Alex Ford - CTEM Ltd
• Joined Charnwood Training in May 2010.• Background in graphic design and multimedia.• My goal is to introduce a blended e-learning
strategy to Charnwood Training.
Background
The Problem• In the hospitality sector there is a skills shortage.• Learners have long, unpredictable working hours
and struggle to find time for fixed study periods. • Learning is often given low priority.• Training sessions cancelled at short notice.• Our training currently involves much travel by
Training Officers.• This is costly and time consuming.
The Solution• Creating a range of Flash and video based
interactive learning materials.• These can be accessed either via the web or
memory stick for those with poor internet access.• This allows learners flexible access to training
materials, which they can fit around their busy schedules.
• Reduces journeys made by Training Officers.
Charnwood Induction Materials• The following slides show screenshots of parts
of our company introduction and health & safety packs….
Frequent use of review mechanisms, eg. hospitality themed drag and drop quiz test knowledge & engage learners
Health and Safety Pack, hazard spotting exercise…..dealing with statutory requirements in an engaging way….
Including quizzes with meaningful feedback breaks topics down into bite size pieces much more likely to be digested by learners
Repurposing learning materials• Once developed, it is relatively easy to use the
template to develop new learning materials• A recent example is an induction pack we
have created for Punch Taverns, based on the original Charnwood introduction
• Relatively small initial investment on software.• However you need skill, design and scripting
experience to use flash for creating interactive resources.
Costs and what’s involved
Company benefits
• Reduced petrol costs, by eliminating initial induction visit.
• Enhanced reputation for Charnwood Training as innovative learning providers.
• Increases the company’s reach.
• Once you have developed a template, it can easily be customized for other clients, as shown in the Punch Taverns example.
• This template has since attracted the interest of other commercial partners.
• Charnwood’s multimedia capability has helped attract new clients including Punch, Wetherspoons and Greene King.
• Each of these will generate new learners.
Commercial benefits
