A Family Event!
Help raise readers by holding a Family Event!
Celebrate reading and get parents actively involved in their child’s literacy. Invite family and friends to an event. Attendance and sales will increase while family and friends help kids choose books and build their home libraries together. Try some of these great ideas:
• Before school—invite family and friends to attend a Monster Art Exhibition. Increase attendance by showing student artwork and craft projects. Or invite families for a simple breakfast, then some shopping at the Fair.
• During school—Get family and friends together with kids for a Lunch with a Loved One or a BLT (Books and Lunch Together) event. Plan Monster Craft Stations during the day. Kids can make themed bookmarks while parents shop.
• After school—Make Your Own Monster Night. Kids bring their own homemade monster made out of recycled materials and then vote on their favourites. Or host a Monster Movie Night featuring a friendly monster movie, popcorn and shopping at the Fair.
Handy Tips
Increase attendance with photo ops featuring/using monster props.
Families will look forward to photo
sessions.
Include a prize rae for kids who bring a parent with
them.
Use the directional
arrows in your promotional kit to
direct guests to the Fair.
Schedule a stand-alone
grandparents event. Gives grandparents a chance to spend
time with their grandchildren and learn more about
what interests them.
Promote your event with
emails, flyers and sandwich boards in front of the school.
A Family Event!
Kids love a good contest, and they love winning prizes even more! Why not tie some into your Book Fair? Conduct contests during assembly, at the Fair or throughout your school. It will add an excitement-charged energy to your Fair each day, attract more kids to the Fair and encourage multiple visits.
• The day before the Book Fair have students cut out and colour in Book Fair On Tomorrow wristbands. This will be a good reminder to families.
• Fill a jar full of plastic eyeballs using ping- pong balls for a Keep Your Eye on the Ball Guessing Game.
• Monster Hair Day—hand out tickets to kids sporting wacky hair-dos. They can redeem their tickets for prizes at the Fair.
• Door Decorating Contest—challenge classes to team up to cover their doors with the Fair theme or reading message decor. Award prizes to the class with the best door.
• Monster Slime Challenge—Sliming the principal or a teacher is a kid-approved, tried-and-true way to motivate students to reach Book Fair goals.
• Hold a Colouring-in Competition.
