New feedstocks offer new advantagesWith the ever-growing importance of plastics, Total Petrochemicals is aware that demand for polymers will expand beyond the availability of oil-based feedstock. Therefore, the company actively searches for alternatives, while also developing new technologies that can answer the needs of a fast-changing world.

The growing importance of ethaneOver the past years, petrochemicals in Europe have been moving away from the ‘traditional’ naphtha base, with other resources gaining in importance. More and more polymers are produced from LPGs and ethane, which is widely available in the Middle East. Total Petrochemicals recently inaugurated one of the world’s biggest ethane crackers, in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Other projects are under development, but it is clear that even more profound solutions must be advanced…

Diversifying with ‘Methanol to Olefins’A raw material that can be obtained from natural gas, coal or even biomass, methanol offers very interesting opportunities for diversifying feedstock sources, in coal rich countries, for example. Total Petrochemical’s research center in Feluy, Belgium, shows – on a semi-industrial scale – the technical and economic feasibility of Methanol to Olefins (MTO) and the olefin cracking process (OCP), leading the way for a world-first application of this innovative technology for producing olefins and polyolefins from methanol.

Bioplastics for specific applicationsTotal Petrochemicals and Galactic have created the joint venture Futerro to develop technology for Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) bioplastics production. The pilot plant in Escanaffles, Belgium is the first in Europe to demonstrate the state-of-the-art technology that produces biobased and biodegradable PLA plastics from renewable sources like sugar beets. This type of bioplastic is particular useful in food packaging and textile product sectors.

Lumicene®: patented high performance Total Petrochemical’s Lumicene brand products are a new, high performance generation of metallocene polyolefins. Based on patented technology, these polyethylene and polypropylene products offer converters improved processing and mechanical properties. Other advantages include superior cleanliness, improved gloss and transparency and better gas barrier and chemical resistance properties.

Total Ecosolutions: ecologically responsible optionsConsumption habits around the world are changing in the face of a challenging economic climate and growing environmental concerns. Total Group has deployed its R&D, marketing and innovative expertise to develop the Total Ecosystems label. Labeled products offer the same performance as most other available products and services, but using less water, energy and other resources.Total Petrochemicals continues to play a leading role in this area. The several Total Petrochemicals products that have received the Total Ecosolution label help customers – both businesses and consumers – reduce their energy use and environmental footprint.

Start with safetyAs an operator of industrial sites, Total Petrochemicals gives top priority to its safety policy, based on identifying, preventing and managing risks. It seeks at all times to develop and improve the skills and behavior of employees and contractor personnel.

A good neighborTotal Petrochemicals fosters dialogue with all stakeholders at its industrial sites. The “Common Ground” communication program aims to build long-lasting relationships of trust between the sites and their neighboring communities, bringing all parties together to better understand each others’ concerns and expectations.

Managing environmental impactIn line with the Total Group policy, Total Petrochemicals is taking action to reduce the environmental impact of its facilities and products. This includes the target of improving energy efficiency by 2% per year, over 10 years, as well as continuously reducing atmospheric emissions. Total Petrochemicals also uses lifecycle analysis to improve its products and enhance consumer and environmental protection.

End-of-life is not ‘end of value’Plastics can be recycled several times, and still provide value as a source of energy at the end of their lifecycle. To maximize this potential, Total Petrochemicals is developing new solutions for recycling plastics, offering new grades containing recycled polymers, for example. The company also supports the efforts of professional associations such as PlasticsEurope and the American Chemistry Council, to improve the end-of-life management of plastics.
