o Move out of your comfort zone

o Encourage conversation by breaking bread with people

o Surprise them - write, call a loved one

o Be devoted – pray the rosary, light candle

o Be a grateful person

o Ask, how is it that I am so blessed?

This Wednesday, we will have a Communion Service in lieu of school Mass. This is due to the archdiocesan priests being on retreat, and the lack of Catholic priests. More information on this is found in The Spiritual Corner of the newsletter.

This Friday, we will recognize all Veterans and those currently serving in the Armed Services at 2:30 p.m. in the church. All are welcome, especially those who wore or are still wearing the uniform.

Media and Your Child

Our children’s connection to media is everywhere, coming from more sources and more screens than we probably remember when we were kids: TV, movies, video games, handheld games, computers, cell phones, i-Pads, i-Pods, watches, etc.

There are many wonderful uses for media that provide conveniences and education for us and our families. There are also dangers in media use that, as parents and educators, we are tasked to protect our children from. With all the amazing advances in

technology, we cannot forget to make advances in how we protect children from media that is not age-appropriate.

It’s important to remember that children’s brains are not fully developed, specifically the part of the brain (pre-frontal cortex) responsible for critical thinking, judgement, problem-solving and impulse control. When a child or adolescent views media showing violence, inappropriate content, or harmful stereotypes, their own ideas, feelings and behaviors are impacted. Without some guidance from a trusted adult, repeated exposure to these kinds of media may lead to an increase in aggression and a decrease in empathy.

For more information and research about media use and children, please visit: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research.

Quick tips for setting media guidelines:

*Limit the amount of screen time to 1-2 hours a day (or less if you notice it is negatively impacting your child).

*Model screen-free times/activities (like dinner time, for example).

*Keep children’s bedrooms free of screen media (no TV, game systems, laptops, i-Pads, cell phones, etc.)

*Preview media that your child is interested in before you allow them to view/play it.

*Co-view media (if appropriate) with your child and discuss the content-this will help them develop critical thinking skills.

*Do your research about social media websites (like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and closely monitor their usage. Remember, these sites are typically for ages 13 and up.

*Stick to rating recommendations. They exist for a reason.

*Use your parental judgement. Your children are counting on you to set their limits!

What is a Communion Service?

Many of you may know what a Communion Service is; however, for those of us who don't, I will give a brief explanation of what it is. It is not a Mass, but it includes a procession with song, the penitential act which is the I Confess to almighty God...followed by the Liturgy of the Word. Then the deacon may give a homily. If he doesn't, we go right into the prayers of the faithful. So far we have been following the same format as a Mass. After the prayers of the faithful is when we notice a change; there is no Eucharistic Prayer, meaning there is no Consecration because we do not have a priest who alone receives this power through the graces of his ordination to the priesthood. Now the deacon invites us all to stand for the Communion Rite. It is now that we pray the prayer that Jesus taught us, (The Our Father). After which we have the sign of peace and then the distribution of Holy Communion. Choir sings during this time. After Receiving Holy Communion, the deacon leads us in the Concluding Rites, which includes a blessing to send us forth to be Jesus to all whom we meet along our way. The closing hymn is now sung as our Communion Service comes to an end.

Box Tops for Education

On Monday, October 30th, I announced the winner(s) of the Box Tops for Education Classroom Pizza Party Contest. The contest was so close for the two 4th grade classes, that the teachers and I ruled it a tie.

The days leading up to the end of the contest, the students really put the pressure on one another to bring in box tops. Mrs. Tackett and Mrs. Speakmon also joined in on the fun and they both loaded the Bonus Box Tops App on their phones, which led them to earn hundreds of e-box tops. A few parents decided to help out and also loaded the app to help lead their children’s classrooms to victory. What started out as a usual competition with students and adults duking it out, so to speak, it was teamwork and determination that led these two classes to accomplish something great for our school. They managed to earn just over$400 for OLPH Catholic School. Kudos to the students, teachers, and parents who participated!

Thank you to ALL students, teachers, and parents who submitted box tops this quarter. Every pink box top earns us $.10.

Maricela Garcia’s Pre K class won an ice cream party for collecting the most box tops in the CDC.

Please continue to clip and save box tops for OLPH. The next Box Tops contest is scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving Break. It will be a Christmas Raffle. April/May is the next Pizza Party Box Tops Contest.

Who Loves Mrs. Santini?

By Sierra Bower and Ophelia Murphy

Most of us know one of our first grade teachers,

Mrs. Santini. She has been a teacher here for 25

years and she says that every year feels like her

first year. She heard that OLPH was a great school

and wanted to start teaching here. First grade is

her favorite grade to teach. Some of her teaching

tactics include being silly, funny, and using a lot of

manipulatives. She spends a lot of time preparing

her lesson plans. Her favorite subject to teach is

Religion. But what is most important to her are her

students, and each one holds a place in her heart.

Her favorite restaurant is Texas Roadhouse

because she loves the steak and bread. In her free

time, she loves to paint, go to the movies and read.

Last but not least, people wonder why she loves

frogs so much. It is because one day she saw a

cute little green frog and fell in love with it.

Dog Week: The Labrador Retriever

“Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School builds character and shapes tomorrow's leaders by delivering academic excellence in a Catholic faith based community.”

Hi, and welcome to Dog Week. This week we have the Labrador retriever. The Labrador retriever is a hunting dog called the lab for short. The lab is one of the most kind-hearted dogs around and has a special type of fur which helps it glide through water to retrieve killed prey. The Labrador comes in many colors.

Even though they are all cute, the chocolate is our favorite. The Labrador retriever originates from Ireland. They were originally bred to be rescue dogs, but because of their playful nature and hunting antics they are now considered to be pet/hunting dogs. They are also used as seeing eye dogs. Since labs have such good noses they are also security dogs who look for bombs in the mail.

Poptropica Original By: Sofia Szinnyey

You may be wondering, how old is Poptropica? What is it? Poptropica is a game you can play on phones, computers, tablets and other technology. Is it educational? Poptropica is a virtual world where kids, anywhere from about 8 to 15, can explore and play while learning strategy skills. Poptropica is 100% kid friendly! No personal information is needed to play! Poptropica takes several steps to ensure children's safety online. Also, all character interaction is carefully controlled by pre-selected dialogue. Unlike other online games, you can't share any personal information. To interact with other players, you can challenge them to games.

There are 40+ different games you can play on Poptropica, which are referred to as islands, and you can travel to different islands and learn different strategy skills! Have fun!
