Shopping in Penarthis a green affair…

GPG is a community organisation devoted to encouraging people to think about climate change, and it is doing so in rather unusual ways.

What on earth is the connection between shopping locally and reducing carbon emissions people ask. “Everything”, says GPG which launched its loyalty card scheme back in September.

The Shop in Penarth (SiP) scheme now has 50 participating businesses in and around Penarth.

“If people shop locally, they leave the car at home and they will be buying a lot of stuff sourced locally”. The green connection is simple – shop locally and cut the carbon.

The (SiP) card, bought for a £1, entitles the holder to many discounts and offers available through the scheme. SiP is not only green, it is very good for Penarth and Penarth people.

It is supportive of local business and for the growing number of locals who can see that if they don’t use their shops, cafes etc., quite soon they will lose them.

“It’s simple”, said Duncan Lewis who has run Sadlers Fish and Game shop for over 48 years “use us or lose us”.

GPG agrees and says that without local support Penarth could quite soon become just a carbon copy of hundreds of other small towns – an identikit town with supermarkets and none of the individual characteristics that make a place like Penarth so unique.

Quite apart from the fun of finding out what is on offer – many of the businesses change their offers monthly – shoppers can really save on their shopping.

Offers differ widely - from 10% off certain foods in one shop to 15% off quality handbags in another.

Tricia Griffiths, chair of GPG is delighted with the way people have taken to the scheme.

“We want this to work for everyone – residents, visitors, businesses and for the environment. Climate change is a serious subject, but a lot people ignore it because it is too big to think about.

This way, people are helping themselves, helping the town, the local economy and the planet. Without much effort they find themselves involved, and that is a good feeling”.

Many people always shop locally but for many others the experience is quite new and enjoyable. People seem surprised, said one butcher, that we can help them choose the right cut of meat for a particular dish – and we know where our meat comes from.

So in this period of austerity and cuts can we afford to shop in Penarth? No doubt, say GPG members.

They believe that planning a shop and buying what you actually need means less wastage – and less rubbish to sort for recycling – something else GPG is rather keen on!

GPG has other projects which may tempt readers such as the community orchard and community gardens projects, a garden share scheme (Plotshare), and more.

OPENING TIMESTuesday – Friday:10.00am – 5.00pm

The Bespoke Process

With a combination of state of the art technology and traditional jewellery making techniques, Northern Star Jewellery can create a unique piece of jewellery suited to your personal style and budget however extravagant or modest it may be.

Aided by the CAD Matrix system, which is a thoroughly comprehensive jewellery design tool, Northern Star Jewellery can put together a series of 3D computer generated images. These will then be fine tuned according to your requirements, to create your own individual piece of jewellery.

The final design file is then emailed to a casting company in London who will first grow a wax model of the piece. This is then cast in the material of your choice, and returned to us in a raw state. The casting is then cleaned up and each individual diamond is set and finished by hand to the highest standard.

Matthew, who by trade is a specialist gem setter, has more than ten years bench experience and has carried out work for the some of the finest jewellers from Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, to London before setting up his own business in Penarth.

Matthew studied Illustration and Multimedia at the highly regarded Leeds College of Art and Design, where he specialised in 3D Computer Aided Animation, with particular focus on creating and manipulating 3D virtual objects.

He then spent five years working for one of the UK’s largest jewellery manufacturers, developing goldsmith’s skills before specialising in gem setting.

Since moving to Penarth five years ago he has now set up his own workshop and has set gems and finished high end jewellery for many of the top class jewellers from all across the UK, as well as working on individual bespoke items.

Matthew holds a licence for the CAD Matrix system which has enabled him to combine his design and stone setting skills to be able to create intricate and stunning jewellery.

Unique Bespoke Designs

Matthew has an expertise that is unrivalled and unique in this part of Wales. Whether you want an engagement, wedding ring or a set of associated designed jewellery, Matthew will give you his knowledge and experience in making the perfect piece of jewellery for you. From start to finish, Matthew’s expertise will keep you informed of the whole process, advising what is best with honesty and sincerity.

Stone Replacement Service

As well as designing and manufacturing bespoke jewellery Matthew operates a stone replacement service. He is able to source replacement stones that have been damaged; lost or disfigured and can then set them into your jewellery, restoring it to its original form.

As well as a replacement service, Matthew is able to source and supply stones for new pieces.

Why Choose Northern Star Jewellery?

Matthew’s acquisition of skills sets him apart from all other jewellers. From start to finish you will be taken on a journey of integrated jewellery design that will enable you to have a piece of bespoke jewellery that is unique to you and you alone. Along with that, Matthew’s honesty, integrity and advice will help make the process enjoyable with an everlasting piece of jewellery that will last more than a lifetime.

Since its change of name and move across Cornerswell road in June, Strandz Hair & Beauty has continued to grow from strength to strength.

Strandz grew from the well known Alan’s, and has a customer base going back four generations. It is an authorised Goldwell salon, providing a first class range of professional hair and beauty solutions which are not available on the high street. As one of the team of nine trained staff, Alan himself is still working at the salon.

“We have been established for more than 30 years now, and during this time we have built up a first class reputation which we’re very proud of,” says owner Michele Gonthier.

“We offer a dedicated and professional service to every one of our valued customers, and always at the most reasonable prices.

“We are always looking to add new services to offer customers. Our most recent addition is Great Lengths hair extensions, which are fantastic for weddings, parties and special occasions.

“Two of our staff have been professionally trained to apply the extensions, and two more will be trained soon. You can achieve a wide range of looks using extensions, from a simple strip of colour to a whole head of long hair, so they’re very versatile.”

Beauty news

“With over 30 years of experience in the beauty industry you can rest assured that our services are of the highest quality,” says Michele. “We use Goldwell products and training and we aim for 100 per cent customer satisfaction on every level.”

Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two, a night out with friends, a birthday or

“This festive season we are offering traditional Christmas fare plus something a bit different,” says owner Darren Beddis. “At Mediterraneo you’ll be spoilt for choice. As well as turkey and Welsh beef there’s a delicious selection of authentic Italian and Mediterranean flavours prepared from the finest fresh ingredients by our talented head chef and his creative team.

“As always, if you need anything different or extra special, give us a call as we are sure we can create exactly what you need.”

capturing the joy

Special occasions deserve special mementoes, and a set of beautiful photographs is a wonderful way to preserve thememories forever.

Penarth photographer Monique Green, owner of The Studio in Stanwell Road, has a sensitive and intensely personal approach to creating these memories.

“When I’m taking a photo I look for joy,” says Monique. “When you see it, it’s beautiful, breathtaking. I’m so lucky to be invited to some of the most important moments of people’s lives: weddings, golden anniversary celebrations, a child’s early days.

“All these things are about the people we love and the joy they bring to us, so I aim to capture just that.”

The Studio is a family business, not part of a chain. Monique’s husband Mike is also a highly skilled photographer, working with corporate clients as well as individuals in his own business, Momentum.

“I’m a mother and I understand about families,” says Monique. “Every family is different, so I treat each group individually to get the best out of their shoot. I take family portraits with everyone together and also shots with just the children on their own.”

Contemporary portrait photography has come a long way since the days of stiffly posed family groups, and Monique offers flexibility in terms of the style customers might prefer for their photographs.

“I can do the traditional ‘studio’ shoots and also we can go out on location for people who would prefer a more natural look to their photos.

08

“Whether in the studio or elsewhere, I love what I do, it’s such a buzz,” says Monique.

Depending on your preference, customers can choose from a photobook, traditional framed prints, items from the new acrylic range such as an acrylic block or acrylic sandwich, or canvas. Each order is tailored to your taste and budget so what you take home is as individual as you are.

There are only eight piers remaining in Wales and fewer still can lay claim to a building as striking as the Pavilion at the landward end of Penarth Pier.

Along with community organisations, (and with help from Heritage Lottery Fund and the Vale of Glamorgan Council), the charity Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd is running the campaign to re-open the Pavilion to the public as a learning and community centre. It’s your Pavilion, and we need your help to raise the money needed for this exciting project!

organisation leading the town’s bid. This money has already enabled PACL to commission a variety of research on the economic impact of the project, potential growth for tourism, financial feasibility and building studies.

The project has also had great support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, with a firm commitment of £800,000 and in November it received approval from the Welsh Assembly Government and Big Lottery Fund to proceed with its bid for another £700,000. All this strengthens the Pavilion’s chance to secure a main grant of £1.6 million from the HLF, due for decision in the spring of 2011.

A community fundraising drive is now underway with a target of £50,000 and there will be a variety of events over the following months involving local groups, businesses and residents all helping to make the Pavilion project a reality.

Get involvedwith the Penarth Pier Project and help us restore the Penarth Pavilion to its former glory.

What’s happening in the new Pavilion? After a stroll along the pier or a cruise on a paddle steamer there will be a choice of cinema programmes or a meal in one of several restaurants. On weekends there will be concerts along with afternoon tea dances, tours of the building, and perhaps a talk on an aspect of the Pavilion’s reconstruction or, in keeping with its special position on the Bristol Channel, a maritime or environmental exhibition to visit.

The Pavilion will house all kinds of information about the natural and social history of the area and about stories of the community and the Pavilion itself, which was a centre of town activity 70 years ago.

Everyone will be invited to leave their story connected with the Pavilion and the Pier and they will be kept up to date on special events through the year.

From the moment it opens, schools and colleges will use the Pavilion as an important resource in their work on the sea and natural life, energy, and the area’s amazing tidal power.

Funding newsThe top priority now is to secure funding which will enable the grand reopening of the Pavilion in early 2013.

Much of the work so far has been supported by a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Project Planning Grant given to Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL) the

The group joins Project director Maggie Knight along with PACL Trustees, a strong contingent of volunteers bringing much-needed expertise in many fields and officers from the Vale of Glamorgan Council who are giving invaluable support.

The Project has also been able to take advice from professionals within education, design, business and heritage to build a programme to make the Pavilion an exciting dynamic venue. We are delighted that the international conductor (and Penarth resident), Carlo Rizzi, has become our first project Patron.

Others who have ties with Penarth and wish to see the Pavilion restored and used again by the whole community are starting to join him.

With the winter season on our doorstep, why not pop into Pura Vida Boardriders for all your gifts and watersports essentials.

First established as a surf board shaping brand in 1995 by Penarth local Jim Brooks-Dowsett, Pura Vida Boardriders has quickly become the nucleus for the South Wales windsurfing community. Fuelled by his passion for all things water-bound, Jim has diversified the store into a haven for all watersport fanatics and lovers of surf scene clothing.

Remaining true to the Pura Vida ethos, this family-run business stays away from mainstream brands and instead stocks some of the best alternative clothing available, such as the bold and artistic Syke, O’Shea, Ion and of course their own line of merchandise.

Pura Vida has also become the ‘official test centre’ for windsurfing’s leading brands. Stocking hardware to suit all abilities, Pura Vida also offers windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboard tuition that accommodates absolute beginners to those who simply want refresher courses or to advance their skills.

“These days you don’t have to be a diehard surfer to enjoy your local surf shop. On the contrary, Pura Vida has something to offer the whole family,” says Jim. “We offer stand-up paddleboarding lessons, equipment hire, free expert advice on all our new and used equipment as well as school talks and demonstrations.

“Whether you’re male or female, young or ‘young at heart’, we have something to offer you,” says Jim. As well as Jim and his wife Tanya, Pura Vida’s manager Rhiannon is always on hand to help.

What’s in stock?

In addition to the equipment, Pura Vida has a range of clothing, sunglasses, unique watches, professional watersport cameras and surf-style jewellery – not to mention an ever-increasing hoard of quirky surfboard rugs, Burt’s Bees skincare products and DVDs.

With a vast selection of seasonal promotions, payment schemes and customised gear it’s no wonder Pura Vida is quickly becoming the ‘go to’ place for all things surf. Pura Vida Boardriders also rewards its customers with a Free Loyalty Card, giving you 10% off everything in store – every time you shop!

Get on board!

“Check out the website and be sure to warm up with a coffee at our store in Penarth (opposite Tesco Express). We look forward to seeing you soon!” says Jim.

The Skin Studio is one of Penarth’s newest businesses and it has been welcomed with open arms by its increasing band of customers. The Skin Studio officially opened in August 2010, when sisters Natalie and Marijanna Price teamed up to combine their expertise in the health and beauty market sectors to offer a complete inside-and-out wellbeing experience.

Natalie is a qualified advanced beauty therapist while Marijanna’s background is in the public health sector, where she became a qualified L3 Advanced Personal Trainer and Nutritionist. Combining their specialist nutrition and fitness and beauty skills together, Natalie and Marijanna developed the concept of The Skin Studio.

“We’re offering a tailored focus for every customer, educating them in health and wellbeing as well as advising on and providing beauty treatments of all kinds,” Natalie explains.

“Customers receive the best available practice and standards on beauty treatments such as facials, anti-ageing treatments, hair removal and targeted weight loss. Depending on the individual client’s needs, that advice can then be developed to focus on designing an advanced programme of health and wellbeing and explaining the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle.

“For example, a client who has successfully lost weight from a target zone through a course of i–Lipo laser treatment may want further advice on a balanced diet and exercise programme,” says Natalie.

“Some people need to lose weight, for others it may be simply that they want to live more healthily, or to find out about increasing their energy levels or about the effects of antioxidants and sun protection factors.

“After a thorough skin and body diagnosis, we will devise a course of treatments for every customer as an individual – and we confidently offer a money-back guarantee,” Natalie explains.

The advanced skin and body diagnostic machine analyses problems such as pigmentation, open pores and sunshine exposure. A programme is then developed that best suits the characteristics and needs of your skin. If required, a planned nutritional and exercise programme that can be followed at home or in one-on-one sessions with Marijanna will also be created.

“Many local clients have told us how happy they are that we have opened in Penarth so they don’t have to go into Cardiff for treatments, and we are attracting customers from further afield in West Wales and Bristol as well. Marijanna and I are very pleased with how well received The Skin Studio has been and we’re looking forward to the next few months,” says Natalie.

Christmas is a happy time for celebrating, seeing family and friends, and doing lots of cooking, eating and drinking, with the beautifully decorated tree twinkling away in the corner.

After they’ve all gone home, and the tree decorations and tinsel have been put away, however, the house might not be looking its pristine best. Food and drink spills, Christmas tree needles, glitter and just the effect of lots of people being in the house will all have left their mark.

That’s when you will want to call Graham Linnard at Cor Cleaning.

“We will clean your carpets, curtains, windows and even your hard-working oven, so they look like new again,”says Graham.

In the cleaning business for more than 10 years, Graham prides himself on providing a cost-effective and guaranteed quality of service.

“If any marks reappear after cleaning we’ll return and do the job again, free.
