THIS Saturday marks the33rd running of the HardenPicnic Races with the firstrace meeting being held in1980.

That meeting was startedfrom scratch by a hardworking committee.

Pat Brown was on thatcommittee and he spent manySundays out at racecoursewith his family along withmany others. Pat is still on thecommittee this year.

The cup in 1980 wasfought out by to Cootamundragallopers with Bobby Bobtailthe winner, trained by JohnShoard, and Grecian Phoenix,trained by the late RayStevens, placed second.

The best horse to havepossibly won the cup wasChance Affair, trained byDavid Middleton, as it wontwo Harden cups and a WaggaCup.

One local racehorseowner with some recentsuccess is predicting thatformer Harden trainer, ChrisHeywood, who is now basedin Wagga, will train threewinners this Saturday. He hastrained nine winners in the

last four weeks and his son,17-year-old Mick, rode hiswinner at Denniliquin lastSaturday with MemphisFlash.

Chris Heywood has ahorse in each race this yearand has Maniago running inthe cup.

Three Buddies, whichwon last year, is runningagain this year and is likely toattract support in Saturday’srace.

And while the racing isthe obvious highlight of theday, the Harden Picnics arealso the ‘must attend’ socialevent on the local calendar.

The Harden Picnics are agreat promotion for theHarden district and regularlydraws great crowds.

At the 2012 meeting thecrowd travelled from acrossthe state, including Sydney,Southern Highlands, ACT,South Coast, Riverina,Central West and, locally, theSouth West Slopes.

Owners and trainersappreciate the strongcompetition and rich prizemoney on offer, including the$7,000 Claas Harvest Centre

Wagga Wagga, Harden PicnicCup.

Sky Racing will providetelevision coverage of theMVRC Cox Plate meetingand all other metropolitan andprovincial race meetingsduring the Picnics.Bookmakers and a tote willcover the local races as wellas metropolitan races.

Many of the racegoers usethe race meeting as anopportunity to celebratefamily reunions, specialbirthdays and hens and bucksparties. With marqueebookings growing each year,there are more than 20marquee bookings at thisyear’s picnics.
