Writing of this band willexhibit significantirrelevance, withsignificant incoherence.Content will be largelynegligible and/orinaccurate.

0 – offered rarely, tostudents failing to makeany attempt at writinganything of value.

1 – offered to studentswho recognize the pointbeing discussed is value,and attempts to brieflycomment on it.

2 – offered to studentswho attempt to write atlength about the givenfactor, but fails to achieveanything of note.

Writing here will becharacterized by a lack ofunderstanding of the point/ factor / event /personality. Whilecoherent, it will be evidentthat little coherentanalysis has taken place.

Content will often be brief,and treated superficially.Sweeping statementswould have been made tocover that fact, and bepassed off as analysis.

Writing here will often berelevant, but narrative.The focus would be on thedescription of events, thanthe explanation of howevents serve todemonstrate a point aboutthe factor being discussed.

Content will be relevant tothe factor, event orpersonality, if not thequestion.

Writing here willdemonstrate anunderstanding of therequirements of thequestion, and offer arelevant analysis. Theapproach will be analytical,with sections of narrative /description.

Content will often beaccurate, and expressedcoherently most of thetime.

Writing here will exhibit amastery of the principlesbehind essay writing, andoffer a fully relevantresponse. The quality ofanalysis is consistent, withlittle weakness ornarration.

Content will be accurate,and offered in a mannerthat shows control overthe response.

10 marks will only beawarded to responsesrequiring no room forimprovement.
