Alvernia combines the personal touch and attention of a small private
college with many of the opportunities of an outstanding university. It’s
the best of both worlds! As a student, you’ll benefit from our liberal arts
foundation that offers a well-rounded education to help you develop
your own opinions, attitudes and beliefs. You’ll also receive first-rate
professional preparation to provide you with the skills and knowledge
you’ll need for career success after graduation.
If you are like most of our students, you’ll appreciate the small class
sizes and breadth of our academic programs all taught by faculty who
are experts in their fields and equally committed to your success.
Alvernia is a great value among private universities, and we work hard
to keep our costs affordable for families. In fact, when compared
to other leading private colleges, you’ll find our tuition cost is less
than the national average. We also offer generous scholarships and
financial aid to help you realize your college dreams.
As one of only 22 Franciscan institutions in the United States, we promote
a values-based learning philosophy guided by the ideal of “knowledge
joined with love” that shapes our educational philosophy and strong
campus community. Our emphasis on developing ethical leaders with
moral courage is blended with a commitment to service in a campus
environment that provides our students the ideal setting to grow and develop.
WhyAlvernia?
Employers often tell us that they look to Alvernia first when they’re hiring because they know that with an Alvernia graduate, they’re hiring someone with high ethical standards.Dr. Thomas F. Flynn, Alvernia University President

Alvernia offers a range of academic programs with
a learning approach grounded in the real world.
As a student you will have access to more than 50
majors and minors in nearly every field to prepare
you for your career of choice.
With a foundation in the liberal arts tradition, our
curriculum and instruction will help develop your
critical thinking skills and encourage you to explore
your own ideas. It’s an approach that produces
well-rounded individuals who are ready to succeed
no matter what path they choose. For students
who seek greater intellectual challenges, our honors
program is ideal. It’s designed to encourage
academic excellence and facilitate the exchange
of ideas between students with different interests
and in different disciplines.
We want every student to reach their full potential
and we offer resources to do just that. The Learning
Center is available to students who would like assis-
tance in most courses, with peer and professional
tutors available to help students build skills in writing,
math, science and foreign languages.
Learning at Alvernia comes to life through hands-on

Preparing you for a successful career and a rewarding future
is a priority at Alvernia. You’ll learn about life and develop as
a person. But equally important, you’ll get the training and
knowledge needed to land that first job after graduation.
Our graduates go on to work at many top organizations,
including Boeing, Calvin Klein, Disney, Coca-Cola, ESPN,
GlaxoSmithKline, Hewlett-Packard and the FBI, to name just
a few. Others choose to attend graduate school at places
such as the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon,
Seton Hall, Lehigh, Villanova, Temple and Ohio State.
To support our students’ academic success, we have
recently invested in a number of multimillion-dollar
additions to our campus, including:
A laser laboratory supporting our science programs
A state-of-the-art learning suite for our criminal justice
and counseling programs
A theater and recital hall
An Educational Technology Center and media suite
An art gallery, music studios and rehearsal spaces
An expanded Library Learning Commons equipped
with the latest technology and resource options
These are only the most recent features of the renaissance
occurring on our campus. It really is an exciting time to be
at Alvernia!

Alvernia isn’t like everywhere or anywhere else. Our Catholic heritage
guides us to foster ethical leadership and service to others while
promoting civic engagement as a lifelong pursuit in every career and
life path. Our Franciscan mission influences all that we do, from our
curriculum and culture to what we teach and how we teach it. This
creates a learning environment that encourages students to follow their
individual gifts to transform themselves and the world around them.
Alvernia’s unique learning environment is abundant with opportunities
for students of all backgrounds to enrich their ethical, moral and
spiritual development. Many students are active in Campus Ministry
and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, which provide opportunities to
engage in a community of faith, pursue a life of service and advance
peace and social justice initiatives. Others enjoy involvement with
Alvernia’s nationally recognized Holleran Center for Community
Engagement and the O’Pake Institute for Ethics, Leadership & Public
Service. The university also offers a rich liturgical life for all interested
students, who are welcomed to Mass on Sunday and during the week.

expose you to environmental, cultural and social justice issues as well as a
variety of programs and activities.
Our service trips are popular with students who want to combine their
desire to help those in need with an interest in exploring cultures different
from their own. Recent trips have included travel to Ecuador, the Dominican
Republic, New Orleans and Appalachia.
Caring for each other, our planet and our community come together with
