Water in Lithuanian Traditions
Water is the beginning of everything.
In Lithuanian folk songs water is mentioned more often than fire.
Sacred places
they were by the water and all the rituals were started by drinking water.
Ritual bathing
was started in open waters during spring festivals and was finished in midsummer.
Water was considered to have special features before dawn.
Sprinkling with Water
This ritual helped to awaken vital capacity of nature.
Wreathe twining
By floating wreathes young girls used to tell their future.
Almost every folk song and story includes words connected with water: rivers, springs, seas, lagoon.
