A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the researchinventory:
To complete this research inventory we calculated the number of faculty who areactively pursuing and conducting research, have submitted research proposals, or havebeen awarded grants relating to sustainability.
A brief description of notable accomplishments during the previous three years by facultyand/or staff engaged in sustainability research:
Notable achievements include: 1. Grant awards from the California State Department ofFish and Game and the California State Water Resources Control Board to monitor theenvironmental health of California's streams, rivers, lakes and coastal areas. Theresearch team on the program, known as SWAMP (Surface Water Ambient MonitoringProgram), collects and analyzes scientific data on water from around the state. Theyexamine water quality chemistry and measure toxicity. That data is then compiled, analyzed and integrated into comprehensive reports and web sites that serve asresources and repositories for the entire State of California. The program is led by RustyFairey, Director of the Marine Pollution Studies Laboratory at SJSU's Moss LandingMarine Laboratories. 2. In a highly technical convergence of material formulation, digitalmodeling and 3-D printing, Professor Virginia San Fratello - a licensed, practicingarchitect and SJSU faculty member - and her students are designing sustainable, customizable and inexpensive building components made entirely from recycleddemolition debris and carpentry waste. Funded by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency, they have constructed rigid window coverings that mediate the interiorclimate, reducing the need for air conditioning and heating. Using an open-weave ivy-leaf pattern, they have generated mass customized designs that increase winterinterior temperatures by an average of 12 degrees and decrease summer interiortemperatures by an average of 9 degrees. 3. The Spartan Superway is a modelautomated transit network (ATN), a system where fully automated vehicles operate ona grade-separated track, one that is elevated about 20 to 30 feet above existing

roadways. Under the guidance of Mechanical Engineering Professor Burford Thurman, adesign team of SJSU students from engineering, industrial design, urban planning, andbusiness have constructed a short but full-size model of the track as well as developinga cabin design. While no market for the ATN yet exists, it appears to have futurepotential as a mode of sustainable transportation given that a solar power collectionsystem can be integrated into its design.
