HARTON DECK THE HALLSThe school never fails to pull out all the stops for our Christmas display and this year is no different.

Staff and students came together to create a stunning Harry Potter-themed dispay in the school’s main hall. The display features a number of recognisable faces and scenes from the popular film series, including a model of the famous Hogwarts Express.

Also getting in the Christmas spirit was Miss Brunniche and her art students who took part in a Christmas card competition.

Some fantastic art designs were entered into the competition but ultimately there could only be one winner.

Year 9 student, Kate Emmett, walked away with the first place prize of £20. Her beautifully detailed robin Christmas card showed her fantastic artistic flare.

Runners up in the competition were Nikita Deponeo and Kirsten Connelly, both from Year 7.

Merry Christmas!

The school’s Governing Body has decided to progress with the request to become an Academy.

The learning experience and opportunities our students recieve is, as always, the main priority. Therefore we are working to ensure that a structure is developed that allows for high quality of teaching and learning. We wholeheartedly believe that this is the right way forward.

We hope to convert as a multi academy trust in April 2017. Discussions have started with a number of schools who wish to join the trust, including Jarrow School and Boldon School.

To keep up to date with information regarding the academy conversion, please visit the school website at:

Year 8, 9 and 10 students get creative in London

New Writing North are hoping to establish a creative writing group in South Shields. This will start from Saturday 19th November and be held weekly on Saturdays at The Word from 1pm - 3pm.

To encourage pupils to attend, New Writing North contacted the school to ask if any students would be interested in a writing workshop with a professional writer. As a result, a number of volunteers from Years 8, 9 and 10 had the exciting opportunity to work with a professional writer on Wednesday 16th November.

Poet and playwright, Susannah Pickering helped pupils create a memorable setting before asking them to create an intriguing backstory for an object of their choosing. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session and produced some fantastic work.

GCSE Film Studies pupils from Year 11 were fortunate to take part in a curriculum enhancing visit to London from Friday 11th to Saturday 12th November.

As well as seeing the sights of London, the group took a visit to the BFI IMAX to see blockbuster film Doctor Strange. Not only did pupils enjoy the film, they also found the screening to be useful preparation ahead of their exam in June, which includes an exploration into the superhero genre.

To support their work exploring the mechanics of the film industry, pupils also attended a seminar at the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) where they learned more about the film classification process.

To round off their trip, pupils went to the “Bond in Motion” exhibition at the London Film Museum. The exhibition had a number of extravagant vehicles from James Bond films on show, including the iconic Aston Martin DB5 that was featured in Bond favourites Goldfinger and Skyfall.

Year 11 and 12 History and Politics trip to parliamentHistory and Politics students from Years 11 and 12 visited parliament during an unprecedented time in British political history.

The students took the train to Westminster just three weeks after the referendum to discuss the big topic of whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union. At the same time, Parliament was in the depths of the Labour Party leadership contest and Theresa May took on the role as the new Prime Minister, the day before the group arrived in London.

Heading straight to the Palace of Westminster and the Downing Streets gates, they were able to witness the arrival of the ministerial cars as the new Prime Minister unveiled a completely new look cabinet. Later, the students enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster and participated in a workshop

examining voting and elections in Britain.

A special visit to the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall allowed them to have an insight of the place which served as the centre of Britain’s war effort during the Second World War. They followed the footsteps of leading government ministers, military strategists and previous Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who all occupied the complex during this time. Many of the rooms have remained untouched since 1945 and the group found it fascinating to explore the underground bunkers which protected the secrets of the British government as Churchill and his inner circle plotted the route to Allied victory while living beneath the streets of Westminster.

Students also enjoyed an excellent performance of Les Miserables at

the Queens Theatre on Shaftsbury Avenue before returning home exhausted from all of the excitement. The students who attended were a credit to the school and to their parents and the staff found it a pleasure to accompany them on their trip to London.

The Science Department ran a competition for students to design a science themed decoration to take pride place on the Science Christmas tree.

Out of the fabulous entries, Amelia Hood came in first place followed by India Rose

Nixon Aitchison, in second place and Nicole Cliffard in third.

The girls were rewarded with goody bags full of treats and their decorations were excibited in well deserved spots on the Science department’s Christmas tree.

Year 12 and 13 English Literature students took a visit to Howarth to get an insight into the lives of the famous Bronte sisters, in an endeavour to underpin Emily Bronte’s novel ‘Wuthering Heights’.

The itinery comprised of varous lectures rooted in

the importance of context and varied interpretations of the iconic text, such as components indicative of the outlined assessment objectives. Students had a enriching experience as they were given a tour of the parsonage and a unique insight into the the lives of the inspirational writers.

Harton Technology College has a long history of celebrating Harvest Festival. This year, on Friday 7th October, we held a series of assemblies in our main hall involving all year groups.

Sixth Form students assisted with the preparation of the assemblies and we also extended the invitation to members of the local community and were delighted to welcome our guests from Cheviot Court Care Home. After the Harvest Festival assemblies our

guests joined us for tea and cakes.

The response from students and their families to the appeal for Harvest Festival produce was, as usual, magnificent. Sixth Form students packed up and delivered over 200 food parcels. Amongst the beneficiaries were the Key Project Homeless Person’s Charity and residents near to the school.

We are now well into our programme of events to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War. The programme will run the course of the war – four years.

We are very proud of our record of remembrance and our Remembrance Day service is always a highlight of the year.

On Friday 11th November assemblies were delivered to every year group in the school. On this occasion, readings

were delivered by Head Boy, Ben Baxendale Smith, and Head Girl, Leoni Loughlin. There were also commemorative performances from the school band and choir.

Our guests from Cheviot Court Care Home joined us again for the final assembly and refreshments. Our students were thrilled to talk with guests about their wartime experiences.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

A reminder to all parents, should your child have a medical condition that requires them to be medicated during school hours:

■ Medication must be brought to school by a parent or carer. Please note - we cannot accept medication of any type directly from the student.

■ Parents/carers are required to sign a Parental Agreement Form prior to the medication being administered to their child.

■ We are able to accept medication prescribed by your GP, in the box that it was dispensed, with Pharmacy Label, child’s name, dosage regime, the date it was dispensed and the expiry date.

■ Please Note: we are unable to accept shop bought or over the counter medication.

■ If your child is on a short course of antibiotics, 3 times a day, please note that it is acceptable to give your child a tablet in the morning, teatime (when they get home from school) and bedtime. In other words, such medication can be wholly administered at home.

Should you need to sign medication in, please contact Ms Mizen on extension 206. Staff will also be available to take details or talk about medical matters at all main school parents’ evenings this year.

As part of our rolling programme to support the need for safeguarding, many of our students have attended awareness-raising sessions this term.

Teaching staff have delivered a series of assemblies about internet safety

and the need for pupils to protect themselves online and on their mobile phones.

Road Safety drama performances have alerted Year 7 and 8 pupils of the need to take great care when crossing roads.

Protecting our children is a matter of great priority and is constantly reinforced through tutorials, assemblies and via visiting performances, such as those above, which were enjoyed by the students and very well received!

We would like to pass on our appreciation to all parents who have responded to our request over the last few months to ease traffic congestion at the school gates before and after school.

We have all seen how congested the

area around the school gates can become around 8.30pm and 3.15pm.

At those key times, other than the school buses, we now allow entry into the school grounds only for vehicles transporting disabled children.

We ask that all other parents pick up and drop off children at a point well away from the school gates to avoid congestion, which is as much an inconvenience for drivers as pedestrians. Many thanks for your patience and understanding!

The Charity Board is made up of a group of students with an interest in generating and distributing funds. This year, the Charity Board has been successful in donating over £3000 to more than 12 different charities chosen by the students. Local charities that have benefited from the cause include Charlie Cookson and national ones such as Cancer Research.

This Christmas, the Charity Board have once again proposed that rather than give each other Christmas cards, teachers

and Associate staff make a donation to charity. All staff will be invited to take part!

There will be a non-uniform day on the last day of term and we hope to donate the proceeds to support four charities, (Macmillan, Children heart foundation, NSPCC and Ovarian cancer) which students will vote on through the VLE. The Charity Board continues to meet regularly with Mr Holyome - all ages are welcome to join!

Year 11 student, Katelyn Merry, has been awarded the title of ‘Female Sports Cadet of the Year’ for the Durham and Northumberland Wing. This was no mean feat, as the Wing consists of 35 squadrons from Hartlepool in the South, to Berwick in the North and has in excess of over 500 female cadets.

Kaitlyn also came away from the inter squadron swimming competition, where she

was given her award, with 3 gold medals in swimming and the junior girls team trophy.

Kaitlyn picked up points by placing in different sporting events and went on to represent the Wing and North Region in sports such as hockey where the team won the national ATC championships.

Congratulations Katelyn on what is a fantastic achievement!

The U15 girls’ rugby team got their season off to a flying start, winning games against Manor Community Academy and Houghton Kepier.

Megan Martin-Lawrence was announced as captain for this year and led by example, scoring several tries and being an exceptional model of strength and discipline. Molly Cook made her debut and made a massive impact with an outstanding performance.

Harton’s U13 team got off to an impressive start this season with their almost brand new team seeing off their competition. Jenna Ord put in an excellent effort, her body on the line and

achieved a stand-out performance. Kora Burn was selected as captain for this year and proved to be a strong leader for her team. Jessica Carr ran circles around Houghton Kepier’s defence and scored try after try.

Congratulations must also go to the girls who have been selected to represent Durham County this year. Kaisha Thompson and Alice Birkert made it into the U18 cohort, and April Ishida, Megan Martin Lawrence, Olivia Lindsay and Jessica White have made it into the U15 squad.

Well done girls!

Year 13 student, Sonny Moyse-Mukhtar, has been awarded silver at the British Schools Judo Championships this year, as well as taking silver at the North of England Championships.

He is currently ranked in the top 20 British U21’s in the U81kg category.

In the coming year, Sonny is scheduled to enter the Scottish Open, as well as training and competing in Paris.

To make achieve such accolades while also studying is a truly inspirational feat. We wish him all the best for his plans in 2017.
