For a bistro with heart, soul, and a fabulous French twist, look no further than Café Des Amis.

Owner Cheryl spent many years living in France and was seduced by both their food and their attitude towards it. Many members of her family there were restaurateurs, and the love and dedication they brought to their food and service was infectious. The intense, unadulterated passion for cuisine she discovered was totally inspiring, and she became determined to bring the avours and the fervour to Penarth.

This is a bistro in the most traditional sense. Pop in there any time of day or evening and they are sure to serve exactly what you’re looking for. A hot breakfast to set you up for the day ahead; a mid-morning co ee to refuel; lunch with friends; a cheeky afternoon snack such as their yummy crêpes with almost any topping imaginable! Or an elegant candlelit evening meal. A wide range of Petit Plat (French tapas) are available if you just want a drink and a light bite before heading into town, and Cheryl has created her own Plat du Jour – steak, frites and a glass of house red or mussels, frites and a glass of chilled white wine, just £12.95.

Head chef Damien ensures each item on their extensive menu is lovingly prepared with the upmost care and attention to detail from scratch – right down to the stock. All meat and poultry is sourced from local suppliers, and everything is free range so you know that every dish has been created using the best quality produce.

There are many delicious and interesting wines on the varied wine list, with specials also available. And if it’s something a little more fun and zzy you’re after, why not indulge in champagne by the glass or a fabulous cocktail?

Every customer is sure to be extremely well looked after, as this truly is a family a air – with Cheryl’s sister Wendy and her daughter, as well as Damien’s two daughters, all on hand to ensure your visit is as enjoyable as possible.

Party season is fast approaching, and Café des Amis provides the perfect, distinctive venue for any occasion. An intimate dining area can be reserved for parties of up to twenty people, ideal for family celebrations, or you can book the whole restaurant which seats forty.

Cheryl is particularly proud of the Christmas menu, which is available for parties and celebrations from November right up until Christmas Eve. This was incredibly popular last year, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment!

RACHEL BURGESS

Rachel Burgess Bridal Boutique, specialises in ‘handmade and found dresses’: vintage gowns that each tell a story, handcrafted gowns from new Welsh talent, and a selection of one-o gowns from big name international designers.

Unlike other boutiques, all the gowns are available to take away that day and at prices to suit all budgets. A personal appointment system ensures the bride and her companions will have the luxurious boutique to themselves, meaning she can try on a selection of unique gowns in private, with expert advice and undivided attention from boutique sta .

A selection of elegant accessories and jewellery from top London designers will complete the look and are available to try on during

the bride’s appointment. Brides can also choose from a range of unique one-o designer and vintage items to give a bespoke look. Rachel is working with local and national designers to develop a collection which will only be available at the boutique.

Rachel has such a passion for what she does and this kind, caring theme is what has driven her to open such an individual and bespoke boutique: “I have felt so privileged to help my friends choose the most important dress of their life and I am excited to be able to help my brides in their search for their dream gowns,” she said. “I want to provide them with a relaxed and enjoyable experience with no pressure, as well as give the bride an opportunity to try on something a little di erent.”

Brides can also guarantee that the gowns they try on at Rachel Burgess Bridal Boutique are unlike any they will nd anywhere else, because of the unique way in which they are sourced. Rachel - a former theatre stage manager who has plenty of experience of sourcing bespoke items - has an eclectic mix of dresses, shoes and accessories. “It’s all about the ‘ nd’, that’s what gives me a buzz and I want to share this passion and excitement with brides to be” she said.

Some have been commissioned from talented Welsh designers and links from Rachel’s theatre days and others are one-o s from famous bridal designers. And best of all, if you nd a dress you adore, you can walk away with it that day. Great for brides who don’t want a lengthy wait until they say ‘I do’.

Having been a bridesmaid seven times, Rachel Burgess knows a thing or two about choosing the perfect wedding dress.

In fact, her experience of visiting countless wedding dress shops with her bride-to-be friends is the sole reason Rachel

has the knowledge and experience to launch her own bridal boutique in the seaside town of Penarth.

It’s not often that a new year’s resolution lasts longer than the rst couple of months. This year, the nancial services industry will make you a new year’s promise that will be totally di erent and long lasting. Changes to the way you receive advice will have an irrevocable impact on the relationship with your IFA. The starkest change is the abolition of commission and the separation of advice and product arranging. From 1st January 2013 you will have to agree the fee you pay to the adviser, clear and simple. This will be a far better system, especially for you the client, as any charges will be stated on the illustrations and separate from the charges on the product. This clarity and accountability for the work done will enhance your client/adviser relationship and with some careful thought and planning, build a better, more sustainable wealth along with a clearer understanding of what your adviser does.

Romilly IFA are proud to still work with clients that engaged with them over 20 years ago. An annual meeting, a phone call now and again, and regular fund rebalancing helps them keep the clients’ objectives and expectations on track. As an existing fee based practice they have provided clarity for many years.

David Stealey, Managing Director says “Perhaps our biggest endorsement is the fact that we have lived and worked in the same town servicing clients near and far, throughout the last property collapse in the early nineties, the technology bubble in ‘99, and of course the credit crunch. We are

still here and so are our clients. Some years are di cult, we cannot predict negative growth - the market dictates that, not investment decisions. What we can do however is manage out the negative growth with decisive action.”

The company believes it is founded upon reliability which builds trust. Keeping you informed of current markets and always having your best interests in mind drives the success of the rm. So for independent nancial advice from the heart of your community, call them to arrange an initial consultation, there is no charge for a chat.

They also have on display a collection of the famous Welsh lovespoons – an iconic keepsake dating back to the 16th Century, which makes a unique and romantic gift idea for loved ones that celebrates Welsh heritage.

The season of giving is fast approaching, and in addition to all these, the shop will soon have a large amount of Christmas stock, which will add a seasonal avour and provide all the ideas you need for the upcoming festivities, making the often stressful Christmas shopping expeditions easy and hassle free!

This project continues our tradition of providing access to the region’s maritime structures, as we supplied approx 2000 tonnes of sca olding in support of the rebuild of the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare a few years ago.

CASS in the Community

As a local company, we take a positive attitude towards our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and improving our environmental footprint. We arrange team transport for our

We also sponsor several youth sports teams, including Penarth RFC, Dinas Powys Junior Football Team and the Cogan Coronation Football Club. We sponsored the Barry Wartime Weekend community event in June, which was located directly opposite one of our sca olding projects at the Premier Inn, Barry Waterfront. We provided the temporary event sound-stage, which was a variation of our temporary roof structures.

What next?

Our Managing Director (Tom Gent) shares his vision of the future saying, “As a local company we aim to provide the levels of service, quality and safety that people expect of any large organisation. We aim to complete even the largest of projects in major cities in the UK such as Cardi , Bath and Bristol, working near to the public and often with very strict logistics and time scales.”

CASS Hire & Sales continues to grow, employing all local labour to the areas they work in and continuing to support our local community.

Keeping projects on track with a Temporary Roof

Here at CASS Hire & Sales Ltd we don’t just supply sca olding to these large construction projects. We also support many smaller building and maintenance projects in the region. As homeowners at the moment are tending to extend their properties

rather than move, we’ve seen a growth in the use of temporary roofs. These allow projects to continue on track regardless of the weather, thereby reducing downtime. They also provide protection during demolition works or asbestos removal.

CASS Hire & Sales has gone through many changes in the past 18 months, driven by the Directors and management team to make the company more nancially e cient to face the ever changing economy in the UK.

These have been tough times for all industries especially the construction industry.

However CASS has been successful in securing an increased amount of tenders over the last 6 months all of which we are currently undertaking. CASS has a large order book going into 2013 and will continue on the path of growth.

The shop was launched in September this year, and has a beautiful and very personal story behind it. Debbie’s Grandfather used to drive her Nanna, Doris, from Pontypridd to Penarth all the time to meet with friends and go to tea. With such a special connection to the town, Debbie has dedicated her shop to her beloved Nanna.

Dear Doris sells gifts, cards, accessories, homewares, and vintage painted furniture, featuring mainly independent companies, and with everything having a very distinctive feel. With new stock

arriving daily, the shop is full of things perfect for Christmas. Luxurious woollen textiles are readily available to keep you warm and cosy during the cold winter months. Tasty Lindt chocolate advent calendars will make the countdown to the 25th more special for both the

old and the young. Ceramic popcorn and chip buckets provide an original gift idea for the food lover. Beautiful free-standing felted robins will add a festive touch to any home. Colour-in tablecloths are a fantastic concept, keeping younger family members entertained and encouraging them to get creative. From fun stocking llers to big statement pieces, there is something for everyone.

A really cute and very popular present is the Maileg matchbox mice, which are now o ered as mix and match so

you can put together the perfect set. Another rm favourite are the Woodwick candles in some gorgeous Christmas scents. These candles burn with a crackle, enveloping the room with a sumptuous smell and the romantic, soothing ambience of a log burning re.

Something Different at Dear DorisWith so many gift shops around it is increasingly difficult to find a niche in the market. Not for Debbie at Dear

Doris – she has created a truly unique store, with heart-warming origins and crammed with individuality.

We all know how easy it can be to gain weight over Christmas with all that extra food and drink, but Slimming World has shown them and others how you can stay in control, enjoy yourself, still lose weight and, more importantly, keep it o for life.

If you want to lose weight then Nia and Tracy are there to help you do it! They know how di cult it can be to take that rst step and walk through those doors, but once you’re there, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t done it sooner!

New Year, New You at Slimming World

Nia and Tracy at Slimming World know first-hand that being unhappy with your weight is such a horrible feeling - it can make you feel self conscious and inhibits your enjoyment. After going through this themselves, they are now here to help you lose weight and feel fabulous. Operating three groups in Penarth, they are keen for people to get to know a bit more about them. Approachable and friendly, they empathise with those who are unhappy with their weight because they’ve been there before, and are eager to help.

About Slimming WorldFamous for its free foods of which you can eat unlimited amounts.

No food is banned, meaning you can enjoy your favourite treats and still lose weight!

Continuous support throughout your weight loss journey andbeyond.

Tracy became a member of Slimming World in 2010 after discovering that she needed to lose weight for a knee operation. “I really didn’t know what to expect when I joined” said Tracy. “I have a family and it was important to me that I didn’t have to cook separate meals for everyone so was amazed at how easily food optimising tted in with our lives”.

18 months later and over 6 stone lighter, she decided to become a consultant herself to help others lose weight and achieve their dreams, including Nia.

Tracy’s Story

“Gaining 3 stone and being unhappy with my appearance had a huge e ect on my con dence. It made me doubt my ability to be able to do almost anything. I began hating having to do things that I used to enjoy. A friend of a friend told me she’d lost over a stone with Slimming World and could still eat all the foods she enjoyed! I was confused. How could this be possible? There was one way to nd out! I joined one of Tracy’s groups and never looked back. So far I’ve food optimised my way to losing over 2 and a half stone whilst still enjoying my favourite meals like chicken curry, chips, and lasagna. In January 2012, I became a consultant myself and now run another group in Penarth.”

JMD LAW SOLICITORS

Getting your a airs in place for later life and after death is essential but can be fraught with legality and di cult decisions that impact upon you and your family.

Nigel Jones and his team at JMD Law specialise in this area of law. They provide legal but also practical solutions for your concerns, foreseeing situations that you may have overlooked to ensure your wishes are carried out. Common

questions include how to provide for the members of the family who are disabled, have unsettled relationships, are unable to handle money, seen as the “black sheep” of the family or might have drink or drug issues.

As testament to Nigel’s commitment in this eld, he is one of only four solicitors in Wales appointed to the O ce of the Public Guardian Panel of Deputies who refers clients (particularly the elderly) to Nigel. They may have lost their mental capacity to make decisions themselves and he is to manage and safeguard their appointed property and nancial a airs.

Nigel’s team are often instructed in Probate disputes; examples include family members arguing that a parent’s will is invalid because it was not signed properly, made as a result of undue in uence or they did not know what they were doing. Alternatively a child, spouse or common law partner might be arguing not enough was left to them in the will. “These types of cases often only bene t the lawyers; legal fees can be considerable to ght such

cases” said Nigel. “But more than that, they damage beyond repair family relationships and that to me is very sad. After twenty eight years practising in this area, I set my team the task of avoiding these type of disputes when the will and other lifetime arrangements are made in the rst place. Our target is to ensure the deceased really does “rest in peace”.

Nigel has become concerned in recent years with the marketing campaigns of so called “will writers”, targeting the elderly with expensive marketing and seemingly very cheap services. Nigel says “Clients have been duped into paying thousands of pounds for badly drafted wills and services that are

non-existent. I always advise to stay well clear of them and instruct properly legally quali ed experienced Solicitors, who are regulated by a professional body and have comprehensive insurance just in case something goes wrong”.

JMD Law pride themselves on a personal, professional, experienced and value for money service for the over 50’s, the elderly and the vulnerable. “Although based in Cardi

Bay, I have been a Penarth resident for many years. We are always happy to travel to our Client’s home, o ce, care home or hospital” says Nigel.

JMD Law ensure safety, protection, jargon free advice and a strong voice for all of their Clients.

If you are a member or organiser of groups for the over 50’s and would like Nigel and his team to make a free presentation on any of these topics, please contact Laura Henderson on 02920 456780.

Are you a bit nervous about trying contact lenses? Maybe you’re even a bit squeamish about it. For many people it can be daunting enough to have their eyes tested by a quali ed professional, let alone try contact lenses.

At Arburthnot’s we understand people’s concerns. As we’re not part of a big chain, customers who come to us get to spend longer with our team of opticians who will put you at ease, guide you through it and make sure you’re 100% happy. Also, by being independent, we have the bene t of being able to use whatever products we feel are best and we’re always on the search for the healthiest and most technologically advanced products available.

That’s why we’re really excited about a new product we’ve started using made by British contact lens manufacturer Sau on, called Clariti1day Multifocal. After trying them out ourselves and with the help of our customers, Arbuthnot’s team of contact lens

What makes this product so fantastic is the material they’re made from; they’re the world’s rst daily disposable multifocal contact lenses made from silicone hydrogel. Also, very importantly, they protect the inside of your eyes with their UV protective lter. So, if you’ve got a big event coming up, maybe a party, a wedding or a Christmas get together, this could be the perfect reason to give them a whirl. Michele was inspired by the issues her daughter faced as she struggled nding products to suit the combination skin that so many of us encounter during this time of stress and hormonal change.

Michele has been busy making new stock for Christmas as well as creating a new range of cakes of soap (Rose, Lavender, Chamomile and Marigold). There is a range of vintage tea-cups lled with scented soya & beeswax candles, wrapped in Christmas cello and Christmas baubles and cones made out of soap.

Oh! Organics has been sponsored by the Welsh Government market scheme and will be at Cardi Christmas Market from 20th Nov – 24th Nov – Michelle hopes to see you there!

Whatever your age you’re never too old to start looking after your skin in the most natural way possible.

WORK LIFE IS A BEACH

W o r k L i f e i s a B e a c h b y T a n y a B r o o k s - D o w s e t tWow! Where has this year gone? Well I have certainly had an exciting and eventful 2012, so now I’m looking forward to some quality family time on a beach in warmer climates. Without wishing away the last few weeks of the year, I’m going to indulge in all things festive as nothing quite beats the excitement and apprehension running up to Christmas. Perhaps like me, you are almost ready for the work parties, family gatherings, writing your ‘to do’ lists and placing orders for the xmas trees, groceries and presents etc. In between the fun and zz there are many of us working right into the wee small hours on the 24th December. I know a couple of local business ladies that will be, so it was a real pleasure meeting up with Rhiannon from Rhiannon Thomas Illustrations and Debbie from Dear Doris to ask them what makes their work life a beach, especially around this time of year....

Which city/town did you move away from? Where are you based now?I lived overseas for some years, where the sea always played a prominent part in our lives. I now live close to the sea in Barry, and “ Dear Doris” is based in the beautiful Victorian seaside town of Penarth.

What profession did you leave behind?Initially I trained and worked as a state registered nurse in the UK. During my years abroad I became quite involved as a voluntary fundraiser (event organiser) for local, non-pro t charitable organisations.

Were you attracted to living/working by the coast? If so, why?I have always felt quite passionate about being near to the sea.As a child my Father was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy. My Mum and I joined him aboard the cargo vessels for several world voyages. Hence, my sea legs were formed, and a lifetime love a air with the sea begun. Later, my husbands’ work meant we could continue our strong connections to the sea. By choice, I would never like to be far away ....

Where did your business idea come from?I have always loved to combine beautiful items from the past (with a passion for a great auction), and mix them with more contemporary design led pieces. I guess my love of homemaking, and appreciation of a well-designed item, old or new, encouraged me to extend that idea and create the look which has evolved as “ Dear Doris”

What are your brief plans for the future?I am currently working with a talented local designer of Tinker design/Guestwho.biz to create a fresh, fun product, exclusive to “Dear Doris” and to build on our increasing line of quirky, traditional Welsh products not readily found on the high street. Further collaborations are planned in the near future.

Your favourite:

Beach: As I grew up in Rhoose, I have very fond memories of long, lazy summers there. I was also a member of the local lifeguard club, and married, Rhoose’s answer to the Hof! Hehe...

Beach essential: Got to be all about the skincare on that one, high factor sunscreen! To allow longer hours

Debbie Sweet from Dear Doris

basking ... and minimising the risk of sun damage!

What’s on your Christmas List this year? Two blissful weeks of holiday time with my lovely hubby and family....Oh, did I mention the Magimix 5200 XL food processor, please!

WORK LIFE IS A BEACH

Which city/town did you move away from? Where are you based now?I was born and bred in the Rhondda Valleys before moving to university when I was 18. Having always loved the coast, the decision to live and study at Swansea was more of a natural progres-sion than a well researched one. I love Swansea and I adore the Gower but 3 years later my other half and I decided to move to the pretty little seaside town of Penarth and it is there we have remained!

What profession did you leave behind?Having quali ed as an Archaeologist, I spent periods away with work, some-times only coming home at weekends. With such an unreliable source of work and income, I decided it was time at last that I work for myself and put a talent into practice. I quali ed many years ago as an Illustrator and other than a few sporadic commissions; I kept painting as a hobby. The decision wasn’t one I made lightly - there are lots of people trying to break into the industry, but with a little luck, a lot of work and a sti upper lip I think I may de nitely be on the right lines.

Were you attracted to living/working by the coast? If so, why?For me being close to the coast solves everything. It inspires, it de-stresses, it’s a means of keeping t and it’s healthy. I nd that when I spend any extended period of time away from the sea, I get agitated and yearn to get back. For art especially, the light, the smells, the col-ours and the ever-changing atmosphere is a great motivator. There really is noth-ing like working in your favourite place and coming home to the same.

Where did your business idea come from? The idea to be a self-employed illustra-tor was a dormant plan that was always with me. To be your own boss, to work with a variety of clients and to spend

all day every day creating and making a mess was a real motivation! What more could I ask for?! I had dabbled with illustration ‘part time’, but I soon realised that unless I truly committed, I’d never really know. For me, it was having the bravery to take the leap that started the ball rolling.

What are your brief plans for the future?I like to leave the future to itself. We can’t dictate what happens so it’s a good idea to work out the here and the now. Don’t get me wrong you need to prepare, but for me, I like to set the ball up and let it roll. It’s more interesting that way. For the immediate future, I have a client’s book to nish and a few of my own chil-dren’s books that I need to illustrate. I’d like to nd a publisher for my work and get a few books under my belt. If I can secure myself comfortably as a full time artist and a ord a bright blue beach hut to work from, I’m sure I’ll be content!

Your favourite:

Beach: Deciding my favourite beach is really hard for me, because I have so very many. For sur ng, I love ‘the Eleva-tor’ at Whitesands in Pembrokeshire, but for a co ee and to watch the sun set, you can’t beat Rhossili in the Gower.

Beach essential: My beach essential, and something that I’ve only recently learned to remember, is my camera. Clothes can be rolled up, shoes can come o , a woolly scarf can be bought on route and there’s an abundance of cafes to feed us but memories can only be caught once.

What’s on your Christmas list this year?A family Christmas and I’d love to be treated to a salon visit to give these beach worn locks a bit of TLC! Failing that, I’m in need of a new artists apron with enough pockets to hold all of my creative junk!

Justin and Christina have just celebrated their rst year on Plassey Street and love the extra space this new studio provides, as it has enabled them to create and expand a retail section. This is very important to them both as rm supporters of small businesses and artists – they are members of SiP (Shop in Penarth), a scheme designed to support small businesses in the town, encouraging people to shop locally and leave the car at home.

Many of the products Alley Cat sell are locally made, and are proving very popular. Tidal Dream Creation jewellery continues to be a rm favourite, and some beautiful artwork will be added to this line shortly. Newer arrivals include Rock Steady Charms jewellery and Crystal Candy jewellery, with items from both ranges making perfect stocking llers this Christmas. Another recent addition to the studio is a selection of Phil Hynes sculpts, which are wonderfully creative and distinctive, and include some zombie style magnets which are equally gorgeous and disgusting!

The studio is incredibly customer-focused, and Justin and Christina would like to thank their lovely clientele for their lasting support, and for ensuring they never have a dull day! Customers can (and do) bring in unusual and brilliant ideas which are turned into truly amazing tattoos. Recently they’ve had people drawing inspiration from dreams they’ve had,

What is a secured loan?

It’s simply a loan, secured on your property, which ranks behind your rst mortgage. For this reason, they are often referred to as second charges.

Lets say you own a property worth £250,000 and you have a mortgage of £150,000 – you therefore have equity of £100,000. You could borrow more against your property / equity in one of the following ways:

a. further advance from your current lenderb. new mortgage with a new lender (i.e. a re-mortgage for a higher amount)c. secured loan

Why take a secured loan?

If you’ve been refused a further advance or re-mortgage is the obvious answer. Lenders o ering secured loans are usually more exible in considering your circumstances than rst charge lenders - if you have a less than perfect credit record, a secured loan might be the answer.

But it’s not just credit-impaired clients that could bene t. If your existing mortgage is on a low rate, you may not want to re-mortgage the entire borrowing to a new lender, at what may be a higher rate. Or you may have redemption penalties to pay in order to take your mortgage away from your current lender. A secured loan avoids this, leaving the existing mortgage untouched, with the new loan secured behind it.

Of course there is always a downside. The loan is secured on

your property, so if you don’t keep up the repayments, you could lose your home, in the same way you would with your rst mortgage. If, for example, you used a secured loan to consolidate your credit card balances, you are turning unsecured debt into secured debt.

On the other hand, a secured loan is usually cheaper than an unsecured loan, simply because the lender has the security of your property.

Generally speaking, secured loan lenders will consider purposes that rst charge lenders wouldn’t. We’ve

recently arranged a secured loan for a client to pay o a personal tax bill – how many rst charge lenders would have considered that?

Friends of St. Augustine’s Church

Waltham House, Bradford Place, CF64 1AG

The Friends of St Augustine’s is an independent body, formed by church members and members of the wider community. All had one main aim – to ensure that this very special building is kept in good heart, ready to serve the community in Penarth for years to come – as a spiritual place of worship, as a place for community event and as one of Penarth’s most important buildings. The Friends are a 'not for pro t' charity, all funds raised by the Friends will go towards the maintenance of St Augustine’s church, its organ and churchyard.

• St Augustine’s,Penarth’s only Grade 1 listed building, is regarded as one of the best buildings by famous Victorian architect, William Butter eld

• The William Hill organ, built in 1895 is known as one of the best of its kind in the UK.

• St Augustine’s is home to Penarth’s war memorial.

• St Augustine’s is a remarkable landmark – particularly to sailors who have used it as a seamark for generations

The burden of maintaining a building the size of St Augustine’s is daunting, if not impossible for relatively small congregations, it needs money and on-going maintenance to preserve it and ensure its long- term survival.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

The Penarth Christmas Tree Festival has been held in St Augustine’s church since 2001. Over the years the festival, modelled on that held in the Hertfordshire town of Hitchin, has been a great success and has been adopted by many other churches in South Wales from Porthcawl to Caerphilly.

The format of the festival is simple: Christmas trees decorated by schools, business, families or individuals are displayed in St Augustine’s, a Grade 1 Butter eld gothic revival church. The festival takes place during the second weekend of December with all proceeds donated to nominated charities. Each year, the festival draws

Penarth Christmas Tree Festivalin excess of 1500 visitors and monies raised during the past years have totalled over £20000.

This year, the festival will begin Saturday 8th December with a children’s ‘Breakfast with Santa’ held in the church hall on Albert Road. Hot and cold refreshments will be available in the hall throughout the weekend, with stalls selling cakes and seasonal produce. The festival will culminate in an advent carol service on the evening of Sunday 9th December, while other music can be heard in the church over the festival weekend. We do hope anyone who has not already visited the festival will visit during this, its twelfth year.

Entry: £2.50 adults, £2.00 concessions, accompanied children free. Check for banners advertising the event in late November!

So, tell us about PPP physio:

At PPP we have a philosophy. It is to provide the best possible standard of evidence based assessment, diagnosis and treatment. We do this by employing the best physio’s, having the best premises, the best equipment and by providing longer treatment sessions.

How do you ensure that youhave the best physio’s?

I have previously worked with all the PPP physio’s. Only those who have particularly impressed me are invited to come and work at PPP. To join our team they must have the knowledge, skills and experience necessary, but importantly be friendly and professional . Most of our physio’s have Post-Graduate Quali cations in Physio. This means that their experience and decision making is at Masters level. PPP physio’s also work as Extended Scope Practitioners specialising in Spines or Knees. Each session is therefore as e ective as possible which should mean that fewer appointments are needed.

What sort of things do yourphysio’s treat?

Our musculoskeletal physio’s specialise in treating things like neck and back pain, all joint problems and sports injuries.

I’ve heard PPP physio’s have lots of experience in dealing with sports injuries:

Yes. I was physio for the Wales International Football Team for 6 years under John Toshack. I now look after the U21’s. I’ve also been the Cardi Rugby Club physio for the past 13 seasons and I also help out with the Cardi Blues when I’m needed. Andy Shea also works for the Cardi Blues and Chris Lambert works for the Blues Academy and worked at the London Olympics. Kath Walker has a specialist interest in running injuries and writes for Runners World.

What treatment options are available?

We use joint manipulation and mobilisation, soft tissue work, electrotherapy and acupuncture. The type of treatment you receive is determined by your diagnosis and the most evidence based and e ective way of treating it. Everybody will also be given some movement and strengthening exercises and often postural advice as this always forms a really important part of the recovery process.

Where do your referrals come from?

Most people self-refer however a lot of Orthopaedic Consultants and GP’s refer to us because of our reputation for clinical excellence. GP’s know that the wait for NHS physio is often several months so they frequently recommend that their patients come and see us whilst they are on the NHS waiting list as this often means that they get better straight away instead of their injuries or pain becoming chronic.

Why have you chosen to be in Penarth View?

Some of our patients travel from far a eld to come to PPP. We want the people of Penarth to know that they have one of the nest Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinics in South Wales on their doorstep.

As our forty third year in Penarth draws to an end, (and hasn’t it own by?) we thought we would give our views on the current market conditions in the town, and what we feel is in store for 2013. It has certainly been another mixed year in the housing market across the country, with the increasing property prices in London seemingly driving a slight increase in house prices nationwide. There are clearly regional variations, however, and not every area has experienced the same positive market. In Penarth we are lucky. The style, size and age of properties we have along with the excellent schools and the constantly improving town centre mean that the area remains very popular. Young couples and small families want to move into

Penarth, and we also have people looking to buy within the town in all parts of the market, from rst time buyers, to those looking to downsize from the larger Victorian and Edwardian properties. As a result, sales have been generally good this year, prices have remained steady and Penarth even featured at number nine on the top ten list of property hot-spots in the UK according to recent gures published by Lloyds TSB using Land Registry sales gures. This does not mean to say that the market is buoyant throughout, but signs are certainly more positive than negative.

We don’t see any reason why these trends shouldn’t continue into the new year. The national nancial outlook is still uncertain, but with so much great property in Penarth, and so many reasons for people to move to the area, we are positive that 2013 will be as steady as 2012.

In 1964 the Club received the ultimate recognition: they attained the prestigious full membership of the Welsh Rugby Union, the elite body that even today encompasses only 230 Clubs. 1964 is also the year that their current premises were opened on St Mark’s Road, which led to an in ux of close to 500 members, a massive gain for the Club.

The most iconic part of The Old Penarthians’ legacy has to be the

annual Sevens tournament. It was introduced in 1950 by Bill Whitaker, who – as Secretary of the Club from 1949 to 1961, after previously captaining the team – dedicated himself to establishing the Penarthian name, now highly respected in Welsh rugby circles. The tournament is staged on the third Saturday in May each year, and is not only the longest running Sevens tournament in Wales (a fantastic achievement in itself ), but is also widely regarded as the most popular. Rugby enthusiasts and even international and other leading players, both past and present, are frequently seen engaging in the passion of the game and competition, and enjoying the friendly atmosphere, team spirit and fellowship that comes with such a unique and special event. Whatever your age or ability, there

is a group for every rugby player in Penarth, from the new but keen eight year old girl right up to the Veterans! The Mini and Junior Sections comprise groups for the under 8s, 9s, 11s and 12s which are very popular – the Club now has 150 girls and boys playing! There are also three Senior sides, including the Veterans XV. The experienced coaches are all WRU quali ed, and the Club boasts rst class playing facilities, including a oodlit training area and convenient

changing rooms on site. Furthermore, a full year Rugby Membership is just £10!

If rugby isn’t your thing but you’re still looking for a fun way to keep t, the Club now has two squash courts, as well as their excellent gym facilities. A year’s Squash Membership is a very competitive £45, with the convenience of such a nearby location another de nite plus.

The Club additionally functions as a great social venue, and plays a vital role in our community. The friendly atmosphere encompasses a lounge, bar and patio area, pool table and skittle alley, for those more relaxing of pastimes! It hosts a quiz on the last Friday of every month which is increasingly popular, and an

entertaining evening where you can indulge in your drink of choice and some friendly rivalry!

The Old Penarthians has begun a massive development plan in order to further improve their facilities, in particular the roof and the building’s interior. To help this cause, a central feature of Penarth’s history and contemporary culture, they will be hosting a number of fundraising events and encouraging everybody to

get involved. The Club needs to raise £250,000, and thanks in advance all their loyal supporters, both old and new.

The Club is always on the lookout for new members, both for rugby and the social side of things, and with so much on o er their appeal attracts people from all walks of life. The famous local derby between the team and Penarth RFC will be played once more on Boxing Day, and is certainly an experience not to be missed!

The Historic Old Penarthians RFCThe Old Penarthians Rugby club started life in December 1923, as the Penarth County School Old Boys Association, playing hockey, cricket and rugby. After initial successes, the Old Boys Association lost much of its early impetus. However, the rugby section continued to gather momentum, and in 1938, the decision was made to separate the rugby club from the Association and to operate under the present title of Old Penarthians RFC.
