Definiton Audio-lingualism is a method of foreign

language teaching where the emphasis is on learning grammatical and phonological structure, especially for speaking and listening. It is based on behaviourism.

StructuralismLinguistic signs were composed of two parts, a signifier (thesound pattern of a word) and a signified (the concept or meaning of the

word).

BehaviorismBehaviorism is a philosophy of psychology

based on the proposition that all things which organisms do, including acting, thinking and feeling can and should be

regarded as behaviors.

Audiolingual methodThe objective of the audiolingual method is accurate pronunciation and grammar, the ability to respond quickly and accurately in

speech situations and knowledge of sufficient vocabulary to use with grammar patterns.

Some characteristics of the method

• language learning is habit-formation,• mistakes are bad and should be avoided• language skills are learned more

effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form.

Activities-Note• The main activities include reading aloud

dialogues, repetitions of model sentences, and drilling. Key structures from the dialogue serve as the basis for pattern drills of different kinds.

• Not only are the students expected to produce the correct output, but attention is also paid to correct pronunciation.

Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP)

• The PPP method could be characterized as a common-sense approach to teaching as it consists of 3 stages that most people who have learnt how to do anything will be familiar with.

• The first stage is the presentation of an aspect of language in a context that students are familiar with.

• The second stage is practice, where students will be given an activity that gives them plenty of opportunities to practice the new aspect of language and become familiar with it whilst receiving limited and appropriate assistance from the teacher.

• The final stage is production where the students will use the language in context, in an activity set up by the teacher who will be giving minimal assistance
