HULLBRIDGE SPORTSYellow
Good afternoon and welcome to Mill Fieldfor today’s FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Roundgame versus Hullbridge Sports. We sendour usual warm greetings to the players, supporters, management and officials ofHullbridge and trust you all have a safejourney home.
The history of the FA Cup contains manya giant killing and it’s about this time ofthe year that all those Non-League teamsleft in the competition dream of gettinginto the 1st Round Proper and play againstFootball League opposition - something ourClub has managed just twice in our longhistory. This is the furthest that HullbridgeSports have ever reached in the F.A. Cupand they will no doubt be looking for agiant slaying performance against a GraysAthletic team that at the point of writingsits proudly at the top of the RymanPremier Division. Grays Athletic ’s historydoesn’t contain many fantastic journeys inthe FA Cup, but maybe - just maybe -today will be the start of one of those jour-neys that puts our Club into the spotlightand - probably more importantly - earnsthe financial rewards to secure its immedi-ate future.
It would be fantastic if in our 125th yearwe were able to achieve something andtoday gives us an opportunity to go a littlefurther on that long road. Whoever pro-gresses, I wish them every success in thenext round and hopefully several rounds tocome. Games come thick and fast at thistime of the year and the job of producing ahome match day programme falls to ourproduction team of Glyn Balmer and hisloyal [aka elderly – Ed] assistant, GlynJarvis. This is our fourth home game inquick succession, so hat’s off to both theGlyns for producing what many believe isone of the best programmes in the RymanLeague. We have several contributors thatmake up this programme, including ourManager Mark Bentley, Coach David Raven,Photographer Peter Jackson, StatisticianChris Jones, Designer & Printer MarkKettlety, Life President Glyn Jarvis, TrustMembership Secretary Glyn Balmer andMichael Parker. [Asst Ed – can’t think of atitle for Parker then, Tony?] [I can – Ed]. Iwould also be remiss were I not to mention
occasional contributors George Watts,Steve Allen (Muttley) and Paddy Brennan(Paddles O’Maddles). I send my thanks toall of you for the great job you do for andon behalf of the Club, [Asst Ed – the Edand I also appreciate your pithy[spellcheck – Ed] and timely contributionsthat NEVER miss our print deadline……!].
Our physio Jack Hughes also joins thisweek’s thank you list after leaping over thebarrier at our home game last Saturdayagainst Bognor to give first aid to a younglad who had tripped on the terracing. Thecall for a first aider went up and Jack wasimmediately on the scene shortly followedby Steve Boughen, our Health & SafetyOfficer, to administer the required treat-ment. The family of the young lad wasvery grateful for the prompt action andtreatment supplied by Jack and Steve andsent thanks for the prompt actions andreactions.
Finally, may I remind you all that ourhome game against Kingstonian next weekhas been moved up to Friday 2nd Octoberat 7.45pm due to a fixture clash with ourlandlords Aveley FC on the Saturday. Please note also that the FA Youth cup willnow be played on Monday 28th Septemberhere at Aveley FC with a 7.45pm kick off.Prices are £3 for adults and £1 for conces-sions. Enjoy this afternoon’s game andmake some noise for the boys. Come onyou Blues…. Please see the article “A day in the life ofa GAFC programme editor” later in thisprogramme.

Good afternoon and welcome back to
Aveley and this next round of the FA
Cup. I would like to welcome Rob
Hodgson and his Hullbridge squad
here and I'm sure they are well up for
causing an upset.
We are all fully aware that the FA
Cup can spring up some surprise
results so my players must treat this
game like all the others we have this
season and they know anything less
than that could result in a lot of egg
on our faces. Dave Raven has been on
his travels to watch them in the week
so hopefully we have identified areas
in which we can hurt them. Being the
side from the higher league we having
nothing to really gain as we are
expected to win but if that "compla-
cency" word creeps into our perform-
ance then we could have all to lose
and no more so than much needed
finances that potentially come with
this great competition.
I have my targets for which round I
would like to get to and it is certainly
further than this one. So I am looking
for a real professional performance
from the players this afternoon. As we
saw in the previous round against
Biggleswade Utd it won't just happen
by itself, so we may need to be
patient at times.
Your support from the sides may
prove a big help for the players so I
look forward to you guys creating a
good atmosphere. Enjoy the game.

CHARITY MATCH FEATURING
GRAYS ATHLETIC ALL STARSOn Sunday 27th September a hugely important game
will be taking place at Thurrock FC, Ship Lane.
Shelley Webb is a local girl who suffers from Multiple
Sclerosis. She desperately needs stem cell therapy to
prevent her from losing her sight.
As part of the fund raising efforts to make this treatment
possible, a combined Grays Athletic and Thurrock FC
All Stars Collaboration will take on a Tottenham Hotspur
and Celebrity XI. That might sound like a bit of a mouthful,
but the Thurrock and Grays Athletic side will be managed
by none other than Mr Tony Gay.
The list of names on his team sheet is simply mouth-water-
ing. Expect to see the likes of Aaron McLean, Jamie Stuart,
Steve West, Martin Carthy, Glenn Poole, Ashley Bayes and
Stuart Thurgood in action.
Other legends such as Gary Hooper and Michael Kightly are
contractually prevented from playing, but may make an
appearance at the game if at all possible.
It's a 2pm kick off, and it goes without saying that every
penny raised will go towards Shelley's treatment.
It's a fantastic opportunity to make a huge difference to her
life, and the chance to see so many former Grays Athletic
legends go into battle together again makes for
an unmissable event.
More information to follow as it becomes known.
The Club currently requires additional help on match days in
a variety of different roles including the following:
* Assistance in the Board Room
* Programme / Raffle Sales
* Operate on various gates throughout the ground
* Ballboys

a number of set dates throughout the season, please see any Club

I thought for a change this week, rather than quote Trust membership numbers at you(135, since you asked), you might enjoy a little sneak behind the scenes of the programmeproduction process. Here is a typical dialogue (Tuesday 22nd September 2015, 8.53pm) :-

Hello everybody and welcome to thisFA Cup game against fellow Essex side,Hullbridge Sports. As we all know, agood cup run is vital for many non-league clubs, it can attract attentionand perhaps more importantly prizemoney. So you would think that mostGrays’ fans would want that this sea-son? Well there could be one exceptionto the rule. 26-year old Darren Manningused to stand on the terraces at TheRec to cheer on his boyhood team buthe is now involved at Hullbridge Sports.
After he tagged me on Facebookabout today's game when the draw wasmade, I thought I would ask him a fewquestions about this match up. Darren,I remember us watching GAFC at TheRec, do you still live in Grays? "Yep, Istill live in Grays, I can still see wherethe old ground used to be from myfront door!" So what is your connectionto Hullbridge and how did you end upthere? "I am a coach and also reserveteam manager. I was managing EssexOlympian League side Herongate andgot a call from my good friend RobertHodgson (Hullbridge manager).
He offered me a chance to join hismanagement team and manage thereserves" . What was your own reactionto this cup draw? "Was a bit surrealreally, especially after being involvedwith, and being from Grays to be partof a team against them" What areHullbridge Sports ambitions? "We havea very ambitious group of players andcoaches over here so we are looking topush on and progress as quickly as pos-sible" What are your own ambitions infootball? "I'm looking into more coach-ing badges so I can go as far as possi-ble in the game".
Last question! How has the seasongone and are there any Hullbridge play-ers we should look out for? "Haha nowthat would be telling, wouldn't it! Wehave got 3 or 4 that could comfortablyplay at a higher level. We have only lostonce so far and have good momentumgoing into this game Saturday, which isthe furthest we have ever got in the FACup" Thanks for answering the ques-tions Darren, see you Saturday!
Enjoy the game Parker

2000: Redgrave wins fifth Olympic gold
British rower Steve Redgrave has enteredOlympic history by winning his fifth con-secutive gold medal. Redgrave won hisgold alongside Matthew Pinsent, TimFoster and James Cracknell in the coxlessfours on day eight of the Olympic Games inSydney, Australia.
The crowd of 22,000 dominated by Britishfans, let out a roar of triumph and reliefafter a thrilling and nail-biting race thatsaw the British crew win by less than halfa second ahead of their closest rivals Italyat Penrith Lakes. Pinsent fell into the wateras he rushed over to hug his fellow oars-men and Redgrave slumped over his oarsin exhaustion. It was Pinsent's third suc-cessive Olympic gold and a first for Fosterand Cracknell.
According to the Times newspaper, afterthe race Redgrave said to his crewmates,"Remember these six minutes for the restof your lives. Listen to the crowd and takeit all in. This is the stuff of dreams." Thefour Britons took the title over the 2,000-metres course in five minutes and 56.24seconds, beating the Italians by just 0.38seconds. His father, wife and three childrenwere overcome with emotion as theywatched Redgrave make sporting history.
Britain's Minster of Sport, Kate Hoey, wasalso watching the race in Sydney and saidhe was "the greatest Olympic athlete of alltime". The 38-year-old rower has had a
glittering career winning the coxed fourgold in Los Angeles in 1984 and the coxlesspair golds in Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in1992 and Atlanta in 1996.
Only Hungary's Aladar Gerevich beats himin the tally of consecutive golds - he wonsix in succession between 1932 and 1960 inthe team sabre fencing. After Atlanta hefamously announced he should be shot if hewent near a boat again. Today he wouldonly say he wanted to enjoy the moment ofvictory before thinking about his future.
Princess Anne presented the medals as theBritish National Anthem was played andthousands of spectators shouted "Arise SirSteve!" There is little doubt that Redgravewill be knighted for his Herculean achieve-ments. He already has a CBE for services torowing, adding to the MBE he received 10years ago.

Records show that HullbridgeUnited Football Club was formed by agroup of local men, fronted by thethen proprietor of the Anchor Inn, aMr. A. W. Moss. He owned a roombehind the pub known as Buff ’s Hall. This was where the club held its firstmeeting. A Mr. Brown generouslyallowed the club to play on his land,on the corner of Pooles Lane andLong Lane.
Hullbridge United’s first colourswere Green and Gold quarteredshirts, White shorts and Green socks, which, by an amazing coincidence, were the same colours as those onthe flag flying outside the AnchorInn! Affiliating to the Essex CountyFA in 1947, Hullbridge Unitedentered the Southend & DistrictLeague for the upcoming 1947-48season. 1950-51 saw HullbridgeUnited reach their first Cup Finals. Inthe Section ‘C’ Final of the SouthendCharity Competition, United beatMaxwell Sports 4-1. Four weekslater, in the Southend & DistrictLeague’s French Cup, Hullbridgefaced Rochford Athletic but, some-what unluckily, lost the Final bythree goals to four.
After six seasons of Second Divisionfootball, 1951-52 saw Hullbridgefinally gain promotion – and they didit in style, winning both theChampionship and the French Cup.In the final, Hullbridge defeated thereserves of Great Wakering Roversby three goals to nil. In all, the clubplayed 28 matches that season, scor-ing an amazing 141 goals. The summer of 1953 saw the clubchange name to Hullbridge Sports. After a few poor seasons, timesimproved for the club when they wonthe 1956-57 Third Division Champ-
ionship and the League’s Shaw Cup.They finished five points clear ofCanvey Island Sports in the Leagueand saw off Victory Athletic reserves3-2 after extra time in the Cup Final.Suffering relegation at the end of the1958-59 season, Sports’ stay in theThird Division lasted but four sea-sons as, in 1962-63, ‘Bridge wonpromotion as runner-up in the newlynamed Second Division with a dra-matic final day victory to ensure pro-motion on goal average. Drawing 4-4at home to Southwick Rovers,‘Bridge scored three goals in thefinal fifteen minutes to gain a 7-4victory and promotion.
Another double was achieved dur-ing the 1965-66 season whenHullbridge won the First DivisionChampionship and Section ’C’ of theSouthend Charity Competition –beating Southchurch Rovers 3-0 in areplay after a 2-2 draw. Arespectable fifth place finish wasachieved in the Premier Division thefollowing season, along with beingFrench Cup finalists. 1968-69 sawHullbridge finish bottom of thePremier Division but just three sea-sons later the club regained theirPremier Division status, finishingrunner-up to Canvey Island AmateurFC at the end of the 1971-72 season.Good cup runs that year saw the clubreach the semi-final of the RamuzCup and the Fourth Round of theEssex Junior Cup.
In the late 1970s the club decidedit wanted its own ground.Negotiations with Rochford Councilproved successful and the club tookcontrol of 16.5 acres of farmland inLower Road (at the top of Coventry

HULLBRIDGE SPORTS F.C. AND THE F.A. CUP
As today is the first time we have played acompetitive game against our visitors, Ithought it would be interesting for all thoseattending to learn more about The Sportshistory in the world’s greatest CupCompetition. The Club was founded in 1945and they spent their first 45 years as a jun-ior Club, initially in the Mid Essex League, followed by the Southend District League, the Southend Borough Combination and theEssex Olympian League. Senior status wasobtained in 1990 when they joined the EssexSenior League. Since 1994, they have com-peted in the F.A. Vase and their entry intothe F.A. Cup was accepted in 1999.
The following information has been provid-ed courtesy of The Football Club HistoryDatabase – www.fchd.info. The database -a positive mine of information for the foot-ball statistician - lists the main records forover 8,600 Clubs. Sports first three seasonsin the F.A. Cup saw them lose 1-0 each time, away at Histon and at home to WelwynGarden City and Concord Rangers. Theirfirst win came in 2002, with a 1-0 victory atSaffron Walden Town in the ExtraPreliminary Round. They lost 5-2 at home toEdgware Town in the Preliminary Round.Three more defeats came in 2003 to 2005away at Brackley and Bury Town, then athome to Wisbech Town. 2006 saw anothervictory away at Chalfont St Peter, followedby defeat at home to Yaxley, who have justbeen beaten in a replay
There was a loss at Stansted in 2007, butthis was followed by another win in 2008 athome to Leverstock Green, with defeat awayat Rothwell Town in the next round. Theironly draw to date was in 2009, 0-0 at StMargaretsbury, but a 1-0 replay home defeatended their interest for another season.Three more years of first time losses cameat Cockfosters, at home to Royston Townand at Southend Manor, before another winin 2013 at Woodbridge Town. Defeat fol-lowed at Clacton. In 2014, they were on thewrong end of a 5-4 game, away again atCockfosters. The Sports current campaignhas been their best so far in their 17th sea-son of F.A. Cup action. Home wins againstHadleigh United and Ryman Division OneNorth, Maldon & Tiptree, put them into theFirst Qualifying Round for the first time intheir history. A 1-0 win at fellow Essex
Senior Leaguers, Basildon United, a weekafter losing by the same score to the Bees athome in the League, has now extended theirbest run in the Competition. So they havenow registered seven wins, four of themaway from home, one draw and 16 defeats.Grays Athletic lost to an Essex SeniorLeague side in 1994, a season when wewere also in the Ryman Premier Division. Itwas against the re-incarnated RomfordFootball Club. Romford had closed down forthe second time in their history in 1978.
It was another 14 years before they re-formed. It was their third season back whenthey were granted entry into the F.A. Cup.They made national headlines with twogiantkilling acts against us and Hayes andalmost took St Albans City to a replay beforegoing down 1-0 at Clarence Park in a matchthat was featured on the BBC Grandstandsports programme. I’m afraid I was at ourgame when we lost 4-3. Romford weregroundsharing with Hornchurch and afterbeating Wingate 2-0 at Bridge Avenue, theydrew us at home. Although we weren’t par-ticularly comfortable in the game, we were3-1 ahead in the second half. Before long itwas 3-3 and just as I was settling for ascrappy draw and a replay at the Rec, theywon the tie in the last minute!
For our current F.A. Cup campaign, wehave already met Biggleswade United fromthe Spartan South Midlands League, thesame level of the Football Pyramid as theEssex Senior League, but covering a differ-ent geographic area. Our 5-0 win wassomewhat flattering, as it took a Glen Littlemasterclass in the last 15 minutes to takethe score from an uncomfortable single goaladvantage to the final score in the recordbooks.
Hullbridge Sports have also made a muchmore impressive start to their League cam-paign compared to their Bedfordshire coun-terparts. They are lying in sixth position atthe time or writing with three wins, twodraws and a solitary defeat. Today is also anEssex derby. The team from Lower Road, close to the River Crouch, have an opportu-nity to make more football history in the vil-lage. For us, we have to demonstrate thatour higher status is deserved and we have toearn the right to play in the Third QualifyingRound again. Let the game commence.

Hill), with the club moving during1980. Transformation of the site wasslow, with the clubhouse not official-ly opened until 1983.
The end of the 1979-80 saw Sportsput six goals past the SouthendEstuary ‘keeper to win Section ’B’ ofthe Southend Charity Competition. A move up to the newly formedSouthend & District Alliance in 1982found the club wanting. Finishes ofsixth and eighth and First Roundknockouts in the League Cup wasn’texactly what the club had hoped for.The only bright spot was reachingthe 1982-83 Southend Charity ShieldFinal, although they lost 0-4 toRayleigh Town. Nevertheless, again, looking for a higher standard of foot-ball, Sports then joined the EssexOlympian League for the 1984-85season. They immediately won pro-motion after finishing third in theSecond Division.
At the end of the weather-hit 1987-88 season, Hullbridge (now in theSecond Division again) broughthome the Essex Intermediate LeagueCup, beating First Division Benfleetin the Final, held at the old NewWrittle Street ground of ChelmsfordCity FC. After a 1-1 extra time draw, courtesy of a Mark Wood goal,Sports went into the replay 12 dayslater having played five Leaguematches in between! However, aftera goal-less 120 minutes, Sports won5-4 on penalties.
Looking for a further climb up thenon-league ladder, Hullbridge madeimprovements to the ground during1989 so it passed the grade for sen-ior football. 1990 saw the EssexCounty FA grant the club senior sta-tus and so the club joined the EssexSenior League for the 1990-91 sea-
son.Matt Petre had the honour of scor-
ing the club’s first goal in seniorfootball when, on 25th August 1990,in the club’s first match of the EssexSenior League season, he scoredSport’s only goal in a 1-3 defeat byvisitors Stansted, in front of a 163crowd. At the end of their first sea-son, the club finished in arespectable 12th place.
The new floodlights were put togood use during the 1999-2000 sea-son when, after seven cup-ties, theyouth team reached the Third Round(last 64) of the FA Youth Cup.Visitors Blackburn Rovers won the tie6-0 in front of a crowd of over 800.After taking over the managers hotseat during February 2006, EnricoTiritera oversaw a gradual improve-ment in the club’s fortunes on thepitch. The 2008-09 season showed agood improvement for the club andthey attained their highest numberof points (41) over a 30-match pro-gramme. The club also reached theQuarter-finals of the East AnglianCup for the first time.
In 2009-10 Hullbridge reached theQuarter-finals of the Essex SeniorCup, again for the first time, beforelosing narrowly 0-1 to FootballLeague side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2010-11 season saw Sportsreach their first Cup Final as a seniorclub, the County FA’s TolleshuntD’Arcy Memorial Cup. Unfortunately,Sports were beaten 1-2 by BraintreeTown.
Dan Braney and Mark Bliss tookover the reins from Enrico Tiritera, who departed the club in March2013. In their first full season, 2013-14, Dan and Mark guided the team totheir best ever FA Vase Cup run,

The launch of the GAFC 1890
Supporters Trust "12th Man"
fundraising initiative.
As many of you will be aware, a numberof Football Club Trusts and SupportersAssociations in non-league footballundertake fundraising initiatives in orderto help their club meet the costs incurredover a season.
These funds have been used towardsmeeting the costs of fielding the team, management and coaching personnel. This has helped a number of Clubsimprove their League position.
As an example the Dulwich Hamlet F.C."12th Man" scheme had contributed over£22,000 to their club's budget since itslaunch in 2012.
We recognise that we are lucky enoughto have a fantastically loyal base of sup-porters who are always willing to con-tribute to the Club via season tickets, advertising, player sponsorship, matchattendance, buying programmes, 50/50tickets, Community Chest tickets, GoldenGrays, raffles and supporting varioussocial events.
The board of the Club is extremelygrateful for these funds, as while we donot have the income stream that wecould generate from having our ownground, these monies are very importantto our progress.
We would, however, ask the supporterswho feel that they would like to con-tribute more towards Club funds, to con-sider using our "12th man" scheme to dothis.
It works in the following way:Supporters can pledge to donate funds
to the scheme for every game that wewin or draw. For example, if you pledge£2 per win and over the season we win25 games, your donation in total wouldbe £50.
In addition, you may wish to contributea fixed amount per month regardless ofresults which would also be welcomedand a standing order can be set up tofacilitate this.
The scheme has been discussed at Trustmeetings during the close season and wehave already received total pledges of£210 per month,£85 per win and £22 perdraw. As a result, should we have a suc-cessful season on the pitch, the schemecould generate well over £4,000.
This season, after two years of consoli-dation in the Ryman Premier League, theClub are very keen to push on in theLeague and would welcome your supportmore than ever.

GAFC TRUST UPDATE ON THE 12TH MAN SCHEME
Following the introduction by the Grays Athletic 1890 Supporters Trust of the
new fundraising scheme, here is an update of the amount pledged based on the
first month of the season.
August was a great, unbeaten month for the team, with six wins and two
draws. Supporters have pledged £215 a month regardless of team results, plus
£90 for each win and £26 for each draw and £2 per clean sheet. Based on these
amounts, the total donation for August is £764. The Club is most appreciative
of this support towards player travel and out of pocket expenses.
After two years of consolidation in the Ryman Premier League, the Club is very
keen to push on in the League and would welcome your support more than ever.
Should you wish to add your name to our growing list, please see Trust

reaching the Fourth Round (last 32),before being beaten 1-3 by eventualwinners Sholing FC. It was unfortu-nate that the club had to travel toSouthampton for the fixture on a wetTuesday evening in January. Theteam under Braney and Bliss tookthe new record of points that hadbeen achieved in the 2008/09 sea-son, finishing ninth with 53 pointsfrom a 38 game season, but the icingon the cake was winning the GordonBrasted Memorial Trophy, the firstever silverware as a senior club, beating Haringey Borough 1-0 in thefinal, Michael Edgar scoring the onlygoal.
Mark Bliss took sole charge of theteam during the 2014/15 season andwas joined by coach Steve Tapley.Between them they took the club toits highest ever league position andpoints tally, finishing fourth in theEssex Senior League with 71 pointsand 73 goals along the way. With yetanother Fourth Round FA Vase run, only losing away to Flackwell HeathFC. Mark and Steve decided to stepdown for the 2015/16 season andHullbridge appointed its youngestever management team installingRob Hodgson as the new First TeamManager along with Aaron Hunwicksas the new Coach.
The Non-League
Paper
With
Sheridan Robins
Whether it be Premier League, FootballLeague or Non-League, one thing remainsa constant in football news – managerialre-shuffles…and the last few weeks havebeen no different.
Gary Whild has left KidderminsterHarriers after five seasons at the club asassistant and manager, and Neil Aspin hasmoved on following a six-year stay at FCHalifax. The National League’s bottom twosides made the difficult decision to pursueother options, acting on recent results andthe clubs’ current league positions. Theseprolonged stints, in themselves, are anachievement and both were full of success.
As assistant to Steve Burr, Whild ledKiddy to runners-up spot in 2012-13 andhelped discover and develop big-moneysales like Jamille Matt and Joe Lolley, whileAspin masterminded three promotions inhis time at FC Halifax and sold on the likesof current England international JamieVardy, Lee Gregory and Scott Hogan for anear-£1m profit. But shorter tenures canoften make the decision even tougher tomake. However, in a results businesssomething has to give. Tim Dixon has leftHythe Town after a winless run of 10games left them occupying a place in theRyman Division One South relegation zone.Dixon may have spent just 16 months inthe job, but waiting to ride out the stormcan often be more of a risk than making achange.
Many will disagree with timing, personneland other mitigating circumstances thatcome with running a football club, butattempting to turn things around can becrucial. Recently, Paul Cox said goodbye toNational League side Torquay United whileEvo-Stik Division One South side, Lough-bourough Dynamo, saw Lee Morris depart.
But in these cases the reasons are differ-ent. The former Torquay boss left due topersonal reasons, while Dynamo are look-ing for new leadership following circum-stances out of their control. Morris, whowas in the hot-seat alongside JasonMaguire, has recently been handed a pro-motion in his coaching role at DerbyCounty’s academy and splitting his timebetween the two was no longer feasible.
Although Jason Maguire is to stay at theclub for the foreseeable future, theunprecedented re-shuffle undoubtedlytakes its toll. With Dynamo currently sit-ting precariously in 20th place in the table,a period of uncertainty was not part of theplan. Unlike the Football League andPremier League, rumours are not alwaysflying around about who might take thefreshest job on offer. Advertising thevacancy online is a method often used tothrust unknown, but qualified, applicantsin the direction of Non-League clubs and,in turn, help to secure an appointmentswiftly.
Doncaster Rovers, currently in LeagueOne, were heavily criticised for adoptingthe same approach on their own website inrecent weeks. But with Non-Leagueunleashing a vast amount of talent, bothon the pitch and in the dug-out, whyshouldn’t these clubs adopt a new tactic tofind their perfect match and quickly?
One thing is for sure: there will be plen-ty more movement in the dug-outs as theseason progresses but the results that fol-low are often the most intriguing. Clubseither look to bounce back from the disap-pointment of the departure or push for-ward and change results – all with thespotlight on the new boss.

Good afternoon Exiles - some-
thing I've been for
most of my life !
I haven't done an article for the pro-
gramme since my Pulitzer Prize [Ahem
– Ed] winning piece on Chinese football
back in the winter of 2012-2013.
However, the Irish Tinker has returned
from the land of eating interesting
insects and strange meat and is back
ensconced in my Penthouse apartment
at the back of Ayr High Street. And, in
the time that I have not been chained
to a computer dealing with work and so
forth, I have been chained to a com-
puter dealing with a pet project of mine
from years back ! Naturally, it concerns
football and these articles are a spin-
off on the research I am doing.
I approached the editor who must be
obeyed [quite right – Ed] a.k.a. Glynbo,
and he gave it the nod. I'm going to do
a little piece in each programme about
players from foreign climes who have
played for the Mighty Blues at some
period in our long and glorious history.
It's my baby and the rules are that they
must have played in the Premier/
Football League in its various guises at
some period and played at least once
for our first team. They might have
been born in Britain but, if they played
internationally for another country, I'll
include them. I'm not including players
from God's own country [Is Essex
classed as a country? – Ed] because,
obviously, at some period in time, it
was manacled to you lot ! Not only
that, but that could be an idea for arti-
cles at another time. I've used many
and various resources and would hope
that the information is as accurate as
possible - but nobody's perfect, even
me, ask my ladies ! What I will say is
that I've been having a lot of fun
researching everything and it's fasci-
nating what you can find out there. I
hope you enjoy these articles - there's
more than you might think - and they
give you all something to discuss over
your half-time cider! [I’m teetotal – Ed]
.

Born : 1891, Mexico.
Died : 1964, Auckland, New Zealand.
Clubs : Queens Park Rangers, West
Ham United, Charlton Athletic and
Grays Athletic.
Some sources say Frank was born in
a town called Luopagno but a town of
that name cannot be found and neither
is there any record of his birthdate.
What is known is that he was born in
Mexico in 1891 ! He turned up at
Queens Park Rangers in the late 1900s
and, when the Park Royal side won the
Southern League Championship in the
1911-1912 season, he won a medal
playing as a full-back. West Ham
United, who finished mid-table in the
Southern League that season, signed
him during the summer of 1912 and he
played his first game for the club on 5
October 1912 when Plymouth Argyle
were the visitors to the Boleyn Ground
and approximately eight thousand sup-
porters saw the home side win 3-1.
Frank, who could play as a left or right-
back, soon became popular with the
home crowd, earning the nickname
'Bronco' due to his loping gait and 'ex-

traordinary' on-field contortions (what-
ever that means). Before World War
One, he formed a successful full-back
partnership with Jim Rothwell that last-
ed up until the 1914-1915 season when
Billy Cope became the other regular
full-back.
Frank enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers
for World War One serving with the
23rd Sportsmen's Battalion first before
transferring to the 1st Battalion. He
fought on the Western Front through-
out most of the war, fighting in battles
such as Cambrai, The Somme and
Ypres. His bravery won him the Croix
de Guerre and the Medaille Militaire
and yet, he still managed to play forty
games for West Ham United in the
London Combination when on leave.
West Ham United were elected to the
Second Division of the Football League
for the 1919-1920 season and Frank
made his League debut on 6 September
1919 when he scored the first goal in a
4-1 win over Lincoln City at Sincil Bank
while playing at centre-half. He was a
fixture in the side for these first two
seasons but, in the summer of 1921, he
was sold to newly-elected Third
Division (South) club, Charlton Athletic.
He once again became a regular in the
side, generally playing at right-back,
and he was part of the side that went
on an amazing 'giant-killing- F.A. Cup
run in 1923. They defeated First
Division sides Manchester City (away at
Hyde Road Stadium), Preston North
End and West Bromwich Albion before
succumbing in the Quarter-Final to
Bolton Wanderers, 0-1 at The Valley,
South London. They, of course, went on
to defeat his old club, West Ham
United, 2-0, in the first final to be held
at Wembley. However, the season did
end on a high note as Frank picked up
a medal as part of the team that beat
Crystal Palace, 2-1, to win the London
Challenge Cup.
Still a regular for the side, in the win-
ter of 1924-1925, Frank left Charlton
Athletic and moved to Grays Athletic
(some sources say Grays Thurrock
United but it's our mob) to finish his
career as the team's Player-Trainer, as
he was called, in the London League.
You might say that success led to his
departure as the London League was
won in 1926-1927 and, the following
July, he became only the second man-
ager of Real Oviedo of Spain's Asturias
Regionaliga. He did, of course, speak
Spanish, but he left in January 1928.
All we know after that is that he died
in Auckland, New Zealand in 1964
although, again, some sources say
1967.

"The Ryman Football League strongly support the FA statement that there should be a zero
tolerance approach against racism and all formsof discrimination.
Accordingly any form of discriminatory abusewhether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexualorientation, gender, faith, age, abil ity or any
other form of abuse will be reported to the TheFootball Association for action by that
Association."
before putting his tackle in. There was no
contact and it was around the halfway line
so the referee put a marker on the game
by awarding a free kick and having a word
which I thought was fair enough and a
good decision to calm things down. Upon
resumption of play the attacking player
receiving the ball from the free kick was
mangled by the combine harvester playing
at centre-back and the referee waved play-
on. The attacker was carted off and I
would be surprised if he played again in
the next few weeks.
It was announced back in 2013 that foot-
ball was going to try and solve the problem
of the triple whammy of a penalty, red card
and a ban...the powers that be are still
talking about it, losing support, losing
friends and any credibility they might have
had by bringing in important changes to
the LOAF like enforcing players to wear
tape that is the same colour as their socks
and woe betide any player wearing black Y-
fronts under those white shorts. Maybe if
they spent less money on respect cam-
paigns and campaigned for respect the
football family might become a little less
dysfunctional.
Something interesting is happening down
in the murky depths of Sunday
league...roll ing substitutions. Just like
youth football, the senior game has
realised that the way to increase participa-
tion at the levels of the game where par-
ticipation is dwindling is to make it easy to
increase participation. With rolling subs it
means your best player can leave the
nightclub at a decent time, get half an
hour in, have a snooze then come on for
the last fifteen so his team-mate can have
a roll-up before pretending to help get the
nets down. It's a great idea and just goes
to show that the powers that be really do
have the power to do the right thing for
footy.
At the time of writing I have just got in
from watching a match somewhere up the
M11. When I'm on my rambles I tend to let
the game settle down then make some
notes, record some stats and then film the
second half. What I actually do is record
only when the ball is in play and tonight's
match saw a season's best for the ball in
play with a whopping 28 minutes out of 45
on the clock. It beats the previous best by
a whole 2 minutes and the 'worst' by a
whopping 7 minutes...that's right
folks...ball in play for just 21 out of 45 sec-
ond half minutes. Form an orderly queue
for a refund...
Today we welcome the FA Cup back to Mill
Field. Our opponents are Hullbridge Sports
from the Essex Senior League and like our
opponents in the previous round they try
to play football and will be determined to
continue their record-breaking run in the
competition and, as in the last round, we
will not underestimate the opposition. The
Sports are a fantastic community club with
a true footballing philosophy and a devel-
opment path from mini-soccer right
through to the men’s and women’s senior
teams and it has always been a pleasure to
take a team or referee there. I hope every-
one at the club enjoys the occasion and
regardless of the result wish them the very
best of luck for the future and hope to see
them pushing for a place in the Ryman
League.
Time to ramble on...
EDITOR’S NOTE: The article above is a per-
fect example of why our programme has
been quoted as “one of the best in the
league”. Not because of my minimal efforts
- but those of our contributors.

Raven’s
Ramblings
With
David Raven
History is full of absurdities: the army of
Liechtenstein returned from battle with
more men than they started with; Robert
Liston suffered a 300% mortality rate from
a single operation; the people of
Hartlepool once arrested, tried, convicted
and executed a monkey for being a French
spy; Flora was a margarine for men and
Jay Leader was sent off for denying an
obvious goal-kick opportunity. Not for the
first time this season, we have a red card
that makes no sense. One of the things
that gives football its unique flavour is the
debate raised by refereeing decisions and
while we might not like the outcome, we
eventually simmer down [Not me – Ed],
understand why the referee has made a
decision and grudgingly accept it and on
rare occasions defend it, even if it means
we end up buying our own drinks. Instead,
we increasingly see referees abandon com-
mon sense and render what should be a
rousing, competitive football match into lit-
tle more than a Marx Brothers farce. [I
wouldn’t want to support a club that would
have someone like me as a supporter –
Ed].
Last Saturday I watched in flabbergasted
flabbergastery as a defender was sent off
because a striker stumbled over the round
thing. The striker had followed in a rasper
of a shot which came back off the crossbar
and instead of tucking away the rebound
he fluffed his lines and as he stumbled
after his miscue a retreating defender
caught his leg and down went the attack-
ing player in what appeared to be an
attempt to spare his blushes at missing the
sitter. Fairy snuff, the penalty was awarded
but to the surprise of everyone who under-
stands football Rickie Hales was shown a
red card. It's called denial of an obvious
goalscoring opportunity, or DOGSO for
short, and you can be shown a straight red
card for it. For me an attacking player has
to be clearly in control of the ball ie within
a yard of it, bearing down on goal and
about to pull the trigger for it to be obvi-
ous. Sadly, there is no recourse for Hayles
or Leader in these situations and we are
left wondering when we are going to start
seeing officials who have an understanding
of the game that has not been fed to them
through technical manuals.
Referees have the hardest job in football,
made impossible by everyone else in foot-
ball. Apparently. The referee is on a foot-
ball pitch because every now and again the
players have little disagreements about
who should get what and so an independ-
ent arbiter is needed to make a fair deci-
sion based on a set of laws that were
agreed upon several million years ago
before dinosaurs were allowed to wear ties
and sit in governance of the beautiful
game.
The laws of association football, referred
to as LOAF, come in a handy handbook for-
mat for those prepared to pay a few quid
for it - or you can get it for free on the
wordwildebb when they can be bothered to
keep the links up to date - and there are
interpretations of the LOAF towards the
back of the handbook so that those inde-
pendent arbiters and everyone they upset
can know and understand why they are
upset. Referees don't always help them-
selves and can go from the sublime to the
ridiculous in a matter of a minute or so.
On Sunday I was watching a local game
which was evenly contested and as the
game wore on and players got tired the
tackles started to take a little more meat
off the bone. One 'challenge' saw a
defending player leave the runway and
level out at at a decent cruising altitude
win over Lewes. He returned to Dagenham &Redbridge having made thirty-two appearances, and scoring nine goals for the Blues.
