
Forest endemic.
We arrived back at the minibus at around 12:00 and took the short drive up to the Theodoro Trail,
where we had our picnic lunch. At around 13:00, we set off on the Theodoro Trail and soon had a
Black Hawk-Eagle calling overhead. We rushed down to an area that was more open and started to
scan; Erik picked up a raptor that turned out to be a very nice Mantled Hawk! Upon further scanning,
there were actually two of them – what a great start to this afternoon’s trail! Unfortunately, during the
excitement of the Mantled Hawks, we “lost” the Black Hawk-Eagle! Further down the track, Jennifer
spotted a Grey-hooded Flycatcher – another new bird for the trip; things were going well!
As we made our way further along the trail, we
came across a Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper
calling. After some playback, this performed
really well, giving the group some really good
views. Whilst watching the streamcreeper, there
was a very distant chipping noise: that of a Slaty
Bristlefront! We started to use playback, and
after a while it slowly started to come in and
gave good views for all but 2 members of the
group. Our next stop was to look for Sharpbill –
a somewhat tricky bird at the best of times.
Thankfully, it does have a favourite tree on this
trail and a quick glance into the tree produced…
a Streaked Xenops… not the bird we were looking for, but pretty nice all the same! We used some
playback for Sharpbill, and within 5 minutes or so we had one perched above us, giving pretty good
views of this peculiar bird!

Using playback for Saffron Toucanet further down the track, we managed to attract a pair of Spot-
billed Toucanets – still very nice to see these great birds again, but where were the Saffron
Toucanets?! Calling above us were some Eared Pygmy Tyrants – a tiny little bird that likes to sit high
in the canopy. We used some playback and scanned a lot without
any success, then Jennifer suddenly picked one up, sitting right in
front us just above head height – this great little bird showed well
for the whole group.
We started to head back towards the minibus, picking up Black-
goggled Tanagers on the way back, then we heard a Brazilian
Laniisoma calling. We used some playback, with the bird coming
in really close and continuing to call; however, unfortunately, as
hard as we searched, we could not find this bird – very
frustrating!
We arrived back at the minibus by 16:45, and arrived back at the
lodge just after 17:30. As usual, dinner was served at 18:30,
followed by the daily checklist.
Wednesday, 11th
October:
I can’t believe how fast the trip had gone. We were now on our
last full day, and took the 1.5-hour drive to the Regua wetlands
for a day’s birding in the lowlands. We arrived at 08:00, having
stopped for a Savanna Hawk, Roadside Hawk and Yellow-headed Caracara on the journey, and soon
got underway birding around the minibus: picking up Southern Lapwing and a rather nice Long-billed
Wren and Violaceous Euphonia. Next up, we found a Rufous-tailed Jacamar that showed well,
followed by a Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Common Tody-Flycatcher, some Black-bellied and White-
faced Whistling Ducks, our first Capybaras, followed by a stunning Brazilian Tanager. Next up were
some very responsive Silvery-flanked Antwrens,
Blond-crested Woodpecker, Greater Ani and
Unicolored Antwren. As we made our way
around the wetlands, we also picked up White-
headed Marsh Tyrant, Wattled Jacana, Muscovy
Duck and Brazilian Teal. Shortly after heading
into the main patch of lowland forest, we used
playback for a Sooretama Slaty Antshrike,
which showed pretty well, this was followed by
an Ochre-bellied Flycatcher.
Whilst waiting for a Scaled Antbird to come in,
there was a large flash of white into a nearby
tree. Glancing up, it was a White-necked Hawk – such amazing views; unfortunately, it only stayed
there for about 5 seconds, long enough to see it very well, but a pity it didn’t stay longer! We also used
playback in the same area to call in a Reddish Hermit, Channel-billed Toucan, Plain-winged
Woodcreeper, Red-eyed Vireo and White-bearded Manakin.

We stopped for our packed lunch at around 12:00, and then walked a little further on the Brown Trail to
try for Eye-ringed Tody-Tyrant. This little bird gave us a real run for our money, until Charles finally
spotted it right above us – another great Atlantic Forest endemic!
It was now 13:00, and I decided to start
heading back to the minibus to allow enough
time for a stop at the beginning of the Cedae
Trail, and Macae de Cima, to try and pick up
a few missing species. It was now pretty hot,
and there was not much activity, but we did
manage to pick up Flame-crested Tanager,
Yellow-backed Tanager, Chestnut-vented
Conebill, Purple Gallinule, Rufescent Tiger
Heron, Cocoi Heron and more good views of
Rufous-capped Motmot on the way back. We
arrived at the minibus at 14:00, and after
topping up with water and using the
bathrooms, we set off back up the mountain
and arrived at the Cedae Trail by 15:00. Unfortunately, despite using playback for a handful of species,
we didn’t get any responses – probably still too hot. We drove on up to the Macae de Cima Trail; and
again, it was terribly quiet – a bit frustrating, but not much we could do! We headed back to the lodge,
arriving at 17:30, and met up for dinner at 18:30, followed, as usual, by the daily checklist.
Thursday, 12th
October:
The group was departing from the lodge back to Rio at 09:30, so we had some free time in the morning
prior to this. Serginho arrived at 09:15 and the group departed promptly at 09:30.
We had a great week’s birding, and had been very well looked after by Rainer and Bettina at Itororo
Lodge.
