• SPEAR is a culmination of flight and dispatch technologies to improve fuel or time efficiency for a flight, workload and reduce operational costs.
• SMART are flight trials to identify the feasibility, procedures, and operational requirements to enable in-flight reroute opportunities.
• PARC (Performance and Route Communications) technology to directly uplinks efficiency advisories, flight plans, weather, takeoff information to FMC and mobile device.
• EWIS (Environmental Waypoint Insertion System) is a technology that identifies inefficiencies in the flight plan due to weather using real-time and forecast weather.
• RASS (Real-time Adaptive Speed Scheduler) improves flight efficiency related to flight schedules, connecting passengers, costs, and airline and pilot preferences. RASS calculates a dynamic speed schedule to regain time and fuel efficiency.

Why EWIS?
• Currently, weather along a flight plan is identified and evaluated at known flight plan waypoints. The flight plan waypoints are generally defined for purposes of navigation or communication.
• Flight plan tools only evaluate weather along a flight path and not a flight trajectory (offsets, pseudo waypoints).
• In between flight plan waypoints, weather is accounted for using linear interpolation of the entered winds and temperatures at the waypoint.
• What happens when the 2 flight plan waypoints are great distances apart?
• What happens when weather doesn’t follow linear interpolation?
• What happens when there is a thunderstorm, or other significant weather in between any 2 flight plan waypoints?

These are inefficiencies for both flight planning tools and FMCs.
