DIPLOMAT, EDUCATOR, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, MAYOR, U.S. REPRESENTATIVE, PASTORAmbassador Young’s impact is renowned on a global scale, from his political positions at the federal and international level to his role in the Civil Rights Movement. It was during his tenure as Mayor of Atlanta from 1982 to1990 in which he invigorated the partnership between the public and private sector that remains a cornerstone of Atlanta today.
During that time, Central Atlanta Progress President Dan Sweat commended Young on his efforts to foster a relationship with the business community, as well as his determined goal to make Atlanta a new focal point of international commerce and activity.
Take a walk through Downtown today and you can’t miss the signs of Andrew Young’s legacy. Most notably perhaps is Centennial Olympic Park, which “put Atlanta on the map,” and serves as a powerful economic impact engine for the entire City.
RETIRED POLICE CHIEF, ATLANTA POLICE DEPARTMENTChief Turner’s connections to Atlanta run deep. Born at Grady Hospital, raised in Perry Homes, educated in Atlanta Public Schools and at Clark Atlanta and a 35-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, he is truly a local success story.
He worked his way up the ladder, serving as former Mayor Andrew Young’s driver on a security detail, overseeing APD’s human resources department, leading the recruitment unit and commanding the Zone 1 precinct in northwest Atlanta. Chief Turner’s leadership was highlighted by increased collaboration with community stakeholders - including other police departments, city officials, property owners, and leaders of churches, schools, and communities. During Turner’s tenure as Police Chief from 2010 to 2016, crime in Downtown dropped substantially. In fact, part one crime decreased by an impressive twenty percent (20%) – in 2016 alone. He understands his home town and has a tremendous sense of local pride. Turner reflected the best of Atlanta in his leadership as Police Chief.
