Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time +JMJ June 28, 2020

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

72 years ago the atomic bomb came to be. CS Lew-is wrote a piece about what it means to live in an “atomic age.” I’d like to share it:

In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways…..It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep thinking about bombs.

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

nations.” Deuteronomy 7:7

Upcoming Events & Meetings

Many events/meetings are still taking place online using Zoom. That said, in-person parish meetings in parishes across the Archdiocese are resuming. Praise the Lord!

REP Registration—Starting Now

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions.

Bible Study—Every Tuesday

Please join Seminarian Tyler Huber for a Tuesday Morning Bible Study! Tyler will guide us all through St. Paul’s Letters to the Corinthians. Meetings will be help weekly at 10:00am on Zoom. Zoom is very easy to use and it is FREE. Tyler will simply send out a Zoom invite link each Monday night to those folks who have signed up. Email Tyler to sign up. His email is [email protected].

Parish Library

A book can change your life! All are welcome to borrow a book from our library anytime. The library is located on the west doorway of the church. Please return the book when finished. Many thanks to Seminarian Tyler for organizing and cleaning up the library. It was a big project and it is so wonderful now!

COVID-19 Youth Trip Protocols

Dear Parents,

As you know, we are planning to continue with our youth trips this summer! Know that we’re following the guidelines set out by the CDC, the State of Indi-ana, and the Archdiocese. Safety and prudence will be our priority in all our undertakings this summer.

We will take temperatures as folks gather. No one with a fever can go. No one who has had COVID symptoms can go. No one who has been in touch with someone with or exposed to COVID can go.

Bus guidelines from the State Health Commissioner mandate assigned seats and masks on buses. We will cooperate with that.

News for Both Parishes

Billy Cross’ Bookshelf

The Screwtape Letters

This novel is probably one of my favorite books I have ever read and I come back to it time and time again. It is widely renowned and I would not be surprised if many of you have already read this book. It is written by C.S. Lewis and in classic Lewis fashion the book was both an intriguing story line as well as an interesting take on how sin blinds us to God’s love and things to embrace and reject in order to see and love God more clearly. In Father Mike’s homily not too long he mentioned how sin, a lot of the time, does not burst through the front door but rather creeps into our lives. It has a snowball effect and this novel shows the various ways sin may enter into our homes, lives, and hearts.

The book consists of 31 letters that are written by a devil named Screwtape to his nephew, a young, up and coming demon named Wormwood. The book begins and centers around Wormwood trying to tempt a young man who they refer to as, “the pa-tient,” to move away from God, aka the Enemy. The letters are Screwtape’s advice to Wormwood on how to influence the patient in small ways, pushing the patient further from God and closer to their, “Father,” Satan. If you like and have read other C.S. Lewis books or find some theology books quite dense or even sometimes dry, this book is a great one to get started in and will be exciting throughout the whole story. Although C.S. Lewis was not Catholic, he came very close and many of his works are praised throughout the Catholic Church as being a very ecu-menical and welcoming way to help people under-stand some basic truths about our Faith. In addition, anyone who is a close friend with G.K. Chesterton is always welcome on my bookshelf!

The St. Joe Squirrels

We are blessed at St. Joe to have so many wonderful squirrels running around! They are true gifts from the Lord! Kuddos to Gaye McKenney, Director of the Squirrel Division!

The Generosity of Children

These kids presented Fr. Mike with a donation to St. Joe’s after looking around the house for loose change at a baptism party!

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Have you ever noticed the number of out-right con-tradictions in the scripture? For example: the last shall be first; lose your life to find it; take the lowest seat if you want the highest. These statements go against common sense. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” No matter how we try to explain this statement away, it still means what it says. Losing your life is the only way to pos-ses it. Letting go is the only way to hold on. How can such contrary claims simultaneously be true?

Just think of a glass, it has to be empty in order to be filled. The same is true for us. We have to be empty, like earthen vessels, so that God can pour life and love into us. We have to empty out if we are to be filled up with God’s gifts.

If we are full of pride or anger or possessions or fear, we are so full that God’s gifts cannot get in. If we are so full of ourselves, then we cannot let God or other people into our lives. Another theme of this Sunday’s readings is hospitality. If we are so full of ourselves, we cannot be hospitable to other people.

This week as we pray, lets talk to God about what we need to let go of in our lives so we can let God and other people in. We will be much happier people.

Sr. Joan

Keep Your Rosary in Your Pocket

Pray to our Blessed Virgin Mary! We celebrate her intercessory power, especially as it happens through the Rosary. Please make an effort to keep a rosary in your pocket all the time, and make sure you are praying the rosary on a regular basis. Parents: pray the rosary with your kids so they learn how!

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statute. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. If it rains, please watch Mass livestream in your home. Only a few people will be able to fit in the church.

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unworldly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Thy Holy Love surround them from the world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and their everlasting crown hereafter. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us: obtain for us numerous and holy priests. Amen!

We are accepting nominations for Shelby County’s SVdP President. The new term will start in October 2020. There are a few rules that the Society of St. Vincent De Paul has in order to be considered as a Conference President:

1. You may not be clergy. SVdP is a completely lay driven society. A clergy may be members but not an officer. We are a completely separate entity from the Catholic Church. 2. You must be a Catholic to be President. You do not have to be Catholic to be a member. We have many volunteers who are not Catholic. 3. You will oversee and appoint officers to help you. There are many that will support you. You will be amazed at the outpouring of people wanting to help you and help our less fortunate friends of Shelby County. 4. You do not have to be a member of SVdP to be nomi-nated but if elected you have to, within one year, go to SVdP orientation. 5. The President’s term is a three year term which may be repeated once back to back. Then there must be a term in-between by someone else before you may be elected back in. 6. Eligible voters are SVdP members. Don’t forget…you do NOT have to be a member to be eligible to be President.

To nominate someone: Please email our Secretary Anne Buening at [email protected]. Please send your nomination by June 30, 2020.

Home Visits: Sherry Staehler: Home Visiting Manager [email protected] We are still on telephone visit; some food vouchers are being delivered using non-contact visits.
