“Myrtha and the Wilis”, Waltz from Act 2 Giselle“Myrtha and the Wilis”, Waltz from Act 2 Giselle
Original music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, famously restaged by M. Petipa in the late 19th Century. Set in Germany in the Middle Ages, "Giselle" describes a young woman's experience with love and loss. Written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier, the authors took their inspiration for the plot from a passage in "De l'Allemagne" by Heinrich Heine, and from a poem called "Fantômes" by Victor Hugo. We step into the story at the commencement of Act 2; Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, prepares to summon Giselle's spirit from the grave. The Wilis--a group of supernatural female spirits--seek vengeance on men for their early, loveless deaths. Deep in the night, Myrtha leads her Wilis in dramatic patterns and synchronized movement; their stoic beauty masks intended deceit.

Note from the Director
Greetings ballet families, friends, and fans--we are thrilled to present our Winter production. In keeping with last year's "ballet blanc" theme (Kingdom of the Shades from La Bayadere), Bethany Ballet presents two more white ballet waltzes: Myrtha and the Wilis and Waltz of the Snowflakes. Our work this season focuses on building a strong corps de ballet--learning how to move and think together--and keen musicality. Students are challenged with various styles of classical choreography and musical composition; shifting formations and time signatures demand complete presence in mind and body. Bethany Ballet dancers continue to demonstrate excellence in the rehearsal studio: exemplary etiquette, excellent attendance, and eagerness to grow create a wonderful experience.
Cate Greyjoy, Artistic Director Spring takes us to new enchanted realms: dancers will encounter blends of traditional and contemporary choreography alongside classical and operatic compositions. We will further hone our corps de ballet skills and introduce multiple opportunities for leading roles.
My greatest thanks to all.
