...Your.Daily.Fix.................WHEAT AND BARLEY COMMIS-SIONS ESTABLISHED IN SAS-KATCHEWANgov.ca - Producers to Direct Check-off Dollars Toward Investing in Research, Promotion and Marketing Today, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced the establishment of both the Saskatche-wan Wheat Development Commis-sion and the Saskatchewan Barley De-velopment Commission. As a result, Saskatchewan producers will be able to direct check-off dollars into research, market development and promotion
initiatives for their sectors. “Now that Saskatchewan farmers enjoy marketing freedom, they have more control over their individual operations,” Stewart said. “Further-more, with the establishment of these commissions, the elected boards will see wheat and barley producers have greater control over the future of their industry.” The commissions have been es-tablished after an extensive consulta-tion process with producers. groups, led the consultation process. It is anticipated the commissions will be fully operational and collecting check-offs by August 1. The check-offs will be set at $0.52 per tonne for wheat and $0.50 per tonne for barley. This will generate revenue of approx-imately $4.3 million for wheat and $1 million for barley. Both commissions will be served by interim boards and elections for permanent boards will occur by December 2013. Check-off dollars administered by the commissions will go toward re-search initiatives that improve wheat and barley varieties, grow their mar-ketability and generally provide high-er value to wheat and barley produc-ers in the long term. “Saskatchewan is a leader in agri-culture innovation,” Wheat Develop-ment Commission interim Chairper-son Cherilyn Nagel said. “This new commission will allow Saskatchewan wheat farmers to have a say in the fu-ture of their crop.” “It’s really about the openness of our farmers to new tools and practices,” Barley Development Commission in-terim Chairperson Bill Cooper said. “Saskatchewan barley farmers want to be on the cutting edge and now they can have a say in how we will grow our sector.” These commissions will assist in achieving the goals set out in the Sas-katchewan Plan for Growth, includ-ing increasing crop production by 10 million tonnes, increasing agriculture exports by $5 billion, establishing Sas-katchewan as a world leader in bio-sciences and increasing value-added opportunities.

THIS IS A TRuE STORY. On a crowded Saturday morning I was walking toward a large grocery store. I saw two men fighting over the last grocery cart. Each one was holding on to it, jerking it away from the other. You’ve heard of road rage and now cart rage! What is the world coming to? I got closer to the store; I still could not hear what the men were saying to each oth-er. Must have been mean. I wondered what I should do. Talk to the store manager? What should I say to these men? Cart rage! Impa-tience! I got closer yet to the store. This fight looks serious. Can’t they wait for a customer to leave? The cart rage goes on! Neither one yielding to the other. I’m finally close enough to hear the two men. Oh! No! One last jerk and the two men broke the cart in half. Now what? Then I hear one man say to the other: “Thanks for helping me separate these two carts.”

9th of 10 Common Sayings With Historical originsBy Evan Andrews
Although you might not know it, you probably quote history on a daily basis. The English language is filled with idioms, sayings and bits of slang that are derived from historical events and legends. While the connections are sometimes obvious, other phrases have become so commonplace that most speakers probably never stop to consider their source. Find out more about the unusual origin stories behind 10 everyday phrases.
9. BY AND LARgEMany everyday phrases are nautical in origin— “taken aback,” “loose cannon” and “high and dry” all originated at sea—but perhaps the most surprising example is the common saying “by and large.” As far back as the 16th century, the word “large” was used to mean that a ship was sailing with the wind at its back. Meanwhile, the much less desirable “by,” or “full and by,” meant the vessel was traveling into the wind. Thus, for mariners, “by and large” referred to trawling the seas in any and all directions relative to the wind. Today, sailors and landlubbers alike now use the phrase as a synonym for “all things considered” or “for the most part.”

The old man had died. A wonderful funeral was in progress and the town’s preacher talked at length of the good traits of the deceased, what an honest man he was, and what a loving hus-
band and kind father he was. Finally, the widow leaned over and whispered
to one of her children, “Go up there and take a look in the coffin and see if
that’s your pa.”
An application was for employment; a program was
a TV show; a cursor used profanity; a keyboard was a
piano.Memory was something you
lost with age; a CD was a bank account; a hard drive
was a long road trip. A web was a spider’s home,
and a virus was the flu!
