THE FUTURE IS UPON US:
It is not overly complicated to predict the future if
you know what kind of future you want. We can
learn this simple truth from a farmer. Simply put, to a
farmer every future begins with the right seed. That
seed is then planted in the right soils. Then there is a
little bit of waiting (anticipation) before the harvest is
realized. No seed, no harvest! This simple principle
is true in our Christian spiritual walk. The Apostle
Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:7-8 (NRSV) that, “for
you reap whatever you sow.” NOTE: Apostle Paul
doesn’t say that “you reap what you didn’t sow.”
For all the love we need tomorrow, we ought to sow
seeds of love right where we are today. I am aware
that sometimes Ecclesiastical success often is judged
by all the wrong standards, which leads us to strive
for misrepresented goals. We can worry about
temporary prosperity symbols and seek them over
that which is eternal.
There are several seeds we as Prince of Peace family
can sow but one stands out for me, and it is the seed
of PRAYER. For the future that our country needs,
God calls us to search our hearts in humility and
repentance, beginning not in the White House but in
the church house. The Bible says, “If my people who
are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek
my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will
hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal
their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Let’s pray for our
direction of our nation and our Church family.
I want to invite you to take a few minutes each day to
pray for our nation and for Prince of Peace. Let’s
pray that the ultimate seed (Jesus Christ), through
whom all things in heaven and on earth were created,
things visible and invisible,— Colossians 1:15-20, will
build character within us and straighten us out where
we are crooked and out of sync with God.

CHURCH MAINTENANCE Wednesday, September 4—9:00 a.m.
Church Maintenance
We hope that some will show up and be with us
after the long holiday weekend. We’re still working
on hedges that are too low to the ground (think of
that big bush in the front of the church; it needs
serious trimming). Please, we ask
that you do not use any ROUNDUP
weed killer.
Come out, enjoy the sun we hope, and
have fun fellowship with other church
members. Coffee and snacks provided!
BLOODWORKS BLOOD DRIVE
It was unfortunate that August’s drive had to be
closed due to extremely high temperatures in the
Fellowship Hall despite having two portable A/C
units that BloodWorks provided and five fans that PoP
provided. BloodWorks staff reported that it got over
80 degrees which is the cutoff for when they have to
close down as the blood becomes compromised. The
drive WAS so busy for the first two hours. It probably
would have finished up very strongly had it stayed
open. How odd that within six months we’ve had to
cancel due to snow in February and heat in August,
climate change, perhaps? The first part of the drive
registered a total of 16 donors. Whole blood
registration was 15 with six deferred making a total of
nine pints collected. There was one platelet donation
that produced two platelet units. We know that the
heat is rare (as well as the snow) here in the Pacific

Northwest, so we hope for a more successful drive on
Monday, September 30. Blood donation takes about
an hour; platelet donation takes about two hours.
Coffee, juice, snacks provided.

October’s Banner newsletter for August meeting

A LASTING MEMORIAL
A gift to the Endowment Fund in a loved one’s
name, even a small gift, will
become part of the
principal, not to be spent. It
will join with other gifts
earning interest to continue
the work of our congregation
into the future. It will become
an ongoing memorial to that
loved one.

OFFICE HOLIDAY CLOSURE
The church office will be closed on Monday,
September 2, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
Lord on this Labor Day, we thank You for the blessing
of work. We ask for strength to complete each day; we
ask for rest when we are weary. We ask Your
guidance for everyone seeking employment, and we
ask that You be with those whose faces we might
never see but who work tirelessly each day for the
good of us all. Amen. We’ll be back in the office on
Tuesday, September 3.
DEHYDRATION
Dehydration is one of the most frequent causes of
hospitalization after age 65. Seniors also eat less,
which means they are getting fewer fluids from food.
Diabetes can upset the balance even further. If you
experience any signs listed below, go to the E.R. or
contact a doctor immediately:
Fatigue
Cramping
Dizziness
Confusion
Forgetfulness
Difficulty breathing
Dry mouth, nose, or skin
Notable increase in body
temperature
Elevated heart rate
Low blood pressure
These are just some of the signs to look for; there are
others. If you’re not sure, do this easy test: check by
pulling up the skin on the back of the hand for a few
seconds. If it does not return to normal almost
immediately, the person is dehydrated.
64 ounces of fluid is recommended daily for good
health. Here are some ways to drink enough liquids
during the day.
Always have water and other healthy drinks in
sight and within easy reach.
Drink sparkling water and vegetable juice.
Try flavored water.
Supply liquid nutritional supplements.
Consume foods that help with hydration, such as
broth-based soups, watermelon, apples, oranges,
cucumbers, green peppers, lettuce and tomatoes.
Choose healthy hydrating treats, popsicles,
The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner September 2019 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 5 Volume 28 Issue 9
frozen juice pops, Italian ices, or sorbets. They
will help you meet your water consumption
goals.
Take extra water with your medication
Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink
liquids. Dehydration starts before people feel
thirsty.
Remember water is vital to keep our bodies
functioning properly. We lose about 68 ounces of
water daily and this water must be replaced to
prevent dehydration.

WOMEN OF PRINCE OF PEACE What do you think of when
you hear the word
“stewardship?” If you’re like
me, probably the first thing
that pops into your head is
“time, talent, treasure,” or
“oh no - we’re going to hear about money (or GOOD -
we’re going to hear about $$).” Well...this Fall there
will be a different “take” on the word. We will be
looking at emotional stewardship...finding a way to
sort and make sense of all that we feel. Gather explains
it this way: “This September, October and November,
we will study selections of Old Testament poetry from
Job, Psalms, Lamentations, and Song of Solomon.
Drawing from the experiences of these ancient writers,
we will learn to look for God for help in stewarding
our deep emotions, finding hope and grace along the
way.” Gather is FULL of inspiration.
The September study entitled No Hard Feelings? The
Angst of Anger uses the Psalms. It moves from anger
and uncertainty to praise and renewed relationship
with God. Join a group of women that will take this
walk through the study. You have a choice of an
evening meeting or a morning meeting. Joy Circle
meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, in the
church library. Faith Circle meets at 10:00 a.m. on
Thursday, September 19, in the church library.
Some of the women who attended the Esther Study
this summer celebrated the
“Feast of Purim” by
enjoying Hamantaschen
cookies (pictured).
The LOVE
PROJECT for
September is the
collection of school
supplies. Many of
the students in the Highline School District have a
challenging time gathering their needed supplies.
Often teachers spend their own money to help out.
This will continue for sure, but gathering these items
will give us the opportunity to help a bit. To give you
an idea, we chose six things to focus on: #2 pencils,
glue sticks, 24 count crayons, eight-count washable
markers (wide), notebook paper, and/or composition
books. However, if you see a sale on something that is
not on the list, feel free to donate that as well.
If you like to think ahead, the LOVE PROJECT for
October will be men’s white crew socks for the Peace
Shelter.
**We received a thank you note from Compass
Housing Alliance. Mel Schneider and Gail Kelly
delivered bags of bath towels and toiletries that were
gathered for the Church of Steadfast Love. Thank you
to the congregation for participating in the gathering
of these items.
QUILTERS need quilt tops. Do you feel like sewing
some beautiful fabric pieces together? This can be
done at church on Thursday mornings or at home.
Size?? 60x80 inches. Fabric is available! Quilts will
be shipped the first week of November. Sewing
machines need to hum before then! (Smile.)
Speaking of thinking ahead...there are TWO
conventions in the future:
1. The Southwestern Washington (1C) SWO will be
hosting their annual convention at Christ
Lutheran Church in Lakewood, WA, on
October 12 (8211 112th St SW, Lakewood). The
title ”FEAR NOT for I am with you” sounds like a

great study in these times (or any time). More
information and registration forms are on the
WELCA bulletin board. It is more economical to
sign up before October 1.
2. Phoenix will be the host city for the Triennial
Convention July 14-16, 2020. That city is
relatively close and it sure would be fun to have a
group of women attend. We had such a great time
in Spokane...how many years ago??
SAVE THE DATE!
Lutheran Community Services Northwest is having
its Annual Fundraising Luncheon on Sunday,
October 13, at the Lynnwood Convention Center.
Denis Short, and Julie and Art Landskov will be able
to give you more details. We would love to have you
join us there. More information is on the bulletin
board across from the church office. The work of LCS
includes finding loving homes for foster children,
assisting people struggling with homelessness,
meeting the basic needs of and welcoming refugees.
They also run a medical clinic and daycare center in
their facility on S 188th St. “Healing doesn’t happen in
isolation; it happens in community.” You can RSVP to
Denis or the Landskovs, and they will take care of the
rest. Thank you!
HOSPITALITY HOUSE EVENING
MEALS
Tuesday September 10 through Sunday,
September 15. The residents of the women’s shelter
are smacking their lips. They love the meals that PoP
prepares for them and it’s our turn again! The meal
provider list is on the House’s bulletin board! Need a
meal idea? Fish has been requested. Questions? See

REMEMBERING…
HAZEL “LEA”
HICKMAN
Lea Hickman was born in
Seattle, Washington on
March 9, 1943. She was
reunited with her husband,
Bill Hickman and her son,
Mike Hickman, on Sunday,
August 11, 2019.
Lea was a teacher for many years. She taught Art,
French and before retirement in 2005 was teaching
English Language Learners (ELL) to elementary
students at Seahurst Elementary in Burien. Her love
of children and sharing of knowledge made her many
years of teaching a joy. Lea and Bill led an amazingly
full life. They were active members of numerous
boating clubs in the Puget Sound area. They were
out on their boat almost every weekend, visiting their
favorite spots around Puget Sound like Blake Island,
Gig Harbor and Poulsbo. Every summer they went
up to Desolation Sound in BC, Canada to visit their
favorite spots like Roscoe Bay, Squirrel Cove and
The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner September 2019 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 8 Volume 28 Issue 9
Rebecca Spit. They even took their boat as far as
Glacier Bay, Alaska.
Lea loved to read non-fiction nautical books and had
an immense collection of everything she read. She
loved to laugh; the Carol Burnett show was one of her
favorites. She loved music and attended concerts with
her daughter to see favorites of hers such as the Beach
Boys and the Steve Miller Band. She was a devout
member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for over
30 years. Lea was able to speak both French and
Norwegian. She played the piano and accordion. She
was an artist and was able to sketch anything. She
drew the covers of many a cruising cookbook and
even designed an anniversary burgee for a local yacht
club.
Lea was predeceased by her loving husband of 38
years, Bill Hickman, her son, Mike Hickman, and her
sister, Vicki Rude. Lea is survived by her daughter,
Karen Sargin and Karen’s husband, San, and one
granddaughter, Elisabeth Sargin. In addition, she is
also survived by her niece, Kristin Boyd and Kristin’s
husband Rafael, and her nephew Ricke Tucker; as
well as many cousins both in Norway and in the USA.
PEACE SHELTER BEGINS AGAIN
As October draws near, we begin preparations for
Peace Shelter men to gather here on Sunday nights
for a safe and comfortable place to sleep out of the
cold. Posted on the Peace Shelter bulletin board is a
sign up sheet for provisions that are needed for that
time right next to a grocery list of suggested items.
Please consider signing up for providing a meal for
the gentlemen who sleep here so we can get those
slots filled early! Thanks to all who sign up; this is a
special ministry headed up by Arnie Walter. He
takes really good care of these men one night a week
and we thank him so much!
FROM THE BISHOP THE SPIRIT - SEPTEMBER 2019 On August 3, as I prepared to fly
to Milwaukee for the 2019
ELCA Church-wide Assembly, I
looked out the airplane window
at Mt. Rainier and thought,
“Wow! Is there anything more spectacular?” And, I
admit, I also thought, “I have so much work to do
right here in the synod, why do I have to leave for a
week?”
On August 12, as I prepared to leave Milwaukee to
return home, I looked out the airplane window at
Lake Michigan and thought, “Wow! I am both so
proud of our church and also so aware of how much
further we have to go!”
I hope that you were able to follow the Assembly in
real time by watching the livestream. But even if you
weren’t able to follow the assembly in real time, I
encourage you to read about the people elected, the
motions that were passed, experience the worship,
and hopefully, enter into the joy that happens when
we are church together (which was the theme for this
year). It truly was a blessing to be with over 1,000
Lutherans as we did good and hard work this past
week.
In the coming months I will reflect more on some of
the motions and actions that happened at the Church-
wide Assembly. But here are a few thoughts as I
return home. We are connected to a deep and broad
community throughout the United States. We are
people of different ethnicities, cultures, colors,
sexualities, and genders. We are young and old. We
are from blue and red states. We are people who are
The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner September 2019 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 9 Volume 28 Issue 9
Lutherans from birth and we are people who
embraced the Lutheran lens of Christianity later in
life.
We are a people who are listening to God’s call to
embrace all people, even when it is difficult or
uncomfortable. We are a people who ask forgiveness
when we mess up and we are a people of grace. We
are a people who march against unjust laws and we
are a people who sing of that promised day when all
will be made right. We are a people who ask many
questions and we are a people who reflect on words
spoken. We are a people who try (as best we can) to
follow Robert’s Rules of Order and we are a people
who laugh when no one can figure out the rabbit hole
we have gone down as we attempt Robert’s Rules of
Order. We are a people who sing old and well-known
hymns with gusto and we are a people who embrace
new words and new melodies in this new day.
In short, we are people of God. We don’t always get
it right. We don’t always agree. But God’s Spirit was
present and active in Milwaukee just as God’s Spirit is
present and active in your congregation, in the
Northwest Washington Synod, and in the wider
ELCA. I am confident and excited about what is next
for us and for the entire ELCA.
As we heard throughout the assembly, Together we are
Church.
If you would like to know more about the actions
taken by the 2019 Church-wide Assembly, you can

Events/8003
Grace & Peace,
Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee

GOSPEL FOR SEPTEMBER
September 1—Luke 14:1, 7-14
Jesus observes guests jockeying for position at the table. He
uses the opportunity to teach his hearers to choose humility
rather than self exaltation. Jesus also makes an appeal for his
hosts to mimic God’s gracious hospitality to the poor and the
broken.
September 8—Luke 14:25-33
Jesus speaks frankly about the fearsome costs of discipleship.
Those who follow him should know from the outset that
completing the course of discipleship will finally mean
renouncing all other allegiances.
September 15—Luke 15:1-10
Jesus tells two stories that suggest a curious connection between
the lost being found and sinners repenting. God takes the
initiative to find sinners, each of whom is so precious to God that
his or her recovery brings joy in heaven.
September 22—Luke 15:1-13
Jesus tells the curious story of a dishonest man who cheats his
employer and then is commended by him for having acted so
shrewdly. Jesus wonders why his own followers are less creative
and diligent in the stewardship given that they are managers of a
fare more valuable household.
September 29—Luke 16:19-31
Jesus tells a parable in which the poor one is “lifted up” and the
rich one is “sent away empty.” Jesus makes it clear that this
ethic of merciful reversal is not new but is as old as Moses and
the prophets.
