Mark Zuckerberg and President Barack Obama during a town hall meeting at Facebookheadquarters, April, 2011.

When youre Mark Zuckerberg, you can do things a little differently from everyone else. Worrieabout a pesky construction project next door? Drop $30 million andbuy up a four-pack of your

neighbors homes. Worried that the NSAs widespread surveillance may undermine everyonestrust in the internet and torpedo your social networking business? Give the President a call.

Apparently, thats what Zuck did last night, shortly after the websiteFirst Look Mediareportedthat the NSA had been masquerading as a Facebook server in order to infect target computers.Ive called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government iscreating for all of our future, Zuckerberg wrote in a note he posted to Facebook today.

When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine were protecting you againcriminals, not our own government.Mark Zuckerberg

A White House spokeswoman confirmed that Zuckerberg and Obama spoke last night, discussinrecent reports in the press about alleged activities by the U.S. intelligence community, but shedeclined to tell us what exactly was said. It seems, however, that Facebooks CEO and founderdid not get what he wanted. Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for true fureform, Zuckerberg wrote.Zuckerberg is just one of the many people across Silicon Valley who are concerned about thefuture of the internet now that ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden has revealed the extent ofthe agencys surveillance programs. Although companies such as Facebook may participate inmany of the agencys efforts, the scope of the NSAs spying has taken even savvy Silicon Valleyinsiders by surprise. Widespread spyingundermines everyones trust in the internet. To keepthe internet strong, we need to keep it secure, Zuckerberg wrote. This is why Ive been soconfused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the US government. When

our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine were protecting you againstcriminals, not our own government.Things were once better between Zuckerberg and Obama. Just over two years ago, Facebookhosted a town hall meeting where the friendly discussion revolved around the economy.Backthen, the U.S. Federal Trade Commissions scrutiny of Facebooks privacy policieswas the topicmost likely to come up in a private conversation. Since then, the tables have turned, andZuckerberg is now the guy worried about privacy.Today, Zuckerberg called on the feds to be much more transparent about what theyre doing, o

otherwise people will believe the worst. But that isnt going to happen any time soon. Thoughthe NSA has said that parts of yesterdays reportsare incorrect, there remains much that is stilunclear.

Zuckerberg is upset because the Feds are stealing crops from his data farm? Irony just croake

    W26Supergiant

I think he is worried because he now understands that the Feds are undermining the

basic principles of freedom and liberty on which this country was founded and he

understands that the American public...his customers.... don't have the B@lls to do

    anything about it.

    drbloor

If you're on FB, you're not a customer, you're content. His customers are the

businesses he sells your information to.

    Fritz Gneisenau

Is it much better if you use DISQUS ?

    M W

Zuckerberg is worried that some people might retreat from products like

Facebook out of fear of NSA spying. He's worried about his bottom line. I'm fine

with that as long as his interests align with mine.

    Scott McCain

I think this is where he's (Zuckerberg) is coming from. My thought, after

reading the latest Snowden reveal, was to delete my FB account and

never go back again. It's apparently one of the NSA's favorite vectors for

attacks. I already knew about their package injection capabilities via

QUANTUM, and I knew they had the capability of "outracing" a link (by

doing some clever information induction which just screams quantum

coherence). And by doing so they could spoof just about anything theywanted. Like a naive child I just assumed they used that tool to find the

bad guys in the dark corners of the net - places I don't go so I don't have

worry about it. The latest reveal changed my outlook entirely.

    Fritz Gneisenau

I fail to see why they cannot pull the same s... with any other popular

serivce such as gmail, hotmail and gmx.

networked computers. They are ALL wholly insecure. Android, Linux,

    Windows, iOS,OSX all hopless.

    MustBeSaid

More like he's worried about how the bad press will affect his business. That and

    only that.

    notaun

    Save some surveilance for me!

    Carbon-12

He phoned Obama, but right in the middle one of them sneezed and the NSA guy listening in

    reflexively said "Bless you."

    Ran Dome

Aww, how cute, he thinks it might actually accomplish something. Here Zuck, The President jus

called, he said the NSA promises to stop spying. You believe it and feel better now?

    Silver Fang

Even if it might be a publicity stunt, it at least raises awareness as to what's going on.

    BillStewart2012

So is thatwhy I keep getting all those Facebook Friend Requests from my big brother?

    M W

The NSA should be completely defunded. It's an unnecessary agency.

I'd also like NSA employees to be prosecuted for hacking crimes like citizens are, but we know

that'll never happen. The law applies to us, but not to the NSA. They can break the law wheneve

    they feel like it.

    PeteEllis

The NSA has the duty to protect us from the cyber war operations conducted by China,

Russia and the other hacking nations. If we defund it we leave ourselves completely to

the likes of the Chinese Communist party and their hactivist friends! Some things may

need to be fixed but you can not through the baby out with the bath water. Vote For the

right people this November and this can be fixed.

    M W

    1. There are no "right people" to vote for. The "right people" have no hope of

collecting the necessary money to run a viable campaign. 95% of federal

elections are won by the candidate with the most money. That means, whoever

cozies up to donors like Booz Allen, Monsanto, and Goldman Sachs the most is

most likely to win any election.

    2. The US government is inept. They're not protecting us from anything. They've

fooled people like you into believing we need to spend hundreds of billions of

    dollars a year "protecting" us.

    3. The Chinese are not going to hack me. And even if they did, there's nothing I

have that would interest them. American corporations are the ones who have to

worry about getting hacked. But guess what, that's their problem, not mine. It's

their responsibility to protect themselves from hacking. It is not mine. They're

forcing me to pay for this inept "protection", which is really just used to violate m

rights. That's a redistribution of wealth from the poor and middle class to the

    wealthy.

    PeteEllis

So your take on the US is that all hope is lost in continuing a constitutiona

Republic? So what is your solution to these problems. How do you handl

    these problems in China?

BTW, the Chinese have been caught hacking Facebook, they care about

knowing every American as best they can. So, when they attack the US

they can defeat us in detail!

    M W

No, not all hope is lost. A constitutional amendment on campaign finance

can fix this, and it can be done at the state level where the corruption isn

quite as bad. It won't be easy, but it's possible.

    www.wolf-pac.com

I don't really care about what the Chinese are doing and that threat is

exaggerated anyway. Government officials always exaggerate threats

because that's how they trick the public into increasing the funding for

their pet projects. The US government has cried wolf so many times, I

    assume they're always lying...and I'm usually right.

    starrychloe

What MW said. The NSA can't even stop the Chinese from stealing F-35 jet

fighter plans! America and Britain invented modern public key encryption - witho

    the government!

    PeteEllis

So, you know for a fact that the Chinese have stolen F-35 fighter plans.

That is complete nonsense. It is just part of the Chinese propaganda effo

to make the world think they are a first world military power. truth is they

still rely on massive numbers just like they always have. I am sure Japan

would kick their ass in a Naval war.

    Fritz Gneisenau

NSA's job is to protect the 1% against the 99%. I am sure Mr Zuck will understand this

    concept in the long run.

Can't the NSA respect facebook and just buy the private information like everyone else? Jeez...

absolutely. and it's you're, not your.

    Enzo

He'd better cash in his beans before the dems printing press runs out of paper after all that is th

WHOLE reason FB is valued so obscenely high on OUR backs.

    alexandrek

FB is the commercial version of the NSA, they are collecting all your datas to better sell targeted

ads, push marketing and sell at high price marketing landscape and intelligence

    Fritz Gneisenau

Plus he collects all your psychological weak points, should the feds ever feel a need to

    destroy you.

Think of a war they make and you oppose, for example.

    PeteEllis

Think about what foreign countries are doing with this information as well.

    alexandrek

not sure a lot of countries can afford the prices that FB is putting on your

datas, only giant groups as P&G, unilevers and the US can. Most others countries, as Russian shown recently, are targeting big

people, deciders, politicians, not the masses like nSA

    PeteEllis

That is incorrect. China collects data on ordinary Americans.

China is the worlds real cyber criminal. everything you hear about the US

comes from one source, Snowden. He betrayed his country why would h

    be telling the truth now?

When you dance with the devil, expect to get burned.

    PeteEllis

Why do people give FB their information and then yell rape? If someone told me twenty

years ago that this would be happening I would have told them they were insane.

    Sam Makco

Proves that even Mark Zuckerberg doesn't know it all! He called the wrong man !

    Steve Johnson

Seems the NSA is taking some plays from Putin's play book.

you think the NSA just started doing this stuff recently? there have been reports, both by

the NSA [we wholesale spied on American's sending telegrams, but we stopped just

before a reporter was about to out us, and a number of whistleblowers over the years].

they have been doing illegal things at least since WW II, if not earlier.

the concept of 'oversight' seems to be a joke to both Congress and the NSA, unless the

NSA is caught spying on Congress.

    Scott McCain

The NSA wasn't commissioned until after WW II (1950s I believe), so not since"at least WW II". Before 9/11 most of the NSA budget was spent on SIGINT whic

was very specific to foreign intelligence. It was the patriot act that weaponized th

    NSA.

I do agree with you regarding the oversight though. I got a serious chuckle

recently over how Senator Feinstien got her panties all up in a wad because she

found out one of her computers was tampered with.

9/11 got them a greatly increased budget and the patriot act

the patriot act made more of what they legal [the wiretapping they did was

illegal, even with the patriot act]

before 9/11, they were already spying on as many american's as they

could, they just didn't have the budget for it like they have now.

    Fritz Gneisenau

Predecessors of NSA (Army and Navy intelligence, read Puzzle Palace)

did dragnet collection against the entire US telegram traffic since the

existence of telegrams. Nothing really new here.

They also broke 100% of japanese government telegrams to their

embassy in Washington in the 1920s. One reason the japanese got reall

    pissed.

    Scott McCain

I think it's the other way around. Putin's just not as good (or not as concerned) at hiding

I feel like there's a very simple idea that isn't being understood. Why do internet companies (like

facebook, king digital entertainment, or any other app maker) do what they do? What I mean is,

how do they provide these incredible applications to us... for free? In most cases, thesecompanies provide to us exactly what we seek - a means of connecting, entertainment, or data

Have you ever wondered why many of these companies offer these services to you at no cost?

There is no free lunch, unfortunately and it certainly doesn't do their bottom line any good to run

charity, so why do they do it? The trade off here is important. Your data. You give your data so

that the company can, in turn, sell it to interested parties. This is how the facebooks and king

digitals run; they collect your data which you freely give them to use the service and they sell it.

To many, the concern about what these companies/governments do with this data is a very

personal topic, but in reality your data makes up a fraction of a fraction of a kilobyte. It's generall

not individually studied (unless the NSA wants to merk you), or broadcasted to the public, it'ssimply a data point. A data point which is run through a host of algorithms to determine how bes

to sell you things. Perhaps you're a tentacle pr0n connoisseur and you spend your internet time

cavorting about, in search of that one epic masterpiece which brings together in perfect unison

squid, tentacles, and women. That fact ends up in some sales managers office, in a deck with

pretty pie chart claiming that this demographic (you and 10924819084901 other people who fit

into the tentacle r0n cate or have these tendencies and this is how we should sell ou that

Public use of the Internet is merely a courtesy, the World Wide Web is owned by privately

    funded Corporations.

Given the NSA-GCHQ crimes, I am no longer sure this is true. It appears NSA-GCHQowns ALL of us.

Lots of tax money went into it. Lots and lots of tax money and tax breaks.

I'm curious how much revenue was lost during those moments of facebook theft?

    Fritz Gneisenau

Mr Zuck is much more concerned about millions of suckers stopping to divulge their

innermost secrets and feelings to his PHP contraption.

You know, as in "people talking about private stuff only when meeting others in person".

Think about that horrible prospect !

    Dustin

Maybe if our populous was healthy and mentally sane we wouldn't have to worry about

    everything they're doing...
