That meeting was started from scratch by a hard working committee. Pat Brown was on that committee and he spent many Sundays out at racecourse with his family along with many others. Pat is still on the committee this year. The cup in 1980 was fought out by to Cootamundra gallopers with Bobby Bobtail the winner, trained by John Shoard, and Grecian Phoenix, trained by the late Ray Stevens, placed second. The best horse to have possibly won the cup was Chance Affair, trained by David Middleton, as it won two Harden cups and a Wagga Cup. One local racehorse owner with some recent success is predicting that former Harden trainer, Chris Heywood, who is now based in Wagga, will train three winners this Saturday. He has trained nine winners in the last four weeks and his son, 17-year-old Mick, rode his winner at Denniliquin last Saturday with Memphis Flash. Chris Heywood has a horse in each race this year and has Maniago running in the cup. Three Buddies, which won last year, is running again this year and is likely to attract support in Saturday’s race. And while the racing is the obvious highlight of the day, the Harden Picnics are also the ‘must attend’ social event on the local calendar. The Harden Picnics are a great promotion for the Harden district and regularly draws great crowds. At the 2012 meeting the crowd travelled from across the state, including Sydney, Southern Highlands, ACT, South Coast, Riverina, Central West and, locally, the South West Slopes. Owners and trainers appreciate the strong competition and rich prize money on offer, including the $7,000 Claas Harvest Centre Wagga Wagga, Harden Picnic Cup. Sky Racing will provide television coverage of the MVRC Cox Plate meeting and all other metropolitan and provincial race meetings during the Picnics. Bookmakers and a tote will cover the local races as well as metropolitan races. Many of the racegoers use the race meeting as an opportunity to celebrate family reunions, special birthdays and hens and bucks parties. With marquee bookings growing each year, there are more than 20 marquee bookings at this year’s picnics. The organising committee thanks local businesses for their marvelous support and making our Picnics possible.
