President’s Report
Awareness
One of our ongoing priorities for MSOT over the
past few years has been the redevelopment of
our strategic plan. Last fall we surveyed
membership for input and feedback regarding
our updated strategy. We are excited to share
our strategic priorities which will carry MSOT
forward until 2020.
A communication and marketing strategy to engage membership
Building links and advancing advocacy efforts
Development of a rural and northern OT strategy
Roll out of a “new OT” strategy Furthering evidence informed practice in
the province MSOT continues to have a large presence on social media including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Be sure to engage with us through these channels!
Advocacy
Engaging in our communities through our Team
OT initiative has continued to be a priority for
MSOT over the past year. MSOT participated in
eight Team OT events this year and we look
forward to strengthening our presence in the
community this coming year. Be sure to let us
know if you are participating in any Team OT
events.
MSOT launched our Advocacy Toolkit this
spring. The kit includes letter templates that
members can use to advocate to local govern-
ment and employers for various advocacy issues
impacting occupational therapists. We hope
that you take advantage of this great resource
developed by our board and let us know what
advocacy activities you get involved with!
Professional Development &
Networking
Providing our members with opportunities to
engage in professional development and to
facilitate valuable networking opportunities
continues to be a priority for MSOT. Over the
2015-2016 year, MSOT has engaged in a number
of activities consistent with this priority.
MSOT partnered with the Master of
Occupational Therapy students at the College of
Rehabilitation Sciences this past fall for OT
Month celebrations, lecture series, Open House,
and Job Fair.
O ver the past year, the Manitoba
Society of Occupational Therapists
(MSOT) has worked with our
members and our communities to advocate for
the profession of occupational therapy within
Manitoba. Consistent with our mission and
vision, MSOT has worked to increase public
awareness of occupational therapy, advocate
for our members and the profession, and
facilitate professional development and net-
working opportunities. Here are some of our
key activities and accomplishments over the
2015 - 2016 year:
4 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
May 18, 2016 was MSOT’s OT Celebration
Night. As this year’s OT Celebration Night, we
presented numerous awards to members of
our OT community. Please see our website
for a list of the award winners.
MSOT was very excited to see a growing
number of OTs from across all sectors of
practice at this evening. We also welcomed
the class of 2016 into the occupational
therapy profession. Thank you to the generos-
ity of our sponsors for their support in making
this evening a success!
This year we re-connected with the MSOT
Private Practice Group initiatives. We have
participated in a few meetings and look
forward to continuing our networking in the
next year.
We also continued to engage with the
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA)
OT Leadership Group, Master of Occupational
Therapy Program Committee, and the Alliance
of Canadian Occupational Therapy
Professional Associations.
All the achievements that MSOT has
recognized in the past year would not have
been possible without our wonderful, talent-
ed, and dedicated Board of Directors,
administrative professionals, and of course
without the support of our members. Thank
you for being MSOT members and allowing us
to do the work with love in advocating for the
profession within our province. Please
continue to engage with us in the coming
year, as we strive to meet the needs of our
members, and of our profession.
Respectfully submitted,
Alana Maertins, O.T. Reg. (MB)
MSOT President
5 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
MSOT Coordinators & Committee Reports
Coordinator of Communications
M SOT continues striving to connect occupational therapists across the province in an effort to strength, inform and advocate for our profession. In 2015-2016 the communications team:
Continued to learn and expand the use of the new MSOT website. This includes operationally launching the member’s only portal that offer member exclusive resources; and beginning discussions to delineate content filtering for members and non-members.
Continued the process of updating and standardizing our brand by updating select literature items. This year drafts for the updated “Understanding OT” and “Membership Benefits” were completed.
Published an online survey filled out by many of our stakeholders regarding the increases in membership fees. This data was analyzed by our board of directors and results communicated to the College of Occupational Therapists for review and consideration.
Discussions towards developing an opera-tional advertisement policy continue in an effort to provide unbiased and transparent communication of third-party information (e.g. services, products, professional development, research studies) in a way that is in line with MSOT’s mission, enrich-es MSOT member’s experience, and digital boundaries.
Utilization of Hootesuite by multiple team members in order to streamline and facilitate maintenance of digital outlets (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) by our volunteer content curators.
Continues to expand our digital presence, as noted with our Twitter profile growing from 547 to 614 followers, and Facebook profile growing from 428 to 474 followers. There has also been a positive trend of more posts having a better “reach”, as measured with shares and views of posts. This suggests that content published digitally is of relevance and of interest to our audience.
With a heavy heart, I will be concluding a two-year term as Coordinator of Communications. I extend my sincerest thank you to the communi-cations team, our board of directors, and our OT community for allowing me to be part of this rewarding journey. I celebrate MSOT’s dedication towards excellence in marketing and communications. It is a never ending quest to stay with and ahead of current trends that requires vision, resources and commitment. I am confident MSOT will continue the tradition of making strides connecting current and future occupational therapists, increasing the public profile of occupational therapy in Manitoba, and advocating for our profession. Respectfully, Juan Monterrosa, O.T. Reg. (MB) MSOT Coordinator of Communications
6 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
A
t the end of the 2015-2016 fiscal year, there were 282 members
registered with MSOT. This number represents 37% of individuals registered with COTM. Numbers as of May, 2016 are as follows:
Full Members: 273 Out of Province: 3 Life Members: 2 Retired Members: 4 Total: 282
These numbers demonstrate a decrease in the
total number of memberships from last year
(- 15 members). MSOT has been experiencing a
constant decline in membership percentages
over the last several years, which is consistent
with many provincial occupational therapy
associations across Canada. As COTM member-
ship fees continue to increase over time, it is
predictive that MSOT membership numbers will
continue to decrease due to increased cost
requirements. Therefore, as an organization we
would like to thank our members for their
commitment to MSOT over the last year, but
also realize our need to continue to increase our
visibility and accessibility to attract new
members.
For these reasons, I assisted in addressing issues
that arose over the 2015-2016 year. As the
Coordinator of Member Services, I assisted in
improving access for both new and existing
members regarding the members-only portal of
the website. This was done to help enhance
MSOT membership satisfaction and optimize
MSOT member benefits. I also became actively
involved in prepping and volunteering for the
annual OT Celebration Night, and continued to
support our renewal incentives and strong
presence at the College of Rehabilitation
Sciences Open House.
Additionally, in the 2015-2016 fiscal year, I
continued to attend monthly Board of Directors
meetings, and OT Celebration Night preparation
meetings. I was also involved in organizing an
education session regarding MSOT membership
and benefits for the new graduates of the
Masters of Occupational Therapy Program
students. The education session also helped to
promote MSOT and provide new graduates with
information to make an informed decision
regarding membership. Finally, I worked with
other MSOT board members to ensure timely
completion of specific coordinator tasks and was
available to address member, non-member, and
board queries. Your membership strengthens
the occupational therapy community within
Manitoba and provides a strong network of
therapists to advocate for our profession. As
Coordinator of Member Services, I would like to
thank you for your continued support and
membership with MSOT.
Respectfully submitted,

7 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
Current Affairs/Professional Advocacy Committee
T his year we finished the hard work
of previous members of the
committee and published the MSOT Advocacy
Toolkit for our members, a step-by-step guide
we can all use to engage with our political
leaders, MLAs and administrators. It is located
in the “Members Only” area of the MSOT web-
site, and I hope you’ve had a chance to have a
look at this resource and use it! I’d love to hear
feedback about who you’ve met with and please
share your advocacy efforts!
We are also re-working a brochure
“Understanding OT / What is OT” and plan to
have this available for the AGM for you to start
using and sharing. We can also use it when we
have booths to promote Occupational Therapy.
In an effort to continue to advocate for OT, we
sent emails about the provincial election, shared
an online petition for OT on extended health
benefit plans and sent a survey which we share
with COTM, a voice for you in trying to help
members understand and have their questions
answered by COTM with the fee increases.
Through bi-monthly newsletter submissions in
an “Advocacy Corner”.
This was my first year on the MSOT board as
Chair for Current Affairs and Professional
Advocacy along with Thea Toews (until May
2016) and I know that the scope of this role is
vast. There are MANY possible areas to focus in
the area of current affairs and professional
advocacy, so I need your help, the help of every
OT in Manitoba!
What areas are your priority for advocacy?
What current issues or successes are you
seeing? Please share your stories, questions,
concerns. I’d love to hear from you, support
your advocacy efforts or concerns and connect
those with similar interests!
Please email me:
msot.caandadvocacy@gmail.com
We all have a role to play in the advocacy of OT
and so please engage, interact and let’s all work
together to continue to promote OT, so more
people know what we do and we all feel
supported and valued in our roles.
Respectfully submitted,
Heidi Garcia, O.T. Reg. (MB)

OT Celebration Night 2016
This annual event was held on May 17, 2016 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. This year MSOT celebrated 52 years of MSOT in Manitoba. Approxi-mately 115 OTs, students and family attended the event. Attendance was stronger this year as many more Fieldwork educators, family and MOT1 students came to the event. This event is one of the only evenings OTs from across Manitoba come together to celebrate our profession. It is also a great opportunity to meet with new and old colleagues, recognize the outstanding work and efforts made by OTs and congratulate our new graduates and soon to be colleagues. This year we were fortunate to have Ace Burpee as return as our Emcee. He was entertaining and hosted with warmth and excitement. We would like to thank Rebecca Alley MOT1 Representative for encouraging other MOT1 students to attend the Celebration Night. We would also like to thank the Fieldwork Educators and their colleagues for making time to attend this event. We would like to thank the organizing committee of Robyn Taylor, Lana Hochman, Dayna Mascitelli, Robyn Bonnell and Jennifer Fisher. Respectfully Submitted, Jennifer Fisher, O.T. Reg. 10 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
T his past year, the Professional Development co-chairs along with
the MSOT board members and student occupational therapists helped to organize guest lectures during OT Month in October. Students, clinicians and faculty from a variety of health disciplines attended the lunch and learn lecture series. The lunch and learn sessions provided the participants with new research based information and provided a forum for interprofessional networking. We encourage all to attend the OT Month lunch and learn lectures in the fall of 2016. The Professional Development Co -chairs along with assistance from a dedicated planning committee are working hard to organize the fourth Occupational Therapy Research and Innovation Symposium for the fall of 2017. The Research and Innovation Symposium provides those in attendance with an opportunity to share the research they have been working on and network with other clinicians to discuss current and future research opportunities. We look forward to sharing and offering continued professional development opportunities in the coming year. You can keep current on professional development activities by visiting the MSOT website at
www.msot.mb.ca/professional_development_workshops.aspx .

T his year welcomed many new board
members. As newly appointed Co-
Chairs of Special Events, our main focus was pro-
moting and planning the OT Celebration Night. We
are happy to announce that we added new local
sponsors who contributed to the enhancement of
the refreshments and silent auction. Our hope is to
continue fostering these key relationships in the
coming years. Thank you to Donna Collins for shar-
ing her personal OT journey and the thoughtful fare-
well for our colleague Emily Etcheverry on her re-
tirement. There were over 100 people in attend-
ance at the event and we hope the event will con-
tinue to grow in the coming years.
This year’s AGM will be held on Tuesday, October
25th, 2016 at the Viscount Gort Hotel at 5:00 pm.
We look forward to another great year of Special

11 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
Public Relations Committee
T he Public Relations Committee is
responsible for promoting Occupational
Therapy and the role of MSOT through
various events and opportunities. 2015-2016 has
been an exciting year for MSOT, and as the Public
Relations Committee Chair I have been proud to
assist with the following:
The Public Relations Committee participated in
the 2016 College of Rehabilitation Sciences
Open House. MSOT volunteers enjoyed
meeting and conversing with prospective
students regarding the profession and the role
of MSOT within the province.
The Public Relations Committee also organized
a booth at the 2016 College of Rehabilitation
Sciences Job Fair. This event provided a great
opportunity to converse with upcoming
graduates on how to promote themselves
professionally and the benefits MSOT can
provide as a new graduate.
2016 was the first year that the Public
Relations Committee provided representation
on the organizing committee for the annual OT
Celebration Night. The annual event provided
those in attendance with the opportunity to
network with colleagues and catch up with old
friends. It also provided MSOT the opportunity
to welcome new graduates into the profession
and recognize the outstanding work done by
those within our OT community.
In collaboration with the Coordinator of
Communications, the Public Relations
Committee continues to assist with updating
and maintaining our social media sites. As of
August 2016, the MSOT Twitter page has 614
followers and the MSOT Facebook page has
474 likes. This year in particular, MSOT has
seen a large growth in the number of people
reached via our Facebook posts, with one post
reaching over 1800 individuals. Overall, our
social media presence has proven to be
dynamic method of communication to our
members and the OT community.
As the Public Relations Committee Chair, I am
dedicated to continuing the role of promoting
occupational therapy and MSOT throughout the OT
community. I look forward to another exciting year
ahead.

14 MSOT Annual Report 2015-2016
Report from the Treasurer
We regret that the CAOT Update was unavailable
at the time of printing.
I am pleased to provide the Treasurer’s report for the MSOT 2015 – 2016 financial year. The MSOT Board of Directors has been successful in accomplishing its financial goals as presented at the 2015 AGM which is to financially support regular and new activities as determined by the MSOT Board of Directors. During this financial year, MSOT has provided funds to support multiple different events and awards. The following are a few examples of the events and awards that were supported by MSOT: OT Celebration Night Job Fair booth and materials for circulation CAOT Citation Award Professional Development Awards The 2016 – 2017 budget was developed by: Considering the actual revenue and operating costs of the 2015 – 2016 financial year Reviewing anticipated membership enrollment and fees Reviewing and considering planned events and projects with their anticipated costs Considering member priorities for funding and support of special initiatives.
Please take note that there will be an approximate $4855.00 deficit in the years to come due to decreased membership enrollment and fees associated with the new online registration process. Based on the current MSOT funds, we will only be able to sustain ourselves for three more years provided membership enrollment does not continue to decrease. We, as a board, are hoping to get further input from our members during the AGM to determine how to proceed. I encourage all MSOT members to join us at the AGM on October 25th, 2016, as your input is important to us. At this time, I would like to thank the MSOT Board of Directors, Sandra and Carmen for their continuous support throughout the year. See you at the AGM! Sincerely, Nadine Lam, O.T. Reg.
