Welcome to another example of the excellent quality of our work.

We are pleased to share two award-winning plays with you this spring. Mary Zimmerman’s interpretation of Ovid’s myths is a challenging piece to realize. Faculty director Dale Luciano, working with faculty scenic designer Sean O’Skea and

our students, has created the opportunity for you to visit the realm of grand imagination. Guest director Terri McMahon takes us on a journey to Janusz Glowacki’s sly vision of New York City from the eyes of Polish emigrants in Hunting Cockroaches.

SOU Theatre Arts has continued to grow and is currently the largest exclusively undergraduate theatre arts program in the western United States. The quality of the program attracts students from an expanding radius to our campus. We need more space to deliver the quality of program we are capable of delivering. The additional space will facilitate the department’s ability to supply rehearsal and lab spaces to support the scope and potential growth of our students and faculty.

At this point we are at the beginning of a fundraising process that will need to show support from our patrons, our alumni and friends to stimulate support from private and public funding sources. We are pleased to be able to note that the Theatre Arts building expansion has been selected as the number one priority for capital construction projects by SOU in its requests for state funding support.

Director’s NotesWhen I first saw Metamorphoses during its Broadway run

in New York, I was affected by a powerful sensation of intimate acquaintance with these stories, though I had only the vaguest (and possibly imagined) memories of them from childhood.

I thought to myself, “We know these stories!” In part, Zimmerman’s play is an exploration of how, in our

contemporary world, mythology can put us in touch with ourselves. One of the characters says, “Myths are public dreams and dreams are private myths,” and that’s a wonderful way of recognizing the power and significance of these ancient stories. The play is also (as one member of the cast put it) about how myths themselves are transformed over time.

And then, of course, there’s the water. Why water? Water generates life, sustains life, and purifies life of mistakes and wrongdoing. Water is itself transforming and restoring, and from Ovid, Zimmerman has remained faithful to the central metaphor of transformation and change, the ‘metamorphoses’ of the title, that ties the stories together. The first line of the play, uttered by a woman near the pool, is “Bodies, I have in mind, and how they change to assume new shapes…” This is an evocation of Ovid’s own prayer to the Gods, as he undertook writing his Metamorphoses, to help him “glimpse the secret and speak, better than I know how of the world’s birthing.” And since life comes from water, it is an ever-present part of the play’s environment.

For the actors, working on Metamorphoses has been an opportunity to create multiple, contrasting characterizations, based on ancient archetypes, within a dream tapestry of shifting images and events. For the designers and technicians, it’s been a special challenge to find visual and aural representations of some timeless tales viewed from a contemporary perspective that nonetheless respects the Ovid source. For everyone involved, it’s been a process of exploring the meanings underlying the tales that speak so vividly to our unconscious imaginations.

We live in troubled, complex, and perilous times. It is my hope that Metamorphoses offers reassurance and courage in the revelation that, two thousand years ago, the same thoughts, feelings, grief and joys at the center of human experience have changed very little, if at all.

About the PlaywrightsThe Metamorphoses is a twelve-thousand-line poem, written

by Ovid, which is arranged loosely in chronological order from the beginning of the universe’s creation to Augustan Rome. The poem’s major theme, as suggested in the title, deals with change in many different ways: from the wrathful, powerful Roman Gods, who change their personalities and bodies, to the mortal humans who go through emotional and spiritual changes through the magic of myth.

An early version of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, entitled Six Myths, was produced at the Theatre and Interpretation Center of Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in May 1996. The Broadway production opened at Circle in the Square, New York, on March 4, 2002. Zimmerman won a 2002 Tony Award for Best Director and the play was nominated for Best Play and Best Scenic Design.

In a 2002 interview, Mary Zimmerman said of Metamorphoses: “…if you take the long view, we’ve suffered incredible disasters and transforming events, and yet story goes on, narrative goes on…Even though we die, these stories continue and sort of tie us together.”

Mary Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. Zimmerman has adapted-directed The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, Eleven Rooms of Proust, and Journey to the West. She is a recipient of a 1998 MacArthur Fellowship, an ensemble member of Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company, and a Manilow Resident Director at the Goodman Theatre.

Publius Ovidius Naso, known to the English-speaking world as Ovid, is one of the most important and influential writers of classical literature and is often ranked with the likes of Virgil and Homer. Ovid’s works have directly inspired the literary products of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Chaucer, Dante, and many others. Born in 43 B.C. in Sulmo, Italy, Ovid’s father took him to Rome to study law, but he instead found his talent in poetry.

His poetry, however, clashed with the conservative moral values of Caesar Augustus. He was banished by Augustus in 8 A.D. During his exile, Ovid wrote Metamorphoses. He never returned to Rome and died in exile in A.D. 14.

At SOU, Dale Luciano has directed productions of Aeschylus’ epic Oresteia trilogy, The Cherry Orchard, Six Characters In Search of An Author, Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Woyzeck (his own adaptation) and Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential. For last year’s SOU season, he directed Adam Bock’s Swimming in the Shallows.

His translation of Alfred Jarry’s anarchist farce, Ubu Roi, was performed in 2006 at the Chashama Performance Space (“an Off-Off-Broadway venue that was actually ON Broadway,” he notes) in New York City, as well as having been presented at the Other Side Theatre in Portland and the University of Arizona.

He worked professionally in films and theatre as an actor and a director before he began his teaching career. He was a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Arizona in Tucson prior to being appointed Chair of the SOU Theatre Arts Department, a position he held from 1985 to 2000.

Dr. Luciano teaches courses in directing, dramatic literature and world theatre. He holds a BA and an MA from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and he holds his doctorate from the University of Iowa.

Josh Bowen (Midas’ Servant) is a freshman at SOU, originally from Mill Valley, California. This is his first role at SOU. Credits outside of SOU include Don Jon in Much Ado About Nothing and Yasha in The Cherry Orchard.

Tim Brown* (Sound Designer) is a senior at SOU, originally from Las Vegas, Nevada. He has been accepted into the department’s BFA degree program. Previous SOU credits include Assistant Sound Designer/Engineer for Urinetown, Projection Designer for Arcadia, and Sound Designer for Swimming in the Shallows. Director’s Notes

Welcome to Hunting Cockroaches, described by one student in the SOU Theatre department as a “kitchen sink drama but the sink is a banana.” That says it all.

Januscz Glowacki (Gwo-vat-ski), the author of this bittersweet black comedy, is a Polish émigré living in New York who took his own first years of hard luck on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and wrote a play about them. Cockroaches, insomnia, the fall of communism in Poland and how to crack the American Dream obsess Glowacki’s artistic couple as they struggle in a democracy that can be harder to navigate than standing in the endless food and supply lines of communist Poland.

Humour, one of the major coping devices of the Polish people, is the victor for Glowacki’s characters. Censorship and the constant proliferation of fraudulent information and news hardened Poles’ willingness to believe anything. Making fun of official propaganda was a national pastime from World War II onward as displayed in this piece of insight: A Polish official asks another Polish official to give a realistic but positive outlook for Poland’s future. The official states, “Every Pole will have a personal airplane.” “That’s fine,” states the first official, “but why?” “When someone in Warsaw hears that some potatoes are on sale in Krakow they’d come in useful,” answers the second official.

Hunting Cockroaches’ hero and heroine, Janek and Anka, prevail as well by living on the cock-eyed side of things. And if they can find some work and obtain a green card without losing their humour they will achieve anyone’s dream if not the American one!

Glowacki went to London for the English premiere of his play Cinders in 1981 and while he was there martial law was declared in Poland. Flights were cancelled for weeks and during that transportation block he decided to emigrate to the United States leaving his wife and two-year-old daughter behind. They were reunited after two years but not before he had been reduced to scavenging a mattress from a trash pile to use to sleep in various friends’ and acquaintances’ apartments and at one point being informed by the immigration office that he did not exist at all and if he continued to insist on existing he would be deported. Welcome to America. Have a banana!

Hunting Cockroaches - About the Playwright

Janusz Glowacki is a playwright, novelist, screenwriter, short story writer, essayist, and the author of eight plays, ten books, six screenplays and ten radio plays.

In August 1980, Glowacki spent time with the striking workers at the Gdansk shipyard in Communist Poland, which resulted in the birth of Solidarity, a non-communist trade union. He wrote a novel, Give Us This Day, about the experience. The novel was stopped by censors and therefore published underground in 1981; subsequently, it became an underground best-seller and was later published in the United States in 1985.

In 1982, he immigrated to New York in the wake of martial law being imposed on Poland by its government. In 1985, Glowacki received a New York State Council on Arts grant to write Hunting Cockroaches.

Hunting Cockroaches was originally produced at the River Arts Repertory Company in Woodstock N.Y., then at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the Mark Taper Forum, Alley Theatre in Houston, Wisdom Bridge Theatre in Chicago, Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, and more than 40 other professional theatres in the US. The play was cited by the American Theatre Critics Association as an Outstanding New Play in 1986. It received the Joseph Kesselring Award and the Hollywood Drama League Critics Award in 1987. Time and several other magazines named it as one of the ten best plays of the year.

Glowacki also wrote Cinders, which received the Moliere Award in Buenos Aires for the best production of 1986. Antigone in New York was listed on Time magazine’s 1993 list of ten best plays of the year. His most recent play, The Fourth Sister, had its world premiere in January 2000 in Warsaw, Poland.

Previous SOU credits include Helen of Troy in Women of War and Curio in Twelfth Night. Credits at other theaters include Karen in Dinner with Friends and Helen of Troy in Helena’s Husband.

Bridget Carlson (Lighting Designer) is a sophomore at SOU originally from Portland, Oregon. Previous SOU credits include Stage Manager for Many Moons, Assistant Stage Manager for Women of War and Master Electrician for Romeo and Juliet and The Phantom Tollbooth. Credits outside SOU include Lighting Design, Technical Direction and Electrician for New Century Players and Assistant Lighting Design for the Oregon Cabaret Theatre’s production of Altar Boyz.

Clinton K. Clark (Censor) is a junior at SOU, originally from Bend, Oregon. Previous SOU credits include Ensemble in Phantom Tollbooth and Old Man Strong in Urinetown. Credits outside of SOU include Simon in Jesus Christ Superstar and Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew.

Hunting Cockroaches Guest BioTerri McMahon is the assistant director of “The Clay Cart” at the 2008 Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She was the assistant director for James Bundy, who now heads the Yale Repertory Theatre, as well as for the Yale Drama Program production of “Romeo and Juliet” at The Acting Company. She directed “Guys on Ice” and “Lady with All the Answers” at the Oregon Cabaret Theatre. McMahon also directed “Henry V” at the Kern Shakespeare Festival and “Top Girls” at SOU. She has directed numerous School Visit Programs for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival over the years.
