recommend a young engineer or an HR person from your
company.
• The topic of the Industry Challenge (within the scope of
the “Silver” or “Gold” sponsoring package) should come
from the fields of robotics, automation or IoT—be it
software or hardware tasks. Please contact the
organizers to agree on the topic. It is recommended that a
technical contact person from your company
accompanies the Makeathon.
• Assume partnership for a certain topic and be available
to the teams with a challenge from this subject area.

Why an
automatica
Makeathon?
Messe München | Connecting Global Competence 10
A 30-hour development competition
▪ The neologism derived from “make” and “marathon”
designates a collaborative software and hardware
development competition within a predetermined
timeframe.
▪ A makeathon can be considered as an advancement
of a hackathon (from “hack” and “marathon”),
adapted to the “maker community” involving the use
of hardware.
▪ At automatica, software and hardware prototypes for
the areas of robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and
automation are developed by interdisciplinary teams
within 30 hours.
▪ The automatica Makeathon is aimed at young
talents (vocational students, apprentices and
students) from the fields of software engineering,
mechatronics and mechanics.

Promotion of young talents—Digital Innovation—Recruitment of
skilled employees
Makeathon as a future-proof training format
▪ Enthusiasm for technology: The Makeathon offers a true paradise for creative people
▪ Team spirit: The participants help each other, learn new things and pass on existing
knowledge to others.
▪ From idea to implementation: The project process follows the latest development
methods and mirrors the implementation of an industrial project in fast motion.
Creative potential in the field of software engineering
▪ The Industry Challenge combines real challenges of the industry with the freedom for
young talents to take action and become innovative.
▪ Answers to requirements or requests for new products or services.
▪ Participating companies themselves can learn a lot about new technologies and
working methods.
Interface between young talents and companies
▪ An excellent opportunity for companies to have their latest products tried out as a
basis for the development of new prototypes and
▪ to present themselves to the young talents as a potential employer.

Belgium, Spain, China, Czech Republic, France, Italy and
Poland
▪ 14 interdisciplinary teams
▪ in cooperation with the universities, including Aalen,
Kempten, South Westphalia, TU Munich, TU Prague or
TU Breslau
▪ 94% of the participants recommend the Makeathon to
others
▪ More than 3,600 automatica visitors were interested in the
Makeathon, 92% of them were impressed

automatica Makeathon 2020
With the third edition of the event, the automatica
Makeathon is to be systematically expanded:
• The automatica Makeathon 2020 will take place
on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 and Wednesday, June
17, 2020—on the first two days of the trade fair—
probably in Hall B4 near the atrium. This is
intended to give even more attention to this
innovative format.
• Around 250 participants have been planned for,
about twice as many as at previous events.
• For 2020, we hope to see an even closer linkage
with you as an automatica exhibitor and with the
industry.

In partnership with ITQ
ITQ GmbH is an independent engineering and
consulting company in the field of automation,
mechanical engineering and plant construction. For
about two decades, ITQ has been working on trend-
setting training and development concepts:
▪ Dr. Rainer Stetter, Managing Director of ITQ, is
the driving force and contributes his personal
university and industry network.
▪ Partner of the automatica Makeathon since 2016
▪ Organizer of the annual “Smart Green Island
Makeathon” in Gran Canaria, the largest
European makeathon with 270 young talents from
21 countries from about 70 international
universities in 2019.

Supported by VDMA Robotics + Automation
From the industry for the industry: The topics of
“recruiting young talents” and “recruiting skilled
workers” are of particular concern to the VDMA R+A,
the conceptual sponsor of automatica.
“Robotics and automation need gifted young
talents—together we can get young people excited
about our companies and our industry. The
Makeathon at automatica 2020 offers a unique
opportunity to communicate the attractiveness and
creativity of technical professions—not theoretically,
but in the most convincing way—by their own doing.”
(Patrick Schwarzkopf, VDMA R+A)
