The ‘Veer Naris’ (WarWidows) of 8 JAK LI (Siachen)today called on President

Pranab Mukherjee here atRashtrapati Bhavan.

The 8 JAK LI is organisinga pilgrimage tour for these‘Veer Naris’ from RashtrapatiBhavan to Rishikesh,Haridwar and Badrinath tocommemorate the 30th year ofthe capture of Bana Top,President's Secretariat said in astatement.

The Infantry contingent ofthe Army Guard belongs to 8thBattalion Jammu and KashmirLight Infantry (Bravest of theBrave).

8 JAK LI (Siachen) wasraised as the first BattalionBorder Scouts by volunteerswho took arms in the aftermathof communal passion and the

smouldering embers of partitionto check the multitude ofkabalies infringing into Poonchon December 18, 1947.

Born in battle and purified inblood, the battalion was rechris-tened as 8th Jammu & KashmirMilitia. In 1971 war, theBattalion was outwitted, out-numbered but never outclassedin valour and fought the defen-sive battle successfully despiteenemy's passion for Chhamb.The battalion was awardedBattle Honour - Laleali and

Picquet 707. The Regiment wasrechristened as the Jammu &Kashmir Light Infantry on April27, 1976.

During the Siachen tenure inJune 1987,the Battalioncreated his-tory by cap-turing 'Qua-id Post' at anhigh altitudeof 21, 153feet, thehighest bat-tle field inthe world.

The postwas rena-med as BanaTop in hon-our of NaibS u b e d a rBana Singh,Param VirChakra.

The bat-talion wasawarded Ch-ief of ArmyStaff UnitCitation in

2001 for its sterling perform-ance in the Poonch Sector.

The Battalion established theUnited Nation Mission in Sudan2006 and was conferred withUnited Nation Unit Citation inthe year 2007 for handling thebloodiest of clashes ever in thehistory of Sudan. (UNI)

PM meets girl who had sought help for

heart surgeryPUNE, June 26:

Prime Minister NarendraModi today met the 6-year-oldgirl here who had written to himseeking help for her heart sur-gery owing to poor financialcondition of her family.

The PMO respondedpromptly and arranged helpfor Vaishali Yadav, who need-ed surgery for a hole in herheart, through the Pune dis-trict administration. She wasoperated upon successfullyearly this month at a city hos-pital.

Vaishali today got theopportunity to meet Modi, whowas in the city to launch proj-ects under the Smart City mis-sion.

Pratap Yadav, her uncle,later told reporters that the PMoffered her a chocolate andspoke to her a few sentences inMarathi.

The Prime Minister tweeteda photograph of his meetingwith the little girl later.

"Priceless moments withyoung Vaishali", he said onTwitter.

"After her surgery, Vaishaliwrote a touching letter to me,which will remain etched in mymemory...Glad we were able tohelp this little girl," the PrimeMinister said. (PTI)
