OUR OPEN HOUSE

If you missed it you missed a lovely, sunny day with lots of new friends· and many old, and our shop looking it's sparkling best. The sparkle was provided was provided by a jovial hard working crew, most of them you have seen on the "who done list" before. Vern Mc Cullough, Bill Walsh, Ida Claflin, Del Peterson, Roman and Viola Groves, Max Unland, Judge Ewing, Bill and Janice Garcia, Vic La Follette, Ron Hasemeyer, Lloyd Canfield, Al Richter, Dan Dineen, and Ednah Antunovich.

We had a case depieting most of the things we do, and teach at our shop that looked good enough to put into a show. The workmanship was a group effort, Jewelry, carvings, faceting, minerals, silversmithing, channel jewelry, flat lapping. Vern Mc Cullough, Patti Gillespie, Ron Hasmeyer, Audrey Azevedo, Max Unland, Arnold Barron, Bill Walsh \Jic LA Follette, Valda Mc Thorn, Jim Bishop and I filled the case.

Our demonstrators had crowds around them most of the time, and have gotten some new students to learn their crafts, Darlene Pasquini, with carving, JAmie Mc Donald with square wire jewelry, Ed Rigor with lost wax, Larry Osborn with slate carving, Aaron Bronneman, cabbing, Bill Reynold and Amy DeVoe with flat lapping, Fern Brown, Dan Dineen, Vic LaFollete and Al Richter with faceting.

A special thankg goes to John Gullak for acquiring and cooking the hot dogs and their fixings. They sure were good, and of course our members provided the rest of our well known CUlSlne. The only thing left over was stuffed eggs!

Thanks to all of you for helping make this a very happy occasion.

DINOSAUR DAYS

Travel back in time 65 million years. Step into a world dominated by a giant, swaying Apatosurus or a growling fifteen foot tall Tyrannosaurus. Until May 31, Lawrence Hall of Science takes you back to the Mesozoic Era, through special exhibits, lectures, and films. This is a great event.

While there Visit the work rooms, and have a cup of coffee in the cafeteria for the most breathtaking view of the bay I have ever seen. To make this a more enjoyable event take a child with you.

I'll leave all additional information on the shop bulletin board.

PETROGRAPH 4 MAY 1985

TO THE HINERAL AND GEM SOCIE'rY OF CASTRO VALLEY:

About four years ago. Jean Pfefer and I offered to compile

resumes for the past presidents from back issues of the Petrograph"

As we started our search for activities of the past presidents, •

we found that many of our long standing members had contributed

much that needed to be recognized o As we embarked on this idea,

we also found that many of our ~ew members needed to be remembered,

so one thing led to another until now g four.years later we have

finally finished the project that we startedo We have faithfully

gleaned all of the past Petrographs that we could find to make

a list of activities, long term committments, achievements and

participation as club officers, instructors, board members, trophy

and ribbon winners of those members who appearea in the pages of

the Petrograph. Many issues were missing - some full years and

other individual issues, so that we cannot claim that this effort

is definitive for all people who should be included0

If we have left anyone out who should have been included, we

sincerely a?oligize and relate that this was by no means

intended, " but we had no other source than the Petrograph ..

~'le request that those of you who have been left ou; make a resume

of your own and include it in the book that has been compiled for

this purpose" \ie also hope that those of you who do have a

resume started, will be responsible for keeping it current"

Besides doing resumes for members g Je~n has collected books of

minutes of board and membership meetings, Treasurers reports and

Profiles plus miscellaneous materialso

ive want to thank Gale and Laura Fangel, Glenna and George Stephens,

Phil and Maurita Clarke g and Hazel and Felix Pinza for donating

their past issues of the Petrograph and Edith Jensen for a metal

file that she donated to The Club"

1'le have enjoyed doing this project, but never never want to do

it again"

Sincerelyu Louise Palmer

This is another of synthetics created by the flame fusion process, and used in June 30 thru July 6 Davis Creek laser productions. It has also been grown in a crystal from. All thru the North Bay Field Trip Coop.

The hardness and refractive index makes it a very desireable gem material. Orien~ation is not necessary. Sawing and preforming is easy.

I cut two stones with this material, one at 6 mm BaTion Square and one 12 mm Barion variation. (pattern will be available at our facetors workshop May 1). I found this material a joy to cut and polish. It turned out a beautiful stone. I polished on ceramic with 50,000 diamond. But, I would imagine any of the laps using diamond would work.

We will have some of this material at our General Meeting 'at the auction for our Scholarship fund.

Be there!

Maps are on the bulletin board at the shop, and further information will be in the Petrograph, and posted at the shop.

Oil of cinnamon and oil of cassia, sold by drug stores by the ounce have a refractive index near that of most stones. When you submerge a stone in the oil, the surface irregularities vanish and you see the flaws and inclusions.

BRUNEAU CANYON

From the Oregon Agate and Mineral Society, Portland Oregon. The Bureau of Land Management is proposing the Bruneau and Jarbidge River area in southwestern Idaho, important to rockhounds, be declared Wilnerness Areas. The proposal includes 20,389 acres in the King Hill Wilderness Study area, and 17,929 acres in the Jarbidge River Study Area, including rim to rim on the 8runeau Canyon. Present valid mines would be allowed under stringent supe~visi8n. All public access roads would be closed. The reason? to protect 25 Big Horn Shleep, the sheep having been introduced into the area some years ago.

This is an interesting area for rock collecting and also historically. The old irrigation system, built by the Chinese in the late 1890s in order to raise fresh vegetables is still visible. This is not an area that anyone over 35 years of age is going to Visit, carrying a back pack. With so many acres under consideration, enough acres to allow the Rockhound access and prosepecting area, we should be granted at least equal consideration with the sheep!

Comments were sent to Boise, however, at this printing, nothing~is known of the outcome.

The Trinity River and the numerous tributary sqeams affo=rd tl',"(nrt, En::'eelhead, and salmon fishing. Hikers and packpackers will finq many beautiful hiking trails into the Trinity Alps. Weaverville itself has unique and historical points of interest which include:

1. Th~ Joss House- - perhaps the best preserved Chinese Temple of worship in the United States.

2. The Jake Jackson Historical Museum-.-one of the finest "gold rush days" museums in the state.

3. The small town of Weaverville is a unique experience in itself as it is one of the few gold rush towns which has managed to preserve a true turn of the century western atmosphere including spiral staircases on Main Street, an authentic early 1900's soda fountain, etc. A quiet stroll along Main Street will provide memories to last a long time.

There will be approximately 150 no-fee parking spots for self-contained R.V. 's (no hook-ups) within Lowden Park which will be apportioned on a "first come--first serve" basis. Restroom facilities available. There are approximately 40 Forest Service camps in the Weaverville District as well as several private parks for "overniters". Also Weaverville has a number of motels.

Campers, dealers and tailgaters may set up Friday, May 24. Tailgaters merchandise must pertain to the rock and mineral hobby.

For GEMBOREE information contact show Coordinator, Jim Ramsaur, Box 1497, Weaverville, Ca., 96093 (916) 623-5116 or write P.O. Box 159, Weaverville, Calif. 96093. Interested gold working or mining equipment dealers or manufacturers contact Randy McKenna of Trinity Mining Supply, Box 1053, Weaverville, Ca. 96093 (916) 623-4426, General Coordinator of gold mining exhibits and workshops.

Vic & Cleo La Follette went to Quartzite for their Pow Wow. On the way home they ran into some old friends. Ben & Virginia Owens, and Phyllis and Bob Calvert.

Be careful on the freeways, U Turn Dora is back in town. We've just about convinced her to be Field Trip C~ordinator again.

New member Damon Sao is learning decorative sandblasting on glass as well as cabbing and jewelry making.

Rose Rodrighes was putting the finishing polish on her first beautiful cab when it flew across the room and broke. That really hurts.

Arnold Barron is becoming a slate carver.

Jim Bishop's son was just promoted to Commander.

Phil and Maurita Clarke were at the Open House. Phil is slimming down and looked good.

Gene and Ed Hanzel are still traveling.

Richard and Doris Bush were at the Open House too, It was really nice to see him up here.

Ron Hasemeyer found some bargains in machinery and rocks, even some Bruneau jasper slabs. I think

. he has a terminal case of Rock Pox.

MAY 1985 "PEGBOAROERS" A TALE FOR FACETERS

"Pegboarders" -- now isn't that a fascinating, strange name? Well, these are the Tacts as learned by P.O. Griffin of the Marin Mineral Society.

It seems that many a moon ago when electtricity was unknown, over there in Europe they were using a "Jampeg" overall and a "pegboard" then was not as popular This Jampeg resembles an overgorwn golf tee with holes in it and the pegboard is very much like owr moder day Masonite pegboards, only on a much smaller scale and about I' times thicker.

The holes in th~ pegboard could run as many as twelve ~~rbss and twelve down, each at a different angle. In these holes, in turn, tihe would put a pointed dop stick. The ~eviation of the dop stick would deteFmine the elevation angle of each row of facets, while the rotation is controlled by hand.-

Originally the lap was turned by water, (which is still the way it is done in some places) or by a sewing machine~like treadle. Once electDicity came along many people converted to the easier way of faceting stdnes.

The original "Pelgiboarders" Club was for men only. As time passed women were allowed to become "Pegboarders" too but one qualificatioh was that you had to know how to use the machine and had to facet a stone by using the machine.

Any',ohe interested in furthing their education about "Pegboarders" can refer to John Sinkankas "A Lapidary's Manual 2nd edition. A picture of the Jampeg is on page 131 & 132.

SPECIAL AWARDS PROGRAM FOR MAY COMING EVENTS

lJJhat will it be: Grammy Awards; Os cars ; May 3, 4, 5 Snyder Ranch Pow Wow Valley Springs or Emmys?? We will recognize our outstanding

members at this meeting for all thaty they have done for the club in the years they have been members. These are the leaders who have kept us going, made us stronger, helped over the hard lumps, and kept Castro Valley always at the top. Each May, we take time to give out s~ecial awards to those who have given service to their club -over and above the call of duty. There are so many IJJho have done so much for our club that it is difficult to choose. We hope we have not hurt any feelings, or made any grevious erros. Jack DeVoe, Halen Miguel, and Vern Korstad were on the selection committee. Those we do not get this year, we i.lJi11 get to next year.

Now as to the awards, we will call them: the HGemmyll Awards; "The G8ld Nuggets" and the "Diamonds in the Rough". Come out and see who gets what. Who knows, you too, may be a Diamond in the Rough.

TIPS FOR OPAL OWNERS

The best way to keep opal jewelry from cracking and crazing is to wear it. Opal picks up moisture form the body necessary to keep it in good condition. If it is necessary to store opal~ it should not be cushioned in something like dry absorbant cotton.

I~stead, opal should be ~ut in an airtight jar with a copule of wet cotton balls in it. Don't store opals in a bank vault; pressuring in the vault tends to separate the layers.

In air travel, take the opal with you; do not let it go in the baggage hold. If the prongs are too tight in the setting the opal wil eventually crack.
