Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM) - Founda-tion for Noble Work is a non profit organisation that works to improve the quality of life of the poor and destitute in Indonesia.

For more than 40 years YUM has been operating projects that have assisted people across the country regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age or gender. Today YUM operates a range of Health, Education and Community Development projects in the Indonesian regions of Java, Central Kalimantan and Aceh.

YUM is focused on working in an inclusive manner that ensures local communities are heavily involved in the development and operation of all projects.

YUM is a legally registered non profit organization and is independently audited.

YUM’s origins go back to the late 1960’s, when three dedicated social workers, Wilbert Verheyen, Sister Rina Ruigrok and Ibrohim Wessel set up a mobile clinic to serve the poorest of the poor in Jakarta’s slums. The three foreigners were all members of an organization known as Subud.

Bapak Muhammad Subuh, the founder of Subud, officially established YUM in 1976 with the goal of providing health-care and social and educational support to those in need. Over the years YUM built on this foundation and developed several successful projects including the Cipanas Children’s Village.

In 2005, a new Board took over with the goal of improving and expanding operations. YUM now also works in Central Kalimantan still maintaining its original goal: Improving the quality of life for the poor in Indonesia.

WHY INDONESIA

On The Ground Clean Water

Lack of access to clean water is an issue for a large percentage of people in Central Kalimantan. In the majority of villages in the region, water that is used for drinking and washing comes from stagnant and dirty sources, which leads to the rapid spread of diseases and infections.

The YUM Clean Water Project aims to combat this issue by providing communities with the infrastructure and resources needed to develop a clean water

source. YUM works with each community to design and install water tanks, pumps and pipes that will deliver clean, running water to the villages' homes. Once construction is complete, members of the community are appointed by YUM to take responsibility for the ongoing management and financing of the resource.

YUM has already undertaken this project in anumber of communities throughout Central Kalimantan and each is now successfully managing their own clean water source. With the support of donors, YUM is hoping to help more villages in the region to access the benefits of clean, running water.

Before we had the clean water network installed by YUM, we had so many difficulties obtaining water! Because there are a lot of ampar stones in the ground, we couldnt get water. We had to constantly ask for water from our neigh-bors who had drilled wells.

YUM's health projects are centered in Central Kalimantan and West Java, where there is a desperate need for proper health education and resources. A lack of good healthcare also impacts the economic and social aspects of these communities. YUM's leadership in disease prevention has led to major milestones particularly in the areas of sanitation, clean water, health promotion and malaria.

Malaria is endemic in much of Kalimantan. In Bukit Batu, YUM has developed a comprehensive malaria control program that includes diagnosis and treatment, clean water, sanitation and anti-malaria bed nets. The malaria project has reduced cases to nearly zero.

The Community-led total Sanitation, CLTS, project helps mobilize poor communities to build their own sanitary system. Sanitation is a sensitive issue so it is vital that the entire community understand the health benefits and get involved in building facilities.

On the GroundYUM Village Community LibraryThe prohibitive cost of books, under-resourced school libraries and lack of public libraries means access to books in Indonesia is severely limited. YUM is passionate about making reading part of everyday lives in Indonesia, particularly for children. The Libraries Project aims to provide children and adults alike, with access to books and the opportunity to improve their literacy and broader learning.

YUM operates libraries in West Java, Aceh and Central Kalimantan which people of all ages are encouraged to attend to acquaint themselves with the joys and benefits of reading. Children can also participate in a range of activities that take place at the libraries, all of which are designed to make learning fun and enjoyable.

“This library is a huge benefit for the community! So many kids are now able to come and read books, something that is very new in this area. I, myself, have enjoyed the library and all the positive activities I can do in it like read books, draw, watch educational movies. The fact that the library also carries out many fun and creative activities has made the library very popular among the children and youths. I am glad to see that the library is always full with children and their noisy laughter!”

YUM's education projects are wide-ranging including scholarships, teacher training, vocational training and libraries. Children born into families, who for generations were resigned to a life of poverty, have little hope of breaking the cycle unless they have access to educa-tion. YUM believes that a holistic approach to education is key to develop-ing young minds.

Our new vocational training center in West Java aims to address the ongoing problem of youth unemployment. A recent World Bank study found that close to 60 per cent of Indonesians aged between 18-24 are unemployed. The greatest challenge young people face is a lack of experience and a lack of access to employment possibilities. The center endeavors to bridge the gap by providing classes in computer basics, hotel man-agement, english, sewing and job seeking skills.

YUM’s agriculture project in Central Kalimantan is designed to improve the nutritional and economic situation of the local population, as well as to reverse the current deterioration of soil quality.

Through the AusAid volunteer program, the Austra-lian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD), YUM has received the assistance of two eager and talented volunteers to help establish a Rural Center.

The center will be used to demonstrate various organic farming techniques to the local commu-nity that can be utilized in their home gardens. Ultimately, this centre will serve as a meeting place for participants from different villages to be able to share and exchange information that will foster mutual cooperation and capacity building.

The project aims to promote organic farming as a way to improve the health and nutrition of the surrounding community. The center is currently working on various soil conditioning techniques such as composting, making biochar, worm farming, crop rotation and developing a home garden pilot project.

We work with the local community to learn about traditional farming methods and we then introduce more modern techniques. We combine the best of both worlds in an effort to improve the standard of living of these farming communities.”

YUM’s community based projects aim to provide a better standard of living for those families living in poverty. We work in a number of sectors including agricul-ture and microcredit for women.

YUM aims to create a foundation for long-term stability and growth by promot-ing cooperation between members of each community and show communities what can be achieved when they work together.

The Children’s Village in West Java began as a rehabilitation center for TB patients. Later it served orphans and now it is developing into a Community Development Center. The center is an information point that will serve the entire community and provides much-needed vocational training.

The Microcredit Project in Central Kalimantan helps women who operate small businesses to increase their profits. The program provides training on how to manage small enterprises, budgeting and on working together for the betterment of the community. The program is predomi-nantly self- managed by the women who receive the loans.

Ary Prawoto (Marmitasari), Director. 6 years served.Holder of Master degree in Organizational and Industrial Psychology, Marmitasari has a wide range of Human Resources experience with multinational and national companies, assisting in Recruitment, Selection and Training, and in decision making on important issues within companies’ internal affairs.Since 2002, Marmitasari has been involved in the social projects of Susila Dharma Indonesia a.o. Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM) and between 2005 and 2010 she has coordinated the YUM Aceh Community Center programs in Banda. Aryati is the mother of three children and has two grandchildren.

Hannah Baerveldt, Director. 5 years served.Originally from the USA, Hannah has been living in Jakarta for the past nine years. Hannah holds an Arts and Letters Degree with Honors and is currently a Trustee of the Muhammad Subuh Foundation. Hannah is a member of the International Association of Fundraising Professionals and has also been elected to the Management Board of a Condominium Association in Toronto for which she is serving as Secretary.

Mhd. Bachrun Bustillo, Director. 1 years served.Mhd. Bachrun was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1970 and during the last 10 years has lived in Central Kalimantan – Indonesia. He graduated from “La Sabana” University in Social Communication and Journalism (1994) and has studied Management and Marketing at the Portuguese Institute of Management (1998). During the 1990’s, Mhd. Bachrun was actively involved in the Amanecer Foundation (Colombia) serving several terms as Board Member. He is currently President Director of PT. Kalimantan Usaha Bahagia and is on the Board of Directors of Bina Cita Utama School.
