WearepleasedtoannouncethatthreemembersTOTHEAAFhavebeenelectedtotheBoardofDirectorswithaparticipationrateofmorethan75%.Thefollowingmemberswillserveontheboardforaperiodof3years,startingJanuary1,2017:MouniaChaib,AliFeliachi,andGhaniaAit-Ghezali.Thenewmemberswillreplacethreeofthecurrentboardmembers,namelyHimedKherbache,BelgacemHabaandSamBeddarwhosetermsendonDecember31,2016.WearegratefultoHimed,BelkacemandSamfortheirserviceandwelcometheircontinuedcontributiontotheAAF.ThenewboardwillconveneinJanuarytoelectnewofficersandplantheFoundation'sactivityfor2017.

InanefforttofostermutualeducationalandculturalexchangebetweenthepeopleoftheUnitedStatesandAlgeria,AAF-CESTdevelopedaninternationalexchangeprogramtofacilitateeducationalvisitsstudentsandAlgerianprofessionalstotheUnitedStatesandhelpbothpartiescultivaterelationshipsthatsupporteducationalenrichmentinareasof

sharedinterests.Theinternationalexchangeprogramincludestwodifferentcategories:Observership:Thisprogramconsistsinobservingpatientcareinahealthcaresetting,forthespecificpurposeofgainingprofessionalskills,learningnewtreatmentapproaches,gainingknowledge,andbeingexposedseveralmedicalpracticeattitudes.An

KhalilBendibKhalilmovedtotheUSasaforeignstudentattheageof20.HeholdsaMaster’sdegreeinEastAsiaLanguagesandCulturesobtainedinLosAngeles.From1987to1995KhalilworkedaseditorialcartoonistwiththeGannettnewspapersattheirCaliforniaflagshipnewspaper,theSanBernardinoSun,wherehespentthefollowingeightyearsandwonnumerousawardsforhiswork.Khalilisalsoaprolificsculptor.Amonghispublicsculpturesareamonumentrememberingthe1948DeirYassinemassacreinPalestineattheSmithCollegesinNewYorkandanotheroneinMinneapolis.Khalilhasreceivedasteadystreamofcommissionsfromnon-profitorganizationssuchasOxfam,GreenPeace,GlobalExchange,theCaliforniaFacultyAssociation,CodePinkandtheUFW.In2016,hereceivedtheprestigiousAronsonawardforpoliticalcartooningatNewYork’sHunterCollege.Khalilhaspublishedseveralcollectionsofhiscartoons,whichhavegracedhepagesofmajornewspaperssuchastheNewYorkTimes,LATimesandUSAToday.In2011,heco-authoredagraphicnoveltitledZahra’sParadise,aboutthe2009GreenRevolutioninTehran,whichbecameaNewYorkTimesbestsellerandhasbeentranslatedinsixteenlanguagestodate.OriginalpagesfromthisgraphicnovelarenowpartoftheLibraryofCongress’permanentcollection.Since2002,KhalilBendibhasalsobeentheco-producerandco-hostofPacificaradio’sVoicesoftheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica,aweeklyshowthatairsonanumberofPacificaradiostationsandaffiliates..Agalleryofhiscartoonsandotherpoliticalartworkcanbeviewedatwww.bendib.com.

ObservershipProgramismeanttobevoluntaryforinterestedphysiciansfromAlgeriaandvolunteerU.Sphysicianpreceptors.ThisyearwehadtheopportunitytoorganizethevisitoftwosurgeonsfromAlgeriatotheUSfora6weeksobeservership.WealsoarrangedforamedicaldoctorfromAlgeriawhoiscurrentlyintheUSforanObserveshipof3monthsinanIvyLeagueinstitution.Visitor:ThisprogramconsistsinhavingstudentsorprofessionalsfromAlgerianinstitutionsvisitandspendtimewithinaUSinstitutionintheirrespectivefieldsinordertogainfurtherknowledge,learnnewtechniquesorapproaches,orcomplementsomeoftheworktheyhavebeendoinginAlgeria.ThemembersofAAFincollaborationwiththeircurrentnetworkofprofessionalsintheUS,havebeenabletosecuremultiplevisitationopportunitiesinseveralinstitutions.TwomasterdegreelevelstudentsarescheduledtostarttheircancerbiologyvisitationinFebruary2017.In2016wehavebeenabletooffervisitationto2students.Bothstudentscompletedtheirinternshipsuccessfullyandalltheirobjectivesweremet.StudentW.H.said“thisopportunityallowedmetobeexposedtostateoftheartcuttingedgescienceinaveryshortamountoftime.Iwillneverforgetthisexperience”.

TheinternationalexchangecommitteegeneratedtheguidelinesfortheInternationalexchangeprogramtoprovideallcandidateswithrelevantrecommendationandadvices.TheObservershipProgramisincollaborationwiththeMaghreb-AmericanHealthFoundation(MAHF,Inc.)andtheAlgerianAmericanScientistsAssociation(AASA).ThevisitationprogramisincollaborationwithAASA.

August22,2016TheAmericanInternationalSchoolAlgierswasofficiallyinauguratedonAugust22,2016.TheopeningfollowsthesigningofanagreementtocreateanAmericanschoolinAlgiersbyAssistantSecretaryforNearEasternAffairsattheU.S.DepartmentofState,AnnePatterson,andAlgerianAmbassadortotheUnitedStates,MadjidBouguerra,inWashington,DConDecember29,2015.December110,2016/AlgerianPressService/TheAlgerian-AmericaForumonEnergywasheld14-15DecemberinHouston(Texas).Theforumaimstoboostthepartnershipsandinvestmentsbetweenthetwocountriesintheoilandenergysectors.February16,2017/The2017U.S.EmbassyAlgiersEntrepreneurshipBootCamp.TheBootCampisanintensive8-weekcoursedesignedtoprovidepre-launchandearly-stageentrepreneurswithastrongfoundationforbusinessplanning,launchandstartupoperation.GuidedbyanexpertsmallbusinessfacilitatorfromtheUnitedStates,participantswillworkindividuallyandinteamstodeveloptheirprivateenterpriseorsocialenterprise/NGOconcepts.ThedeadlineforapplicationisFebruary16,2017.
