1) What is the difference between weather and climate?

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere ata particular time and place.

Climate is the general weather of an area over a long period of time.

3) What causes Earth to experience weather?

Weather is caused by the Uneven heating of Earth’s surface by the sun.

4) What is the difference between maritime and continental air masses?

Maritime: wet

Continental: dry

4) What is the difference between maritime and continental air masses?

5) What is a hurricane? Explain how and where it forms.

A low pressure area that gets energy from warm, humid air over water. Have heavy rainfall and high winds. Wind speeds in excess of 75 miles per hour.

6) What is a tornado?

A rapidly whirling, funnel shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch Earth’s surface. Usually occur where warm and cold air masses collide.

7) What is tornado alley? Why does it experience so many tornados?

An area of the United States that has a highfrequency of tornados. It is an area wherehot and cold air masses regularly “crash” into each other providing the opportunity forsevere weather.

7, cont’d) What is tornado alley? Why does it experience so many tornados?

8) Draw symbols for the following: COLD FRONT-----

8, cont’d) Draw symbols for the following: WARM FRONT---

8, cont’d) Draw symbols for the following: STATIONARY FRONT—

8, cont’d) Draw symbols for the following: HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM---

8, cont’d) Draw symbols for the following: LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM---

9) Name and Illustrate the tool that would be used to measure the following: AIR PRESSURE

Barometer

9, cont’d) Name and Illustrate the tool that would be used to measure the following: WIND SPEED

Anemometer

9, cont’d) Name and Illustrate the tool that would beused to measure the following: TEMPERATURE

Thermometer

9) Name and Illustrate the tool that would be used to measure the following: WIND DIRECTION

Wind Vane

10) Where do cold ocean currents originate? Warm?

Cold currents originate from the polar regions

Warm currents originate from the equatorial region

11) What effect do ocean currents play on the landmasses they border?

Cold currents cool areas they pass by. Example, this area is cooler than other areas due to the cold current that passes it

11, cont’d) What effect do ocean currents play on the landmasses they border?

Warm currents heat areas they pass by. Example, this area is warmer than other areas due to the warm current that passes it

Type Where it forms Temp Humidity

Maritime Tropical

13) Over water, near equator.

14)Warm 15) Wet (rain, etc)

Maritimepolar

16) Over water, near one of the poles.

17) cold/cool 18) Wet (rain, snow, etc)

Continental tropical

19) Over land, near equator

20)Warm 21) Not much that I’m aware of…

Continental polar

22) Over land, near one of the poles

23) Cold/cool 24) cold, dry air, so no humidity!

12) Fill in the following chart for types of air masses:

25)What is an isotherm? Draw an example of how this is shown on a weather map.

An isotherm is a line that connectspoints of equal temperature.

26) Where in Texas is there a low pressure system?

There is a low pressure system over the Dallas area.

27) What type of front is in New Mexico & Colorado?

A stationary front (bumps and trianglesare on opposite sides of the “line.”

28) What type of front is moving through Louisiana?

A warm front (bumps)

29) What type of weather is occurring in Georgia?

The shading indicates precipitation…rain!

30) What type of weather is Indiana experiencing?

Indiana is under the center of a high pressuresystem and is therefore experience clear skies!

31) What type of weather is San Francisco having?

Most of California shows nothing happeningand like San Francisco, is experiencingclear skies!

32) Would you expect it to rain in Minnesota in the next day or two and why?

It sure looks like rain is coming! Yes, the skies in Minnesota are currently clear, but it looks likea front, with a bit of rain, is on it’s way.
