Dear Fairview Families, Thank you to all families and staff who came out to Prospect High School on Sunday afternoon to cheer on our Fairview Special Olympi-ans. Four Fairview students along with several Lincoln students repre-sented District 57 well in how hard they worked and practiced leading up to Sunday, and their outstanding performance showed that their hard work paid off. Special thanks to Lisa Johnson, instructional assis-tant at Fairview, for taking the lead in organizing all of the paperwork and planning for Special Olympics on behalf of District 57! Over the past two weeks, students in grades 3-5 have been participat-ing in the PARCC assessments. Our third graders have one more math test on Monday, and the rest of next week will be used for make-up testing for anyone who missed any portion of the test due to ab-sence. Our Spring MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing schedule will take place in just over one week between 5/2 and 5/13. During this two-week window, students will be assessed in both read-ing and math (1 test in each subject). As a staff, we will look closely at this data to measure how much our students have grown from early September to early May. When we analyze MAP data, we also look for overall trends over the several years that students have taken these assessments. Globally, we utilize this data to measure our pro-gress toward school wide goals related to our school improvement plan. Of course, we utilize a variety of other measures to analyze growth over the course of a school year including reading and math fluency data, reading comprehension assessment data, math concepts and applications data, and various other classroom assessments. When you receive MAP reports at the end of the year, feel free to con-tact your child’s teacher if you have further questions about his or her comprehensive progress over the school year. Similar to the PARCC test, please encourage your children to give this assessment their best effort in order to show us how much they’ve grown this school year. As mentioned back in March, our state mandated Erin’s Law presenta-tions had to be rescheduled due to conflicts with our presenter from the Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault. These presentations have been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 27

th and will be given by

our social worker, Jamie OBrill and Westbrook social worker, Lisa Ryno. They will utilize the same curriculum that NW CASA was plan-ning to use and will teach students about personal safety, safe vs. un-safe touches, safety steps to follow if someone breaks the touching rule, and good secrets vs. bad secrets. All students will be included in the sexual abuse prevention programs unless a parent or guardian contacts me via phone or email to request that their child not partici-pate (dophus@d57.org, 847-394-7320 x4012). Please see the flyer in this week's packet that provides links to infor-mation about upcoming registration dead-lines and events. The District administration office is pleased to share this information from local organizations.

Mr. Kaiz, Lincoln Middle School’s principal, will visit Fairview on Wednesday, May 4 to meet with 5th graders for a presentation about foreign lan-guage choices and all about 6th grade at Lin-coln! In the next couple weeks, 5th graders will be able to purchase their Lincoln locks in Fairview’s

office. Look for more information about the lock sale in your 5th grade student’s backpack next week.

BICYCLE SAFETY

If students ride their bicycles to school, they need to observe bicycle safety. All students are allowed to ride bicycles to school. They should always observe safe bicycling rules and walk their bicycles when on school grounds. Bicycles should always be locked up at our bicycle racks in the bus turna-round. Skateboards, scooters, and roller blades are not allowed on school grounds at any time.

Linda Frahm Scholarship Fund

Mission Statement: To honor the memory of Mrs. Linda Frahm, a Lions Park

primary teacher, by providing scholarships to fund learning opportunities for

District 57 students to enhance their summer learning. Mrs. Frahm valued

exploring the world around us through multi-cultural lessons, celebrating the

unique characteristics of the individual child, and volunteering within the

community.

Learning Opportunities

Learning opportunities may include (but are not limited to):

● language courses

● summer classes (sciences, math, reading, etc.)

● arts workshops (dance, music, band, etc.)

● sports camps (ice-skating, volleyball, etc.)

Mount Prospect School District 57 continues to partner with Logic Lawn Care to

treat the district grounds. On April 30 and May 1, 2016, we will be applying

Fiesta (chelated iron product) to inhibit and disrupt dandelion and clover growth.

In the event all applications cannot be applied on these dates, the

alternate/additional application dates are May 7 and May 8, 2016 or May 14 and

YOU CAN DO IT!!If you haven’t started training yet, your procrastination has totally paid off.

You’ve saved 2 weeks compared to the 6-Week Couch-To-2.62 Training Program!!

The training program below is being provided as a suggestion only without endorsement other than to say thatit has been adapted from similar training programs created by Nike and other organizations to enable someonewho has never run (jogged) before to be able to complete their first event. This does not mean that you willdefinitely be able to complete the event without walking some of it, but hopefully you will be well on your waytoward that goal. Plan on ”graduating” from each week’s training steps before you move on to the steps in thefollowing week. If you miss a day, it is better to save that day’s workout and do them in order rather thanskipping it and moving to the next one. The steps below do not take into account where you are starting fromand anyone starting from scratch will need to let their body be their guide. Don’t push too hard as you won’tmake your goal of being able to complete the event if you get injured training for it!!

Since this will be your first race, you will probably not be set in your pace - the one that you have been trainingat for 4 weeks. It is extremely easy to get caught up in the excitement of the event and go out faster than yourpace. Start slowly, and increase your pace depending on how you feel. Don’t wait until you are exhaustedbefore taking some one-minute walk breaks. Depending on the pace you set, on race day you may well findthat you can run (jog) around 15-20 minutes before you need a break. You may not be able to complete theentire 2.62 miles without walking, but you will be well on your way toward training to complete a full 5K race. Whatever you do, enjoy the day and celebrate your incredibleaccomplishment!!
