This EPQ will discuss the cultural and scientific importance of the night sky, from our ancestors to the present day. It will discuss astrophotography as a means of acknowledging the cosmos, and as a method of using the sky above us to advance science. I will show how I have used my photographs to analyse scientific data. If we acknowledge the importance of the night sky, then we must consider the greatest threat to it: light pollution. Because of light pollution, the night sky is a diminishing resource.
